It was Thanksgiving Day, and after hours of driving through Kansas on our way back to Phoenix, my…read morehusband and I discovered something very important: Absolutely *everything* was closed. Well... almost everything. =) This little restaurant was one of the only places we could find open, and by the time we arrived, it was obvious the manager and his small crew were already preparing themselves for the tidal wave of hungry travelers that was about to descend upon them. And honestly, I have to give them tremendous credit. While most people were home gathered around tables with family, turkey, and pumpkin pie, this small group of hardworking people had chosen to spend their Thanksgiving feeding complete strangers passing through town. One of the staff members helping was the manager's daughter, and despite the growing crowd and nonstop activity, everyone maintained such genuinely positive attitudes that the entire place felt unexpectedly uplifting. The manager himself took time to speak with us and shared how grateful he was for the kindness and generosity shown by the owners of the establishment. There was something deeply sincere and humble about the conversation that stayed with me long after we left. It reminded me that there are still genuinely good-hearted people out there quietly doing the right thing without fanfare. As for the food, we kept things simple -- burgers, fries, and onion rings. Nothing particularly fancy, but perfectly passable for a Thanksgiving travel lunch. But honestly, the food was not what made this stop memorable. It was the spirit of the place. Kansas is often considered part of the American heartland, and sitting there on Thanksgiving Day watching exhausted travelers, hardworking employees, and grateful customers all crossing paths together somehow felt like a small glimpse into the kindness and resilience that still exists quietly across the country. By the time we got back on the road, I found myself oddly thankful we had stopped there at all. Sometimes the places you remember most are not the luxurious ones. Sometimes they are simply the places that made you feel welcomed when you needed it most.

It wasn't bad, it wasn't great. The brand of root beer probably to blame. Coming back home, we stopped again. First, I can't imagine getting a larger (although I probably will next time haha) because the medium is pretty big considering how much toppings are included. It was probably the best ice cream treat I've ever had. I seriously might have to drive back to Spangles to get it again (probably not, but definitely will find Spangles when I'm out and about again and order the same thing). One star off for how messy it was when it was handed to me. I'm in a car with all this goop flowing out because the put the lid on with cherries and stuff on the rim of the cup. I ended up basically making a diaper out of 100 napkins to protect myself and the car.

This is always a good thing. They serve breakfast all day, numerous burgers, sandwiches, and various plates. We ordered the reuben and BLT sandwiches and the catfish plate with mac n cheese. The veggie of the day was green beans. Everything was good except for the mac n cheese, which didn't taste very fresh -- you can tell the pasta and cheese had become coagulated. It wasn't creamy cheesy as good quality mac n cheese should be. Wasn't even homemade. And the green beans? Straight from the can! It was mushy and bland. Who wants to eat soggy green beans?!
