We've bought…read morechocolates for ourselves, holidays, and gifts, and visiting Krause's has always been a tradition whenever I returned to New York after living in Florida. In fact, it was the very first stop my husband and I made because I couldn't wait to enjoy my favorite chocolates again. Unfortunately, this visit was incredibly disappointing. The first thing I noticed was the new logo and packaging. While I know businesses evolve, the new design loses the classic, elegant feel that made Krause's so special and instead looks much more generic. More importantly, the chocolates themselves are not the same. Many of the pieces are noticeably smaller than they used to be, and the chocolate tastes different. Several pieces even had bloom, which affected both their appearance and texture. I purchased a variety of chocolates, including individual pieces from the display case, chocolate bars, and peppermint patties, and every product seemed to reflect a decline in quality. To make matters worse, many of my longtime favorite pieces were no longer available. I've happily recommended Krause's for years because it consistently offered some of the best homemade chocolates in the Capital Region. This time, however, I left feeling disappointed and honestly saddened. I truly hope the owners will consider returning to the quality, recipes, and traditions that built Krause's outstanding reputation, because many longtime customers remember how exceptional their chocolates used to be.

There were toys (mostly nostalgic toys and also unique games that you wouldn't find at a brand named chain store), items that were locally hand crafted, candies, tea, candles, books, kitchen knick knacks ....and the list goes on. The prices were average/the same you would see in a similar store, but this country store probably has the most varied items I've seen in one place. What I immediately liked was the fact that she had sample plates in several areas of the small store offering tasted of some of the surrounding treats. After trying a bit of this and a bit of that, I settled on the "Wandering Star" truffle, which included double chocolate and stout. What a truffle! 100x better than Godiva, and for sure as good or better than similar offerings at the other candy stores around town. The store itself is elegant with some seating around the small perimeter. My only complaint is that they didn't have to go coffee cups. I was really in the mood for a cappuccino. This seems to be an easy fix that I'm hoping they will remedy. While I'm not sure this store will attract the movie crowd next door, I sure hope they "make it" so I can continue to satisfy my truffle fix from time to time.

They've got Harry Potter themed candy along with some other brand of disgusting flavored jelly beans (you know...like vomit and booger). I also spied some fun lunch boxes and cool mugs. Oh...and remember those ice box individually wrapped chocolates?? I had to buy one and eat it right away. Holy crap...those are sweeeeet. Guess I'm getting old....almost too sweet for me. I pass by it everyday going through the rotary, but for years could never figure out how to get there. One day, after years on wondering, I asked my wife how to get there, and she told me the entrance is behind that gas station on Pleasant Street. Well today, I did it, I successfully found my way inside In search of sugar free chocolates for my crazed diabetic mother-in-law. It's a decent size shop, with some nice displays, and a variety of different candies, but it seems everyone is there for the chocolates. Service was very nice, and willing to accommodate my special request of a custom sugar free gift set. They took the extra time and effort to decorate the two gift sets I bought in Valentines Day red ribbon. It's strictly candy, and much more of a variety of chocolates than Pete's Sweets down the street. P.S. To the old man(must of been Maureen's father)who was blatantly watching me as soon as I walked in. Chill out dude, I didn't rob them or steal anything, but did give them a $50 sale, and a four star Yelp review. Stopped in a second time and the place was in disarray. The carpet was dirty, and needed to be vacuumed. The chocolate cases were all messed up and low on supply. Maureen wasn't in the greatest mood. My wife was less than impressed with the state of the place, selection, and especially the prices.
