Substrate is the natural wine capital of the world (or at least Charlotte) the staff is excellent - incredibly knowledgeable and they have great taste! You're missing out if you don't collect some recommendations or natural wine facts from them. Their offerings are unique and they have maintained that since they opened their doors. They are rightfully popular and have totally earned it. Hanging out at Substrate feels like hanging out at your best friend's house if you do it right. Cozy interior, interesting records spinning, funky seats and rooms, intimate bar, retail wine for anyone and everyone, and a disco ball. Only bring the friends you reallllly like to visit here. Substrate is a gem!

What an awesome spot!!! We came in tonight looking for a chill (yet lively) vibe, and we were not disappointed! The bartender definitely knew his stuff and recommended a great bottle of Côtes du Rhône, and we absolutely loved the space - it's cozy, eclectic, welcoming, quirky... all the best things just steps from Optimist Hall. We can't wait to bring friends here for more wine & vermouth nights - it's a winner!

Cool, very chill vibes! Great, friendly service. Really cool wine selection. Happy to have this place in the neighborhood!

Excellent recommendation for a wine to have with a seafood, pasta dish!

The lost art of a cool now found, unpretentious, NoDA-ish neighborhood wine bar has been found. Off the beaten trek from the 36th street business, Substrate provides all the feels you want and those you didn't know you wanted in Area 15. If you don't know, well now you know! Substrate is nestled behind Bird Pizza, a newer pizza joint and, if you go into either establishment, you end up at the other. Literally a common area/hallway separates them. They have a small parking lot that is on the backside of Bird Pizza, which is essentially the entrance to Substrate. They also have a good size outdoor deck with a decent amount of seating. The inside gives this feel as though you are walking into someone's home. This "someone" has the undeniable cool factor I personally thought we lost in NoDa, until Substrate came to the neighborhood. There is limited seating inside but they do have cozy options. All the staff are extremely friendly and attentive. Matt who owns and runs the bar definitely knows a lot about wine and has very strong opinions about what he prefers to serve or recommend by the glass options or bottles. After you speak with him, you realize how much of him is in this place, and its very well executed. I happen to come in on a Wednesday when they have free wine tastings. I was extremely impressed by the wine distributor who hosted the wine tasting. He dove into detail for each tasting with enthusiasm. You didn't feel like you were being spoken to, but rather, in a conversation with him. This particular day it was extremely hot outside, so I sat in the common area with a glass of orange wine which I newly learned about and thoroughly enjoyed. Matt also spent a good amount of time helping me select a bottle of wine for dinner. He also mentioned that he has been contacted by a number of local chefs for private dinners which I am extremely excited to see come to fruition. If its not obvious, I am a fan. I will be going back for the authentic vibe and unique approach to teaching me new wines I wouldn't have otherwise considered. Cheers!

My friend Surya and his empty wine. It was a jammy sparkling wine and he loved it!

My favorite bar in Charlotte. Such chill vibes, good wine, good beer. The owner and bartenders are the nicest and super knowledgeable.

A cool, cozy space with a very interesting wine list. Looks like the outdoor space is fantastic when it's warm.

Reid's Fine Foods

As a foodie transplant from the West Coast, walking into Reid's immediately reminded me of a…read morebeloved high-end grocer back home--something along the lines of Draeger's: beautifully curated, family-owned, and designed to feel like a destination rather than just a place to shop. There's a real sense of history here. From what I understand, Reid's is one of the oldest grocers in Charlotte, and that legacy shows in the details. The rich green tile, classic signage, and thoughtfully designed layout create an elevated, almost European-style market experience. It feels polished, intentional, and welcoming all at once. What stands out: * The store is beautifully merchandised and carefully curated with specialty and seasonal items you don't always find elsewhere. * The wine bar and café concept make this more than a grocery stop--it's a place to linger. I've enjoyed flights, tastings, and brunch on the patio, and each visit has felt like a small occasion. * Location-wise, it really depends on which store you're visiting. The SouthPark and Myers Park locations have easy, convenient parking, and there's also a newer location in Ballantyne (near Pineville). The Uptown locations, while not necessarily "easy parking," are incredibly walkable--perfect if you live, work, or have meetings nearby. If you're already Uptown, this is a fantastic stop to pick up elevated items for a beautiful dinner--think wine, specialty cheeses, or even something indulgent like caviar to round things out. One thing I appreciate is that Reid's doesn't try to be everything to everyone. It's not an organic-focused market like Whole Foods, and that's okay--it serves a different purpose. The clientele here tends to be people looking for specialty ingredients, elevated prepared foods, and a more curated shopping experience. Many shoppers probably visit both stores depending on their needs, and I find myself doing the same. When Reid's really shines: During the holidays and special seasons. Their selection of unique, festive, and hard-to-find items makes it a go-to for entertaining or finding something a little extra special. Overall, Reid's feels like a true Charlotte institution--elegant, distinctive, and consistently well executed. It's the kind of place that makes grocery shopping feel enjoyable again, and I'm looking forward to continuing to explore more of what they offer as I keep eating my way through Charlotte. Bottom line: A beautifully curated local market with history, charm, and a destination-worthy wine bar--perfect for specialty shopping, brunch, and seasonal finds.

Huge shout out to our server, Nas, who was on the ball all night. Thanks for a great evening! We started with a dozen sweet, plump oysters with very little brine. Exactly our style. Clean, fresh, and delicious. That flavor bomb I mentioned earlier? The pimento cheese fritters. This was seriously a mouth orgasm, yeah I said it. Crispy, spicy crust with warm pimento cheese oozing out of the center. Add the house made buttermilk dip and it's pure heaven. Everything else was top notch as well. Flavorful and tender calamari, freshly made clam chowder, seafood tagliatelle, and a wagyu burger that absolutely melts in your mouth with two smashed patties. One thing was better than the other. This place is definitely a staple anytime we're out in Charlotte.

The standout for us was definitely the Cuban -- a super creative take on a classic, with that perfect balance of "original with a twist." El Italiano was a close second, packed with flavor and just the right texture. The torta was solid too, just a little spicy for my like, but I never checked if it was, and the Caprese made for a fresh, lighter option, it was missing the fresh mozzarella and fresh tomatoes. Service was fair. Overall, the place has a chill vibe, the food came out quickly, and we'd come back to try more of the menu.

The ladies behind the counter were really sweet and that's always appreciated!! Here's what we ordered and my thought on each: - Quesadilla: it was just okay, needed a smidge more flavor. - Chicken torta: ABSOLUTELY delicious. By far our fav item. I would come back again and again for this!!! - Tacos for Taco Tuesday: these weren't bad, the steak was just really tough. They had pretty good flavor otherwise. - Coquito latte: this was freakin' amazing, so tasty and flavorful. It was sweet but not overly sweet. I would definitely go back and recommend anyone to try them out! It's also so beautiful in side with soooo many plants all over the place. The other cool thing is some of the plants are for sale. The even sell plant pots. It's a really cool community-esque type space in the middle of Uptown. It's a great addition.

That said, the music just doesn't match the energy of the space. It's upbeat, but not in a way that makes you want to sing along or actually dance. I was really hoping for more of a mixed genre where you can have those fun, in-your-own-little-corner dance moments, and it just fell a bit flat there. If they ever level up the music, this place would honestly be perfect. Charlotte really needs a spot that combines this kind of beautiful ambiance with music you can actually move to.
