Very cool spot to meet up before diving into some Bird pizza or going out elsewhere. I just wish someone told us this place was attached to Bird Pizzeria through the bathroom hallway. You can have a nice glass of wine outside or inside. Super nice staff. Met our friends here before our reservation at Bird Pizzeria. Had a few glasses of wine here. Very cool vibe.

Substrate is the natural wine capital of the world (or at least Charlotte) the staff is excellent - incredibly knowledgeable and they have great taste! You're missing out if you don't collect some recommendations or natural wine facts from them. Their offerings are unique and they have maintained that since they opened their doors. They are rightfully popular and have totally earned it. Hanging out at Substrate feels like hanging out at your best friend's house if you do it right. Cozy interior, interesting records spinning, funky seats and rooms, intimate bar, retail wine for anyone and everyone, and a disco ball. Only bring the friends you reallllly like to visit here. Substrate is a gem!

What an awesome spot!!! We came in tonight looking for a chill (yet lively) vibe, and we were not disappointed! The bartender definitely knew his stuff and recommended a great bottle of Côtes du Rhône, and we absolutely loved the space - it's cozy, eclectic, welcoming, quirky... all the best things just steps from Optimist Hall. We can't wait to bring friends here for more wine & vermouth nights - it's a winner!

Cool, very chill vibes! Great, friendly service. Really cool wine selection. Happy to have this place in the neighborhood!

Excellent recommendation for a wine to have with a seafood, pasta dish!

The lost art of a cool now found, unpretentious, NoDA-ish neighborhood wine bar has been found. Off the beaten trek from the 36th street business, Substrate provides all the feels you want and those you didn't know you wanted in Area 15. If you don't know, well now you know! Substrate is nestled behind Bird Pizza, a newer pizza joint and, if you go into either establishment, you end up at the other. Literally a common area/hallway separates them. They have a small parking lot that is on the backside of Bird Pizza, which is essentially the entrance to Substrate. They also have a good size outdoor deck with a decent amount of seating. The inside gives this feel as though you are walking into someone's home. This "someone" has the undeniable cool factor I personally thought we lost in NoDa, until Substrate came to the neighborhood. There is limited seating inside but they do have cozy options. All the staff are extremely friendly and attentive. Matt who owns and runs the bar definitely knows a lot about wine and has very strong opinions about what he prefers to serve or recommend by the glass options or bottles. After you speak with him, you realize how much of him is in this place, and its very well executed. I happen to come in on a Wednesday when they have free wine tastings. I was extremely impressed by the wine distributor who hosted the wine tasting. He dove into detail for each tasting with enthusiasm. You didn't feel like you were being spoken to, but rather, in a conversation with him. This particular day it was extremely hot outside, so I sat in the common area with a glass of orange wine which I newly learned about and thoroughly enjoyed. Matt also spent a good amount of time helping me select a bottle of wine for dinner. He also mentioned that he has been contacted by a number of local chefs for private dinners which I am extremely excited to see come to fruition. If its not obvious, I am a fan. I will be going back for the authentic vibe and unique approach to teaching me new wines I wouldn't have otherwise considered. Cheers!

My friend Surya and his empty wine. It was a jammy sparkling wine and he loved it!

A cool, cozy space with a very interesting wine list. Looks like the outdoor space is fantastic when it's warm.

