The landscaping is so nice and the private parking lot is labeled so well. They have marked spaces for volunteers and adopters, it makes you feel good to pull up and look inside. The staff is super friendly and helpful. The kennels are clean an roomy compared to other shelters I have visited. I wish the color of paint on the wall was brighter. Gray is a downer on cement walls and the walk to the kennels is gloomy. Going back soon to visit my potential buddy.

We turned to this humane society because of an ad posted on a website finder of a specific dog. The…read moredog we had adopted from them was older and we had been under the impression that he was in pristine health. (After them giving us a run down of medical history, which wasn't a lot- but them giving us verbal confirmation multiple times that he was healthy, neutered, etc. We also asked more than once to confirm so. ) We had been under the impression nothing was wrong with him. We signed the papers and brought him home. He fit in wonderfully with our family. A little over a week into owning him I took him to the vet and within few minutes of the vet doing a SIMPLE look over, (the same look over any dog is supposed to get when brought to the vet for the first time) she managed to tell me 4 things wrong that were life threatening, 6 in general. I would need to spend 6k, which was JUST the starting price in order to assist these issues. All diseases/physical disorders/potential cancerous tumors were developed well before we brought him into our home. On top of all that, because of all the issues he had, even with the surgeries he would not have a much longer life span. I ended up spending $450 to get him the shots he needed & blood work done and had various other appointments scheduled. Unfortunately, I had to bring the dog back. I completely understand that non-profit organizations, shelters, etc, do the best they can to provide for each animal in their care. Having volunteered at shelters previously and just knowing people in the industry-- within the first few days of receiving the animal they are brought to a vet to be examined. Their goal is to test for heart worms, give the rabies shot, and spay/neuter the animal. However, before ANY of these procedures are done to the animal they examine them. There is no reason that we shouldn't have been informed about these conditions. It was highly,- no. EXTREMELY unprofessional for them to adopt out a dog without telling us the truth about his condition. After grilling them, I was refunded the basic adoption fee. Though, it didn't make anything much better. Im out $500+ and my family & I grew attached to the dog. Also, the receptionist had been very standoffish to us, which from reading other reviews, isn't much of a shocker. All my family & I wanted was to give an animal their forever home and this place turns out to not be the place to go. I would not recommend this place to ANYONE! My family nor I will never be associated with them in the future. I would give them negative stars if I could.

I have adopted from them more than once and it's been great…read more All of their kittens go through a foster home until fully vetted and available for adoption. This allows the foster to know the personality of the kittens, which is important when placing them in the right home. I love that the adults get to free roam in their area. The volunteers spend a lot of time with the cats and know a lot about them. They get a lot of love and are spoiled! I see some negative reviews here which is sad. Remember, there is NO paid staff. Everybody is a volunteer, giving their time to caring for the cats. The volunteers are only there at certain times. So there could be a lag in responding to emails, applications or answering the phone. Give them a break. Or better yet.....sign up to volunteer and help out somehow. Rescues always need volunteers and foster homes. To some, their adoption policy may seem strict. It may be. However, they're not looking to lower numbers and move cats, like the larger, open intake shelters. They want the right cat in the right home so it's a win-win for everyone. And being a smaller, private shelter, they can make that happen. They are a 501-c, non-profit and get no government funding. The rely solely on donations and truly appreciate all who donate.

We got our boy from animal aid and they have helped us so much. We have never once had an issue with them! Strongly, strongly recommend. I want to add because I saw this in other reviews that gave one star: THEY WILL NOT ADOPT TO YOU IF YOURE LOOKING FOR AN EMOTIONAL SUPPORT ANIMAL!!! These dogs need more support than you'd be willing to give them, and they make that very clear even on the adoption application. It's not easy taking in a broken dog, but it's so worth it to change their life. If you're looking for a dog to help you, animal aid isn't the place to go

It was in my best professional interest not to wear or carry any leather items (shoes, purses, etc.) which I did not. I don't know if it is true today, back then the various floors were designated "dog" or "cat" floors and employees at PETA were allowed to bring their pets, or "companions" or "companion animals" as I understand PETA prefers the latter terms, to work with them! A strong word of warning about Dr. Ashley Powell and Animal Medical Center:…read more We took our dog in for an emergent but common procedure. He was diagnosed quickly and surgery was recommended (to be performed by Dr. Koegel). Hours go by with no updates so I called to find out what was going on. Dr. Ashley Powell (the co-owner of the practice) got on the phone to tell me our dog died during surgery and Dr. Koegel was upset so she sent her home. Dr. Powell gave an - we don't really know what happened the procedure itself went great he just didn't do well - explanation of what happened. We went in to say goodbye and during our second post-surgical interaction she said the same thing - no clear explanation of what happened. My husband and I are both in medicine and knew something was off here. On our THIRD conversation after demanding to know what transpired during the procedure step by step (and demanding to speak to the lead surgeon Dr. Koegel) we learned that Dr Koegel mistakenly cut into our dogs diaphragm and called Dr. Powell into the room to help stabilize him while Dr. Koegel attempted to suture the laceration. This unforced surgical error was what killed our dog (admitted by all parties in our 4th conversation). What is more disturbing to me than a mistake happening during a procedure is the lack of professionalism, transparency and ethics by Dr. Koegel and Dr. Powell at every step. Dr. Powell runs the practice and found it reasonable to send Dr Koegel home instead of doing the ethical thing of facing the family and explaining what happened and taking that responsibility. Most importantly, Dr. Powell was not honest during the first two conversations about what happened during the procedure even though she was in the room. Medical professionals have a solemn obligation to conduct themselves with integrity even in the tough moments and Drs. Powell & Koegel lack that fidelity. We can't accept the idea of something like this happening to another family so please reconsider your vet care - Dr. Powell also co-owns Ally Urgent Medical Care off North Great Neck Rd in addition to co-owning Animal Medical Center. Dr. Koegel has since left AMC.
