I have opted to include this branch of Subway out of a sense of civic duty and a curiously compelling need to serve the public interest... I really don't know what's come over me! I think it's because I sense that a tussle of 'David and Goliath' proportions is playing itself out on a microcosmic level, here in this tiny pocket of commercial interest, on an otherwise residential road. The big boys seem to be squeezing the small independents until their pips squeak.
There's a Tesco's as well as this branch of Subway merrily undercutting their immediate rivals, which comprise of a couple of great little take-away's and a corner convenience store. I'm going to leave Tesco's alone in this instance as I think North Stores is sufficiently diverse and competitive to hold its own. But I can't bring myself to temper my disdain for the very dreadful Subway. I'm aghast at the idea that a company that mass-produces nutritionally bereft baguettes of the blandest variety manages to stay in business, especially when there's quality convenience food directly opposite.
So, in short, I urge to ignore the ridiculously low prices that they attach to their unhealthy, unsatisfying snacks, and do yourselves a favour, and buy yourself something a lot more wholesome across the road. read more
