Sugar Coast Candies almost seems out of place with its fellow stores on the Hilo waterfront but it certainly offers a good selection of candies and other treats to satisfy your sweet tooth. The store features an old-fashioned charm and an extensive selection of taffys and other bulk candies. Their chocolate confections are certainly tasty and sure to please! Prices are a little on the pricier side when compared to other candy shops, but it seems to be the only game in town so you certainly pay top dollar to satisfy your cravings. The service is good and with plenty of staff to assist you in your purchase. read more

What?!?! These are crazy unique candy I can't find in Texas. Picked up some chocolate covered honeycomb and then exotic Hawaiian flavored gummies. Long air flight - I'm ready for ya!!!! Price was reasonable. Expect to walk out around 10 bucks. read more

I have been to Hilo many times now and every time I get a chance to walk around the downtown area, I drop by the sugar coast candy store. Nestled within a strip of other stores selling various types of souvenirs, this candy store is just as you would expect it. It has a variety of different treats from chocolates to gummies to hard candies from around the world. In the center, of course, they have various flavors of salt water taffy. At the counter, they have various types of truffles (chocolates) as well as fudge if that is what you're into. Towards the front of the store, you can pick up the big scooper and get lbs upon lbs of soda candy. One time I even decided to get some dip n dots although I'm not sure if they have these available all the time. If you're out and about, just finished lunch and now looking for something to satisfy your sweet tooth, then I suggest dropping in and picking up something delicious! read more

Make your way down the sleepy streets of Hilo town and stumble upon a corner store called: Sugar Coast Candy. Be careful when you open the door because it is not just a door, it's a portal. You will be transported into a candy heaven of another time and place. It's a kid's dreamworld and also for big kids with a serious sweet tooth. Everything is in either barrels, glass jars or hanging from the ceiling. It has the largest selection of salt water taffy in huge barrels that I've ever seen. All the candy from your childhood awaits you here-you know, the stuff you can't find anymore and have to turn to the internet for. This place is a serious gem. read more

If you ever go to HILO, Sugar Coast Candy is a MUST!! I was happy to stumble upon such a nostalgic candy store! The variety is amazing, there are old fashioned soda pop, and awesome assortment of gummy candies and chocolates. My mom and I loved the decor! So fun and hip! Although, be aware prices are somewhat steep. I guess its the price you pay to live in Hawaii (lol). The Cashier was very a bubbly young girl named Kisha! She was friendly and helpful and offered us options for different hikes, and beaches. Her recommendations were spot on. We were happy to be able to experience the authentic Hilo, instead of doing the usual tours like a toursit. Definitely felt the Aloha spirit! Can't wait until the next trip! read more

Overpriced candy that was in a bag, ripped open and placed into a jar. You can get most candy from other stores for much cheaper. Was not greeted upon entering the store seeing that me and my friend was the only ones inside. Interesting name for chocolate and other things made but it was packed with so much sugar that I almost could feel cavities forming on my teeth. Good things came from their taffy so I got a couple. It tasted really artificial. The lady behind the counter wasn't really nice either. Very grumpy. Seeing that things were really pricy we got very little candy. She looked at our candy bags and asked "is that all?" (No it was not in a playful or joking kind of way. More like - why are you even shopping here? Vibe.) Did not even say thank you after our purchase was made. Overall - Expensive, rude and unwelcoming. Will not return. read more

Love this place! Every time we come here, we find a new favorite candy. From the chocolate clusters, to the sour ribbons. The variety of different candies never gets old. read more

I love candy stores. I love candy. Not that big on chocolate (I must be alien) but chewy, fruity candy I cannot resist. My friend and I are in Hilo for a conference and we decided to stop in for some candy to nom on during conference sessions. We chose to get a bag of salt water taffy. We got many flavors: everything from bubble gum to cotton candy to watermelon, cherry, orange cream, black licorice (just me) to mint (just her). We got about 25 pieces for roughly $7. These yummies have been hitting the spot. I especially love the watermelon and the bubble gum. read more

we came to see what Hawaiian candy they had that we didn't have in the states and when we walked in it was just like any other candy store on the main land. we ended up not buying anything and going to a shaved ice place near by. The shop was small but the decoration and candy jars did look nice. read more

When walking through downtown Hilo, step into this shop. This is a sweet surprise for those who are looking for a sugar itch to scratch. Something for everyone, homemade fudge, craft sodas, chocolate covered everything. My favorite was candied ginger and chocolate covered mango. All arranged in a very "eye candy" way. read more

An amazing selection of Candies! My husband is much older than me and saw candy that made him feel like a kid. I felt the same way with the selection. If your a chocolate fanatic, then this is a must. They have every flavor imaginable with chocolate. The lady working is super friendly and helped us find a place to swim. She was informative and gave us service with a smile. read more

Nice variety of candy. A lot of it is per 1/4lb so it adds up pretty quickly. Nice little shop for sweet treats though.

