Sugar Coast Candy - Candy Stores Near Me - Hilo, Hawaii

The sweetest candy shop, located on the main street in downtown Hilo! Gummies, chocolates, taffy, Big League Chew (hello nostalgia!), and so much more...there's something to satisfy every sweet tooth. I went in with one mission: to find the elusive (and discontinued?) Peach Penguin gummies. Does anyone know these? I've not had them but a friend who grew up in the Bay Area raves about them, so it's my mission to find them (other than on the internet). It's not surprising that we didn't find them, but we did find every other gummy candy under the sun, including gummy peaches and sharks. It was still so fun to look at all the sweet eye candy. If you're visiting Hilo and searching for a sweet treat, definitely check out Sugar Coast Candy! read more

Sugar Coast Candy - Candy Stores Near Me - Hilo, Hawaii

Crazy expensive for a piece of sugar with artificial colors and flavors. Tiny store with 2 crowded, narrow aisles.

A very wide variety of candy and sweets to choose from. Great if you just want a little bit or a lot

If candy's your thing, make a trip out to this place if you're ever in Hilo. They have all manners of candy: ribbons, tubes, drops, gummies, wrapped, unwrapped, taffy in every flavor, old-fashioned old-school candies (except the ones that look like cigarettes, haven't seen those forever because it's probably politically incorrect now). They even have the craziest sodas with flavors like Bug Barf and Dog Drool, and some normal sodas like Boysenberry Pie. I was actually craving real cracked seed but all they had was li hing gummies and I didn't want the added sugar so I ended up walking out of there with a lot of cool memories via photos and nary a drop of sugar in my bloodstream. read more

A "real" candy store located in downtown Hilo. The store has a huge selection of hard, soft, sticky, sweet, sour, chewy, candy and gum. You name it, they probably have it. The candy is sold by the pound. The little one bought 4 pieces of bubble gum and a Hershey kiss and it was $1. I thought that was expensive and the reason for 4 stars. In terms of selection, it's 5 stars. read more

They do have a good selection of candies however none are made by them all candles are made by others as for the prices they are by no exaggeration the absolute most expensive candy store I've ever been to, there excessive over pricing is in my own opinion gouging at its best again just my opinion if your visiting the Big Island i would recommend Big Island candy company if your going to pay ridiculous extravagant pricing you mine as well pay for candy made on site fresh not purchased and resold to you for a very ridiculous price. read more

Every time I go to the big island I make multiple visits to sugar coast candy. They never have my milk chocolate fudge balls in stock but they have such a large selection of candy and chocolate covered things they still get a 5 star review. The selection of chocolate is vast. They also have a large variety of gummies and sour candies. They have local options and options that are shipped in. There is even a large sugar free section. Something for everyone. I love how easy it is to pick exactly what you want and how much. It is nice that you pay by weight so the line goes fast. This candy store is always busy but is always kind to every customer. read more

Stumbled across this candy store on our way back to the hotel and the candy was irresistible! The candies were presented so nicely and the whole shop is so cute. There were plenty of chocolates, taffy, sweets and sodas to choose from. The lady who checked us out was so sweet and helped us choose our soda. I will also note that we appreciated the cleanliness at this shop since the tongs were sanitized after each use. read more

I don't have a sweet tooth but even I recognize a hidden gem when I see one. Located on the main strip of Hilo, this place is a great place to stop by if you're craving something sweet. The shop has a plethora of candy - taffy, chocolates, candies from all over for people to choose from. We stopped by before we went back to Waikoloa and this place provided us with just the sugar rush we needed to make the drive back. The variety of candy is really amazing for a small shop in the middle of the Big Island and prices are fair. Staff here is super friendly and amazing. Well worth a stop if you're in the area. read more

Anytime I go downtown I stop by this place! The way it works is different candy has different prices by weight. You get different bags and fill each up with the various choices in the category. Then they weigh it and you pay in the back! I'm really into the chocolate section. The ambience is amazing, feels like a fairy tale or something. They also have a lot of really interesting sodas! I love buying some random flavor sodas at checkout. The soda's are pretty hit or miss taste wise but that's the fun of it. The lady behind the counter is super nice, just how you feel a candy shop to be! read more

This is the ultimate candy shop to satisfy your sweet tooth!! Willy Wonka would be proud of this hidden gem tucked away in Downtown Hilo. This corner store serving adults and kids of all ages to candies from every generation. You may even be lucky to find candy that takes you back to your childhood. I know I did! There are chocolates, rock candy, gumdrops, gum balls, taffy, m&m, smarties GALORE. Any candy you can imagine is there! They even got some Harry Potter chocolate frogs. These pics don't do this place justice. You just gotta be there. and yes they do charge per pound. read more

I've been to Hilo twice and this place is a MUST SEE. Adorable interior and such a cool and wide variety of candy. They even have fancy chocolates in the case up front which look so good I gotta grab one my next visit. The service is nice it's like walking into a little mom and pop shop you can feel the happiness radiating in there. They have vintage candy to new candy and even a li hing section (my fave)!! Support local businesses and come grab some goodies for the plane ride home or just to snack on throughout your visit you won't regret it read more

