I have been to Hilo many times now and every time I get a chance to walk around the downtown area, I drop by the sugar coast candy store. Nestled within a strip of other stores selling various types of souvenirs, this candy store is just as you would expect it. It has a variety of different treats from chocolates to gummies to hard candies from around the world. In the center, of course, they have various flavors of salt water taffy. At the counter, they have various types of truffles (chocolates) as well as fudge if that is what you're into. Towards the front of the store, you can pick up the big scooper and get lbs upon lbs of soda candy. One time I even decided to get some dip n dots although I'm not sure if they have these available all the time. If you're out and about, just finished lunch and now looking for something to satisfy your sweet tooth, then I suggest dropping in and picking up something delicious! read more

If you ever go to HILO, Sugar Coast Candy is a MUST!! I was happy to stumble upon such a nostalgic candy store! The variety is amazing, there are old fashioned soda pop, and awesome assortment of gummy candies and chocolates. My mom and I loved the decor! So fun and hip! Although, be aware prices are somewhat steep. I guess its the price you pay to live in Hawaii (lol). The Cashier was very a bubbly young girl named Kisha! She was friendly and helpful and offered us options for different hikes, and beaches. Her recommendations were spot on. Make your way down the sleepy streets of Hilo town and stumble upon a corner store called: Sugar Coast Candy. Be careful when you open the door because it is not just a door, it's a portal. You will be transported into a candy heaven of another time and place. It's a kid's dreamworld and also for big kids with a serious sweet tooth. Everything is in either barrels, glass jars or hanging from the ceiling. It has the largest selection of salt water taffy in huge barrels that I've ever seen. Overpriced candy that was in a bag, ripped open and placed into a jar. You can get most candy from other stores for much cheaper. Was not greeted upon entering the store seeing that me and my friend was the only ones inside. Interesting name for chocolate and other things made but it was packed with so much sugar that I almost could feel cavities forming on my teeth. Good things came from their taffy so I got a couple. It tasted really artificial. The lady behind the counter wasn't really nice either. Very grumpy. Seeing that things were really pricy we got very little candy. She looked at our candy bags and asked "is that all?" (No it was not in a playful or joking kind of way. More like - why are you even shopping here? Vibe.) I love candy stores. I love candy. Not that big on chocolate (I must be alien) but chewy, fruity candy I cannot resist. My friend and I are in Hilo for a conference and we decided to stop in for some candy to nom on during conference sessions. We chose to get a bag of salt water taffy. We got many flavors: everything from bubble gum to cotton candy to watermelon, cherry, orange cream, black licorice (just me) to mint (just her). We got about 25 pieces for roughly $7. we came to see what Hawaiian candy they had that we didn't have in the states and when we walked in it was just like any other candy store on the main land. we ended up not buying anything and going to a shaved ice place near by. All the candy one could ever want! Stopped here because my cousin specifically requested the li hing mui sour belts from this store. Walked out with that and more! Our new find was suggested by the guy who works there and it's amazing! He suggested buying mango sour belts and he coated the belts in li hing mui powder for us. Love that combination. Most candy is by the pound and they have everything from nostalgic candies to chocolate to things I've never seen. Definitely a candy heaven read more

Still like the shop buy was disappointed to see they had torn Ross tags off the back of some candy tins and repriced them with their price. I actually bought the candy at Ross for $1.99 and saw them there and turned the tin over to see the tags ripped off from Ross, sticky stuff still attached and some with partial stickers left and repriced for $5.00. Talk about an abundance of candy choices upon walking in! I really think they must carry everything you could want-- even chocolate ice cubes! I really used to love those cool suckers as a child! The store is really organized and the colors on the walls create a fun feel- as though I've been tossed into a little Wonka store. HOWEVER, the service SUCKS! Could you be any more bitchy? This is a sweet little candy store...I have definitely seen a couple of the "different" candies before, but being where I am from and that I am in Hilo I can see where the selection would be a bit more than the norm. Yet, the one thing that is the absolute do NOT miss is the Chocolate covered Mac Nuts. They are to die for. We stopped in here after lunch and I grabbed just 5 of these little delights, eating 3 with the help of my husband on the way to the farmers market. I will be back for these chocolate "turtles" (they are covered with caramel then chocolate) many more times before I leave this lava rock island that I love. read more

Great place, smells so yummy when you open the door. Prices are very high I think. I got one piece of chocolate 3.50$. And the taste, was not that great. Large assortment of old school candy, and I guess for the island people get excited for that. Cool,sodas in the case and funny names too. The woman at the register was very kind, and helpful. Wonderful candy shop right in the middle of funky downtown Hilo. The store has a large selection of old-time candies I've haven't seen for years, such as Kits and Cherry Mash chocolates, made by the Chase Candy Co. of St. Joseph, MO. (I thought this candy was long gone!) They have a large selection of authenically flavored taffy in flavors you'd never figure would exist, such as pineapple, passion fruit, red licorice, and even chocolate chip cookie. Neat thing about their taffy is that it actually tastes strongly like the flavor it says it is. I didn't have time to explore the store as much as I wanted to, due to time constraints, but I could tell that this is a serious candy store worthy of further investigation of their goodies my next visit to Hilo. My husband and I popped into this candy store as we strolled around the Hilo downtown area. I loved the nostalgia section with the gummy candies; my favorites are the grapefruits. Closer to the checkout area were the chocolate goodies (yay for dark chocolate!) and interesting sodas. We happened to stop by on Halloween weekend and enjoyed the free scoop of Halloween-colored M&M's. We did end up getting some candies, which we munched on while waiting for our flight at the airport.
