Gummies, chocolates, taffy, Big League Chew (hello nostalgia!), and so much more...there's something to satisfy every sweet tooth. I went in with one mission: to find the elusive (and discontinued?) Peach Penguin gummies. Does anyone know these? I've not had them but a friend who grew up in the Bay Area raves about them, so it's my mission to find them (other than on the internet). They never have my milk chocolate fudge balls in stock but they have such a large selection of candy and chocolate covered things they still get a 5 star review. The selection of chocolate is vast. They also have a large variety of gummies and sour candies. They have local options and options that are shipped in. There is even a large sugar free section. Something for everyone. I love how easy it is to pick exactly what you want and how much. It is nice that you pay by weight so the line goes fast. Stumbled across this candy store on our way back to the hotel and the candy was irresistible! The candies were presented so nicely and the whole shop is so cute. There were plenty of chocolates, taffy, sweets and sodas to choose from. The lady who checked us out was so sweet and helped us choose our soda. Anytime I go downtown I stop by this place! The way it works is different candy has different prices by weight. You get different bags and fill each up with the various choices in the category. Then they weigh it and you pay in the back! I'm really into the chocolate section. The ambience is amazing, feels like a fairy tale or something. They also have a lot of really interesting sodas! I love buying some random flavor sodas at checkout. The soda's are pretty hit or miss taste wise but that's the fun of it. I don't have a sweet tooth but even I recognize a hidden gem when I see one. Located on the main strip of Hilo, this place is a great place to stop by if you're craving something sweet. The shop has a plethora of candy - taffy, chocolates, candies from all over for people to choose from. We stopped by before we went back to Waikoloa and this place provided us with just the sugar rush we needed to make the drive back. I've been to Hilo twice and this place is a MUST SEE. Adorable interior and such a cool and wide variety of candy. Like Being In Willie Wonka Land! Go back in time to feel like a child again and visit! We visited a similar place in San Francisco and it was a nice surprise to find this place (we had lunch at a resto a few doors away) Place is packed to the brim with almost every candy you could think of, including some old-time ones that I haven't seen since a kid. If you're still a kid at heart, or have kids, it's a visit worth taking just for the experience. I'm not even a candy freak, but I compare it to going on a Ferris wheel or carousel, if you know what I mean. Even if you just go in and browse, it's worth it to feel like you took a step back in time. (though I encourage you to buy, to support local business). It IS expensive, but so totally fun! Fun yet Dangerous Shop! (Dangerous in the sense that you (I) want everything, and can easily get carried away picking one of these and 2 of those, etc.... all down the chocolate aisle.) They have a wonderful chocolate assortment. Take your time and browse and put together a plan before putting items in your bag. Before you know it, you'll have a bag full of chocolate and at $5 for a 1/4 pound, it adds up fast. I only got the chocolates... I enjoyed the chocolate pistachios, the chocolate peanut butter cups, the chocolate coconut thing (I don't remember the name), the chocolate butter toffee. I can't really say there was a "favorite" because I enjoyed ALL OF THEM! The store has a large assortment of taffy too... if you are a taffy person, you'll probably have a field day. :) The gal working was nice, and helpful while Mom and I were being indecisive. I loved going here whenever I was in Hilo. Maybe once a month but I bought out the store with my favorite flavors. Then I stopped going because the greatest store manager ever was no longer there. But a wonderful surprise happened and Jake is back! I figure they begged him to return because the women who took over were not at all friendly. Walking into Sugar Coast Candy is like stepping foot into candy heaven. From chocolates to gummies to taffy to candies of yester-year; Sugar Coast has got it all. And it's all arranged neatly into categories which makes it easier to decide what kind of sugar-high you want. I always opt for the gummies whenever I come here. But. what I've recently discovered in the chocolate aisle is the chocolate covered honeycombs. I was a huge fan of Violet Crumble back in the 90s and was so disappointed when stores stopped selling it. Although Sugar Coast doesn't have the Violet Crumble brand, they've got these homemade (?) chocolate honeycombs that come pretty damn close to tasting like Violet Crumble. Amazeballs. One thing I would like to see is pricing for the candies and a scale so you can kind gauge how much money you'll be dishing out (although that hasn't stopped me from going). Also, they serve Dippin' Dots here. The only place I know of (right now) in Hilo that sells it. read more
