Sure, they don't play all of the football games that I would like to watch, but then again there are other pubs I go to to watch the football. Being a suburban pub means that it is also going to have pokies, but that is not really a big deal for me (even though I really don't like poker machines - there are much more sophisticated ways of losing money than putting it into a machine with flashing lights and annoying sounds).

Of course being the middle of the night we just wanted to sleep and didn't think to call reception because honestly who's brain works at 1am and who wants to move rooms at 1am anyway?! So when we complained on checkout we were told we should have called reception. But that doesn't change the fact the roof of a hotel room that we are paying to stay in shouldn't leak in the first place!!!!.... and then the breakfast buffet.... I don't have many words for that apart from YUCK!!!! How do you even stuff up cooking bacon? I didn't know it was possible. But somehow they managed to. And the tomato with rank smelling cheese on it? Just why???! Scrambled eggs that were so dry I couldn't get them on my fork and the coffee... don't get me started on the lukewarm coffee. Blerghh!!! Never staying here again that's for sure.

The only things that I like about this pub (and the only reason I ever come here) is that it is really close to the railway station, and they generally show all of the football matches in the sports bar (I am too much of a cheapskate to get Foxtel - not that I have any time to watch it anyway). Okay, the food is cheap, but then again you do get what you pay for, and when I did have one of their specials they wanted to charge me extra for the salad, though I ended up getting it for free when I pointed out that the picture had a salad on it. Even then, we it comes to the football, once again there are much, much better places to go and watch it than the Cramers.

I admit Heidelberg/Ivanhoe was my 'just turned 18' stomping ground, I remember the very very old days where this place had yucky sticky carpet, dark wood furniture and a dodgy atmosphere. Since then they have renovated and updated a number of times and it all looks great. I have had a fair number of fun nights at this venue over the years and last night was just as fun. A few of us ordered meals, and the opinion around the table that they were OK, nothing to get too excited about. Myself and another had the "Catch Of The Day" from the special menu. Described as: Oven baked salmon, served with fondant potato, rosemary roasted carrot, baby corn and parsnip purée ($23.90). (Pic uploaded). I enjoyed my dish. It was at the start a tiny bit bland but the nice juicy slice of lemon added the right hit of flavour to the fish to make it rather delicious. I ended up eating and enjoying everything on the plate (except the baby corn, baby corn is weird man!). Even the carrots were delicious and I can usually take or leave those. And fondant potatoes, never heard of them until now but YUM. Can't say much about the other means. My friends pizza looked pretty substantial however she said it felt a bit too fatty too eat much of. They also have a deal advertised via Facebook, that if you check into the venue via mobile you can get half price drinks for the first half of the footy. Bargain! They had TVs all around showing the great Grand Final replay where Hawthorn played brilliant footy. A nice touch to end the night :) Drink service was also friendly and came with a smile. Perhaps I am biased due to my previous fun memories of this venue so 4 starts for this place. I enjoyed my time at The Barkly and hope to be back.

We had organised late check in and they were pleasant and kind to deal with when I wS organising that over the phone. They also rang when we landed to check when we would be arriving. The place is so close to Melbourne which is a huge bonus for the price. There was a car park out the back so no street parking. The night manager was kind and helpful. When we got to our room we were impressed. The bathroom was large and lovely - free tea and coffee as usual, nice tv and comfy bed - what more can you ask for? The one complaint I can see people making but didn't bother us is the walls are quite thin so you can hear people around you. (At one point the bathroom coughed haha)

It might only be a few blocks down the road and be across from the much hyped 'Welcome to Thornbury' food trucks, but it is still worlds away from having the vibe and the music street cred of the Northcote Social Club. It definitely still feels like it's in the same circuit as Doncaster Shoppingtown Hotel - made for nostalgia tours, tribute bands and the odd Chippendales type show. Having said all of that, I just saw one of the best gigs I've attended in the past few years. The band-room is probably 3-4 times bigger than NSC but the crowd in attendance this night was smaller than I feel would have turned up if it had been held up the road, a poor turn out for Jeff Martin of The Tea Party but not something that stopped him from putting on a hell of a show. He gets a 5 out of 5, even if the venue only gets a 3.
