Great Rink other than suffered a year in the stands with NO heat. They finally have it corrected. Just in time as the season is ending.

My kid use to play hockey here, thank god we left and went to GLSA. The ice at Suburban Ice Macomb is amazing but the hockey is terrible.

2017-10-22. The New Rink is located in Shelby Twp, MI. It has it's own parking lot with literally…read morehundreds of parking spaces. Last known as Maxx Play, the 90K sq. ft. facility was also the former home for a plethora of businesses that failed the test of time. From bounce castles, to paintball, to Whirlyball before it. The place was shut down in 2009's and it sat empty for a couple of years. In 2011, the new owners refurbished and renovated, and reopened as The New Rink Roller Sports Complex. Some of the original decor remained, the original entrance, the wood floor skating area, and those globe chandeliers. And with the vast space, they were able to maintain most of the original businesses. In addition to the rink, A separate section with bounce houses remained, as well as a separate section for an arcade. There was also a closed off section I wasn't quite able to see, but it looked like another rink (Roller Hockey? Private party?). And, of course, facilities for parties, complete with a snack bar. Lastly, there is a pro shop to cover all sorts of repairs and carries items for you to purchase. But the reason why I'm writing about this place is simply because it exists. With a bowling alley up the street, two trampoline parks and a rock climbing gym nearby, and a laser tag facility down the street, this rink rounds out activities nicely for the area. During the summer, they have admission specials and skate programs to help occupy our kids and getting in some physical activity to boot! 4 stars overall. For those of you wondering, I think the Paint Ball business is still there. I didn't see an entrance from the inside, so I'm assuming it's only accessible from the plaza. If you would like to experience more, come dine-with-me.yelp.com I'd love to have your company.

Then, when my daughter and I went to the woman bathroom near the soccer/ hockey rink there was a man using the bathroom with the stall door open. He did not flush the toilet or wash his hands and when we told the rental manager she said " oh they do that all the time" as if it was ok and normal.

It is worth noting that this appears to be a localized issue; we know coaches and parents at the other rinks associated with Suburban, and these problems do not seem to be present there. Based on our experience at the Suburban Rochester location, families should be aware of the following: Inconsistent Coaching Standards: There have been frequent issues with coaches arriving late to practices and games. More concerning is that official coaches have been absent from the bench during games, with non-certified parents filling in, which is against USA Hockey rules. Lack of Oversight: Concerns regarding coaching and player retention were shared with the Youth Hockey Director last season, specifically regarding coaches telling players they were not going to receive play time, which led to players quitting. In a house league. Despite this feedback, no changes were made and the same staff was retained. It appears there is very little accountability once the non-refundable fees are paid. Practice Quality: At the 14U level, the league rosters nearly 20 players and practices on a half-ice sheet. At this age and size, this leads to practices that are crowded and slow. Our experience was that practice sessions lacked structured drills and consisted mostly of half-ice scrimmaging, where players who were not involved just stood around. There was no focus on skill development, positional play, or other fundamentals. Disproportionate Instruction & Ice Time: The instruction and ice time are heavily weighted toward the top 4-5 players and the coaches' own children. Unless your child is one of the top players on the team, you will be paying the same amount as everyone else but receiving significantly less ice time and instruction than those few players, despite it being a house/rec league, it is treated more like travel. It would be beneficial to see the association prioritize the growth of every player on the team, rather than just a select few. Until then, parents should look at other locations or leagues where the high cost of registration is matched by equitable development for all players.

The other women in the group don't mind changing with the men but I prefer not to, so I requested a separate room (women's changing room, referee room, etc). The woman at the counter, who was less than pleasant, said she "couldn't let" me use a ref room or any other locker room in any of their FOUR rinks. She offered me a place to change with no skate mats, in the furthest rink (1) from the one we were playing on (4). This is totally unacceptable in 2025! I play in many different arenas around Detroit and Toledo, several in much less affluent cities than Troy, and they all provide me with some place to change that can accommodate my skates and is not a public restroom.

There are many reasons to like this facility, namely the large locker rooms, quality ice surfaces, and the pro-shop located in the lobby. The pro-shop is a separate business, but they have all of your equipment needs and can do a good job on your skate sharpening and repairs. There is a snack shop and plenty of vending machines, but there is no bar or alcohol sales. This rink has the full compliment of learn-to-skate, open-skate, youth hockey at all levels and mens' league. I didn't rate this 5 stars because the building is outdated and is missing a few of the modern touches of a true multi-plex. It's still a great place to play, practice or watch hockey.

I hadn't roller skated since I was 12 and now I'm a really confident skater. It's a great workout too! You won't get this kind of attention and instruction anywhere else. This place focuses on adult skaters, age 21 and older. The classes are small. I took a class for one hour on Sundays with the same 8 people and we kept building upon what we learned. Adjustments and modifications are available for people with injuries too. We had students of all ages in this class, from 30's to 70's and we could all do it and work at our level. This personalized type of class doesn't exist anywhere else. Also, on Wednesday nights at 8:30pm, you can come here and practice and skate for $10. (They have free parking available out front.) I had the good fortune to be taught by the owner, Keith. Keith is a spectacular skater and human being. He is kind, patient, funny, and an excellent teacher. He has truly built a supportive skating community and I'm honored to be a part of it. Keith offers a variety of classes and he is also working on new classes to offer. He's open to ideas and feedback too. I'll be taking a class on outdoor skating next, as well a workshop on backwards skating. Learning how to skate here was the best decision I've made in a long time. I highly recommend taking class and joining this awesome skating community!
