    Trails heading south

Excellent staff and attention to detail in helping me and my cousin and her hubby in renting ebikes to tour the area. They loved it and it was fun, they are hooked and pedal assist is the way to go. When I do return, I'll frequent this place, excellent selection, service and the trail network is great, could head south to Iowa City or north past Cedar Rapids. Impressive for the area.

That's lying.then said we don't sell those Chinese parts , that's racist and incorrect. all this terrible interaction was to hide the brand loyalty they're bound to. i am afraid of sabotage as a tool to drive me away. instead of just outright refusing service because my bike is the wrong brand. I went and got some facts for you. Why That Statement Doesn't Hold Up If that shop truly refuses to stock any components made in China, they're likely contradicting themselves without realizing it. Here's why: · Tier 1 Components: Even flagship groupsets from Shimano (Japan) and SRAM (USA)--the two dominant players--have significant manufacturing, casting, and assembly operations in China, Taiwan, and other parts of Asia. A "Shimano" bike isn't a "Japanese" bike; it's a globally sourced product. · Frames & Finishing: The vast majority of aluminum and carbon fiber frames sold worldwide--regardless of the brand name on the down tube (Trek, Specialized, Cannondale, etc.)--are manufactured in Taiwan or China by OEM giants like Giant or Merida. · Wheels & Finishing Kits: Items like stems, handlebars, seat posts, and even high-end carbon wheelsets often come from specialized Asian manufacturers, even if they're branded with a Western company's logo. However, the blanket statement "we don't carry Chinese parts" is a massive oversimplification. If they are selling any modern bike with Shimano, SRAM, or a branded aluminum/carbon frame, they are selling Asian-made parts. A Quick Reality Check for the Shop Component Likely Origin Shimano Drivetrain Japan (design), China or Malaysia (manufacturing) SRAM Drivetrain USA (design), Taiwan or China (manufacturing) Aluminum Frame Taiwan, China, or Vietnam Carbon Frame Taiwan or China High-End Wheels USA/Europe (assembly), but rims/hubs often from Taiwan Overwhelming Share: An estimated 87% to 94% of bicycles and their components in the United States rely on supply from China alone . · Industry Reality: This high level of dependence means that almost all bikes sold in the U.S. are either manufactured in China or assembled there from Chinese-made parts . · The Cost Factor: For some U.S. manufacturers, components sourced from China represent as much as 90% of their total parts cost .

We had just moved to the area, and someone recommended Goldfinch when I mentioned I was looking for a new bike. I'm so glad I listened. I test-rode a couple of bikes at first and honestly wasn't in love with the initial options. Ian, who helped me, never rushed me or tried to push a sale. His focus was clearly on making sure I ended up with the right bike for Eastern Iowa riding--not just any bike. He eventually recommended a Kona they had on display that was already outfitted with excellent tires and some really nice upgrades. I took it out for a ride and immediately loved it. Even though I own other bikes, this is the one I keep reaching for--I've been riding it consistently ever since. What really stood out was that I never felt "sold to." Goldfinch is all about matching you with the right gear, whether that's the right bike, accessories, or equipment. They did a great job getting everything dialed in and even threw in a couple of extras, which was a thoughtful touch. We've been back several times since to look at bags and other gear, and every visit reinforces why I like this shop. They remember my name, they're genuinely friendly and personable, and it's clear they truly care about the cycling community in the Cedar Rapids and Iowa City area. If you're looking to buy a bike or want a shop that puts cyclists first, I highly recommend Goldfinch Cyclery.

I got to test drive a bike on a trail and even rented a bike for several days to try out. I know without a doubt I chose a good bike for me. And then she surprisingly pulls out a color I love at the conclusion of our deliberation. I'll eventually buy another bike so when I have a friend over there's no excuse not to take a ride! My dear avid biker son, who is no longer here, liked working with Gold Finch and now I know why. The kindness of the people who work there is worthy of mention also. Happy to support this small local business!

This is where Play It Again Sports enters the picture. Until my kids stay in a shoe size longer than a few months, don't outgrow a bike in a summer or decide a sport is something they want to play a few seasons in a row-- I'd rather buy used and on the cheap. Our last trip in was for two bikes-- one for a four year old girl and another for a two year old boy. We left with two bikes: one girly pink and the other a boyish Iowa Hawkeyes. I was helped immediately. They showed me all the options, talked size and even installed new training wheels for me before taking them to the car for me. With ample parking, a friendly staff and an ever changing inventory of used sporting and exercise equipment this place serves its purpose. Since they rely on buying used equipment to then resell, their selection fluctuates so I recommend contacting them before going in. Cleats, soccer balls, baseball gloves, bicycles, rollerblades, frisbees -- you name it, they've got it for your little AND FOR YOU!