Such a fun store! And there's something for everyone- chocolate, sour candies, hard candy, taffy, even a sugar free section. There are multiple sizes of bags and tongs/scoops to grab your selection. And the employees are very helpful and friendly. Prices aren't cheap but also aren't ridiculous. My only quibble is that I found our selections to be a bit less than fresh, but when you sell such a great selection it's hard to keep everything super fresh. read more

Um how did this place become MORE magical than my last visit? It's been a number of years since my last trip to Hilo and this time around I introduced my 9-year old daughter to all the glory that lies within Sugar Coast Candy! From the moment we entered the store she was on cloud nine from being overwhelmed by the magic of this candy stuffed store. Even my husband who rarely indulges in sweets smiled from ear to ear as he discovered some of his favorite childhood treats from taffy to gummies. Is this spot spendy? Definitely more than your average visit to Longs. Will you be transported back to your 6-year old child self? Absolutely! read more

After eating Mexican at Lucy's I wanted some sweet things and this store never disappoints! Nothing is better than seeing all of your old favorite candy and some new ones and only choosing the candy that you like!!!!! I mean, I get to choose and only take the "good ones"????? That's right - only the good stuff!!!!!! You grab and get charged by the pound and at that point, you don't care. It all looks good!!!! I don't know how they keep it looking good and fresh but it always looks great in this candy store!!!! If you're a sugarholic, you've finally come to the mothership! It is mind-blowing how much candy these folks have been able to put in one location! They have candy for pretty much everyone and every tastes. For those who like jelly beans, (check), taffy (check), chocolates (check, check, they have alot), gum (check), bugs (yup, check), etc. The list could go one but the best thing to do is to stop on by and see for yourself! The store is as clean as a whistle and the sales clerk is very helpful. I got a collection of lollypops with scorpions, crickets and meal worms to reward some "special" folks at Christmas. Bwahahahaha! This is one incredible store and definitely worth a visit. Check it out! read more

Like Being In Willie Wonka Land! Go back in time to feel like a child again and visit! We visited a similar place in San Francisco and it was a nice surprise to find this place (we had lunch at a resto a few doors away) Place is packed to the brim with almost every candy you could think of, including some old-time ones that I haven't seen since a kid. If you're still a kid at heart, or have kids, it's a visit worth taking just for the experience. I'm not even a candy freak, but I compare it to going on a Ferris wheel or carousel, if you know what I mean. Even if you just go in and browse, it's worth it to feel like you took a step back in time. (though I encourage you to buy, to support local business). It IS expensive, but so totally fun! I bought salt water toffee, coconut stacks and a few other little things. You'll walk around with a perma-smile! read more

Fun yet Dangerous Shop! (Dangerous in the sense that you (I) want everything, and can easily get carried away picking one of these and 2 of those, etc.... all down the chocolate aisle.) They have a wonderful chocolate assortment. Take your time and browse and put together a plan before putting items in your bag. Before you know it, you'll have a bag full of chocolate and at $5 for a 1/4 pound, it adds up fast. I only got the chocolates... I enjoyed the chocolate pistachios, the chocolate peanut butter cups, the chocolate coconut thing (I don't remember the name), the chocolate butter toffee. I can't really say there was a "favorite" because I enjoyed ALL OF THEM! The store has a large assortment of taffy too... if you are a taffy person, you'll probably have a field day. :) The gal working was nice, and helpful while Mom and I were being indecisive. Good thing this store is no where near where I live. read more

Sugar Coast Candy is a wild & crazy store that has hundreds of candies sold by the piece or by the pound. Walking into Sugar Coast Candy is like stepping foot into candy heaven. From chocolates to gummies to taffy to candies of yester-year; Sugar Coast has got it all. And it's all arranged neatly into categories which makes it easier to decide what kind of sugar-high you want. I always opt for the gummies whenever I come here. But. what I've recently discovered in the chocolate aisle is the chocolate covered honeycombs. I was a huge fan of Violet Crumble back in the 90s and was so disappointed when stores stopped selling it. Although Sugar Coast doesn't have the Violet Crumble brand, they've got these homemade (?) chocolate honeycombs that come pretty damn close to tasting like Violet Crumble. Amazeballs. One thing I would like to see is pricing for the candies and a scale so you can kind gauge how much money you'll be dishing out (although that hasn't stopped me from going). Also, they serve Dippin' Dots here. The only place I know of (right now) in Hilo that sells it. read more

More old-timey candies than the macadamia and coconut confections you see everywhere else here. Think taffy, Skybar, Mallow Cups, Zagnut. etc. This is probably the only place in HI where you can get Vernors ginger ale (originally from MI), in glass bottles no less. I was shocked when my bf pointed that out in the refrigerator case. The girl behind the counter was peppy and helpful. A sugary snack along the Bayfront. read more

I loved going here whenever I was in Hilo. Maybe once a month but I bought out the store with my favorite flavors. Then I stopped going because the greatest store manager ever was no longer there. But a wonderful surprise happened and Jake is back! I figure they begged him to return because the women who took over were not at all friendly. It was no longer enjoyable to walk in and not have that handsome face smile in recognition and greet me. Every time we were in Hilo I would just drive by. Missed the experience of this great store and the wonderful Jake. Am thankful my husband saw him in the store window and told me he was back. Hoping he stays put for awhile. read more