DISCLAIMER *This review is about 5 years old* It sat in my…read moredrafts because I don't like to leave negative reviews but I feel it should be stated. This was easily the worst experience I've ever had at a restaurant from start to finish. I'm not saying they're racist, but I can't say that they aren't. I'll let you be the judge of that. All I know is that none of the Caucasian people around me shared the same experience. Let me explain: We came for dinner before the Charlotte Orchestra show right across from the restaurant last Friday night. Let me start by saying that there were only 5-6 tables full at one time while we were there. I met my friend, who is also black, at 6:40; she had gotten there around 6:15 and placed her order. Not only had she not received her meal by the time I got there, 15 minutes later no one had come to our table to take my order until I flagged a waiter down and asked for our server. Meanwhile, every table that was sat around us was provided ice waters moments after arrival and their orders were taken promptly thereafter. When our waitress finally came to our table she either wasn't knowledgeable about the menu or didn't care enough to tell me what their current dip selection was, instead she said that she would check with the chef. I put in my order for the steakhouse burger that she recommended cooked medium and we waited a little over 15 minutes more before my friends burger came out and was taken to every table on the patio except ours before they took it back inside and then finally brought it back out to her. Needless to say the fries were cold at that point and the black bean burger was lukewarm. We were both starving so she reluctantly ate what she could before sitting it aside. I waited and waited for the waitress to come tell me what dips were in the trio appetizer before finally flagging her down as she passed our table without making eye contact. She finally told me and disappeared again after I added the trio to my order. My burger finally comes out over 30 minutes after I ordered it and it's raw, like pink all the way around and oozing bloody juices raw. I turn to my fries for sustenance and they are just meh but at least they're hot. Gotta celebrate the small wins. I show my waitress the raw burger and tell her that I don't want anything else because we didn't have time to wait since we're now late to our show due to the lack of service. She disappears again for so long that I had to go inside and find a manager who stated that they were "short staffed but that is no excuse." I accept the lame half apology and go back to wait for our check that never came. We had to go back inside and ask for it. When we did the manager finally said that he would comp both of our meals. That was the only highlight of the situation. I'm hopeful that the service has improved since this happened however I will continue to steer clear of this place.

The last couple of times I've been was with my work group. We ordered several items for our table and then we also ordered entrées. Each time I visited this location everything is very nice and clean and the food as spicy as it is is very well seasoned and tasty. All of the sauces and curry creams were cooked to perfection hot in temperature not too hot to enjoy. Our servers were very kind and patient and courteous to us as we made our decisions. They also made perfect combination for our selections. And the best selections for drinks and desserts. Since then, I've even ordered on Uber eats and my food came just as perfect. This is a great go to place for good Indian food. If you're in the uptown area it's located below the Green parking lot, which is across from the Knight theater. It's just a good place even if you want a good drink at the bar. Enjoy!

I recently stopped by the restaurant in the Charlotte Westin: Dogwood Southern Table and Bar. The…read morespace was airy, modern and light with a 360 degree bar, high ceilings and well spaced tables. I was intrigued by the item "Chef's Bite", that's it, no further explanation. As I suspected, it was an 'amuse bouche' offered from the kitchen. Today it was a Deviled Egg with a mustard-forward center, even containing black mustard seeds for flavor and crunch. As a fan of Sicilian arancini, I ordered the Dogwood's version as an appetizer. I was surprised to see several small rice balls, the size of hush puppies. I was expecting a single larger offering; 'arancini' after all mean orange in Italian. The risotto spheres were stuffed with pimento cheese and instead of the typical marina sauce, the kitchen had substituted a tomato jam with a subtle sweet finish. It was a successful southern riff on a Sicilian standard. Although I had been directed to order the Duck and Dumplings, my eye drifted to the Shrimp and Grits. I hadn't had much Carolinian food this trip.... The dish did not disappoint. It was amply loaded with flavorful shrimp and accented with good-quality andouille sausage slices, all over a well executed plate of grits. Service was prompt, professional and knowledgeable. This one is going in the book to return to.

Ridiculous. The Dinner Menu is posted on front of the restaurant AND online, with no mention the limited menu was the only option. Our server told us he completely understood our dissatisfaction, and said that we were welcome to go elsewhere. At that point, we didn't have the time to shift gears or we would have done so. While 3 of 4 couldn't get what we came in for, the food we had was good. Duck & Dumplings was probably the best dish. Two got the Shrimp & Grits and said it was good. My Ceasar Salad with chicken was pretty tasty, too. Service from Devon was very good and food runners delivered food to the right spots without prompting. I went back later in the evening for a bite and cocktail at the bar and I was completely ignored. Bartenders kept just clearing and taking orders from people walking up. Infuriating. Its a shame that the restaurant is just poorly managed.