If your going to Hilo, make sure to stop by and get some (plenty) of their watermelon taffy!!!!!!!!! It's the best I have ever eaten. read more

Walked in and a blast of cold air with the smell of sugary sweetness hit me! Thus place is fantastic and fresh! The employees are super sweet as well as the candy. I got the sugar free coconut vanilla fudge and it was amazing! The rest if my family filled up little bags of different candies from the store. Thank you for the amazing sweets!!! :) Just a heads up it is a little tight spaced and small so I wouldnt suggest taking a big group into this shop. read more

All the candy one could ever want! Stopped here because my cousin specifically requested the li hing mui sour belts from this store. Walked out with that and more! Our new find was suggested by the guy who works there and it's amazing! He suggested buying mango sour belts and he coated the belts in li hing mui powder for us. Love that combination. Most candy is by the pound and they have everything from nostalgic candies to chocolate to things I've never seen. Definitely a candy heaven read more

The most magical candy store in all the land... everything was displayed picture-perfect. The employees were friendly as can be. The options left nothing to be desired. I don't even eat candy, but I had to take multiple photos, and indulge in a coconut haystack... I did it all for you, Yelp. read more

This place doesn't just deserve 5 stars. It needs 50. I have never been to a place that is so unbelievably nice to walk into, be greeted with great conversation, and CANDY! Jake is the absolute best, with his killer attitude and how happy he always is to see my husband and I. Every time, he's got new things for us to try and even knows what we like. If you're in Hilo and have a craving for something sweet... or even just want to be reminded of your childhood favorites-- go see Jake at Sugar Coast! read more

We were visiting BI from Oahu and found this store on Yelp. My son loves candy and this place was awesome. He literally said "this is my wish come true" as he walked around haha. Very reasonable prices and a great variety of candy. Wish we had a nice candy store like this! read more

Neat, awesome candy shop. Perfect for that little something sweet to eat after dinner!

Still like the shop buy was disappointed to see they had torn Ross tags off the back of some candy tins and repriced them with their price. I actually bought the candy at Ross for $1.99 and saw them there and turned the tin over to see the tags ripped off from Ross, sticky stuff still attached and some with partial stickers left and repriced for $5.00. I thought it was just a little cheesy to purchase from Hilo and mark them up so much when anyone could see they were remarked. read more

Ok... Let me preface this with THERE IS A CRAP TON OF CANDY, new and old school variety. Prices are STEEP, got two bags 3/4 full for $30+. My big beef is that they sell CANDY CIGARETTES. May not be a big deal for some, but the concept of selling candy to mimic a carcinogen to appeal to kids is outrageous. Granted, it's a "novelty" item and it's not as if there are rows and rows of cigarette candy, but gross... read more

Talk about an abundance of candy choices upon walking in! I really think they must carry everything you could want-- even chocolate ice cubes! I really used to love those cool suckers as a child! The store is really organized and the colors on the walls create a fun feel- as though I've been tossed into a little Wonka store. HOWEVER, the service SUCKS! Could you be any more bitchy? I'm excited over dippin' dots....so what! Smile, hunny because that look and awful attitude is not cool around happy children (and adults). read more

This is a sweet little candy store...I have definitely seen a couple of the "different" candies before, but being where I am from and that I am in Hilo I can see where the selection would be a bit more than the norm. Yet, the one thing that is the absolute do NOT miss is the Chocolate covered Mac Nuts. They are to die for. We stopped in here after lunch and I grabbed just 5 of these little delights, eating 3 with the help of my husband on the way to the farmers market. I will be back for these chocolate "turtles" (they are covered with caramel then chocolate) many more times before I leave this lava rock island that I love. read more

This is a must on our to-do list whenever we head over to Hilo. The variety of candies in this store is unbelievable! Great place, smells so yummy when you open the door. Prices are very high I think. I got one piece of chocolate 3.50$. And the taste, was not that great. Large assortment of old school candy, and I guess for the island people get excited for that. Cool, sodas in the case and funny names too. The woman at the register was very kind, and helpful. Got a bit frustrated when I changed my mind over what I wanted but changed her tune quickly. All in all a must stop in to bruise kind of place and treat yourself to a sweet treat. read more

There coconut and cashew brittle brought me to my knees. This confection is pure perfection.

Sugar Coast Candy is amazing! The smell of candy hits you right when you open the door! Beautifully set up. Wonderful staff.

Wonderful candy shop right in the middle of funky downtown Hilo. The store has a large selection of old-time candies I've haven't seen for years, such as Kits and Cherry Mash chocolates, made by the Chase Candy Co. of St. Joseph, MO. (I thought this candy was long gone!) They have a large selection of authenically flavored taffy in flavors you'd never figure would exist, such as pineapple, passion fruit, red licorice, and even chocolate chip cookie. Neat thing about their taffy is that it actually tastes strongly like the flavor it says it is. I didn't have time to explore the store as much as I wanted to, due to time constraints, but I could tell that this is a serious candy store worthy of further investigation of their goodies my next visit to Hilo. Young girl working the cashier the day I visited (11/30/11) was very sweet and with plenty of Aloha spirit. Can't wait to visit again! read more

Nice, clean store. Lots of fun flavors hidden in many jars that are not "front and center" on the display counters. But, the price can sure add up quickly for a few pieces of chocolate. It is worth a small splurge, though... read more

My husband and I popped into this candy store as we strolled around the Hilo downtown area. I loved the nostalgia section with the gummy candies; my favorites are the grapefruits. Closer to the checkout area were the chocolate goodies (yay for dark chocolate!) and interesting sodas. We happened to stop by on Halloween weekend and enjoyed the free scoop of Halloween-colored M&M's. We did end up getting some candies, which we munched on while waiting for our flight at the airport. Yum! Nice pit stop for tasty sweets! read more
