Completely vegetarian Chinese food and it's cheaper than any "regular" Chinese place I've ever…read moreordered food from in the Netherlands. No worrying about whether or not that piece of "ham" was actual ham or tofu. No stress about finding a very meaty chunk of something in my sateh sauce. And no more wondering about mystery ingredients such as trassi or fish sauce possibly being used in my vegetarian dishes. Soy is just completely vegetarian and there's no mucking about, I love it. What could I love even more about vegetarian Chinese food? Well, besides already having a much wider range of dishes to choose from (over a hundred here as opposed to the same four dishes at any other Chinese of which two are noodles) they also add a lot of extra vegetables to their dishes at Soy. Which really helps to stretch an already reasonably priced take-out meal into a cheap dinner, breakfast and lunch because this food really fills you up. And let's be honest, we all know with Chinese food that we overeat, feel completely stuffed and don't understand how we'll ever eat again but then half an hour later suddenly have this massive hunger and wonder whether we've actually ever eaten any food before in our entire lives and then scoff down the leftovers like a rabid coyote. Well, suffice it to say I've never had that vicious overeating cycle with food from Soy. An added bonus: because I can eat everything here, I aim to try at least one new dish every time we come here. This is how I've discovered that I adore Koe-Loe-Yuk, which are little balls of "shredded meat", battered and fried and then served in a delicious sweet and sour sauce. So yummy and I definitely recommend that you try it too! To sum Soy up: -No worrying about meat or seafood showing up in my meal -Cheaper than it's non-vegetarian renditions -Actually a nutritious, delicious, wholesome and filling take out meal -In case you were wondering, yes, they're also vegan friendly And to close it off, my pro-tip: make sure you bring cash! No cards here but at least there's an ATM at about a five minute walk from Soy and it's totally worth the walk!

Still it took me quite a while to go because it is 1. in Utrecht which is not around the corner, and 2. in is also not in the center of Utrecht so when I am there if often go to another place that is more located in the center of town. Last weekend we were actually on our way to another place but the event there got canceled so we decided to finally go to Soy, since we were by car anyway. That was a good choice! Almost all of their food is vegan, except for a few agg dishes. The staff was very friendly and welcoming. The restaurant itself is quite small and it is mostly meant for take-away. There are stil about 5 tables though, so eating in is also fine. We ate some delicious food like vegan chicken with cashews, veggies and noodles, nasi rice with brown tofu and sauce and fried bananas. Sooo good! I understand now what all the fuss was about :)

My wife and I went there for an early dinner and we were seated in a small back room. The cuisine is Indian and everything is exceptionally fresh. We ordered the "Kebab Assortment", which wasn't at all what we were expecting (no skewers). One was ground beef spiced with coriander, one was lentil and ground beef with spices, the last was egg wrapped in potato. You got two of each of these, a tasty salad and a large basket of fresh-made naan that was some of the best we had ever had. All of the kebabs were tender and very flavorful, and the naan worked well to sop up some of the drippings from the kebabs. To drink we had mango lassi with ginger that was excellent. The service was helpful but slow, and I could not use my US credit card (which doesn't use the European chip and PIN system.) I'd definitely go back again.

To be clear, the neither the food nor the restaurant are traditional Indian, but Indian food is a heavy influence on their menu. The restaurant is a bit more upscale than what I'm accustomed to at many of my favorite Indian restaurants but not so much that it felt snobby; the ambiance was clean, well lit, and tastefully decorated in a modern European style. I'm happy that I looked at the menu in advance online, as they have an English version of the menu on their website but not in the restaurant. I ordered the Nihari Stew, which was a lightly spiced beef stew with some raw(!) diced peppers and onions in it, as well as some fresh seasonings on the side that I could add including hot chilis, a slice of lime, coriander leaves and ginger. I found that the stew was tasty and the beef was well cooked, but the flavor & number of ingredients was a bit more plain/simple that I expected, and beyond the beef, the other ingredients were all raw which didn't seem to be the best complement to a beef stew. I would have liked some cooked vegetables in it. The seasonings on the side didn't seem to be a good match either, though I love those flavors in other foods. It came with a basket of naan wedges; the naan (an Indian flat bread) appears in a lot of menu items, and I found it to be not as soft and fluffy as I expect naan to be, perhaps because it's made with whole grain flour; I would describe it as roti rather than naan. It's not bad, just mislabeled for those of us who are familiar with Indian cuisine. The restaurant has an extensive menu of wines and cocktails, but partly to save money I opted for a mango lassi instead (traditional Indian yogurt drink), which had a hint of seasoning that gave it an unusual flavor (cucumber water? not sure, it was hard to identify), and was thicker than most mango lassi's I've tried, more like a smoothie. All in all I came away from the meal a bit disappointed, as I was expecting it to have more of the aspects of Indian food that I love, but perhaps it's simply an issue of my expectations rather than the food itself. I also felt it was a bit pricey, charging €16 for a main entree, though I know that organic ingredients do cost more, so I felt the cost was enabling them to use high quality, healthy ingredients. It might be a better place for a tasty snack and beverage than a full meal if you're on a tight budget. Note that the only type of card they accept is the Maestro chip + pin debit card, otherwise make sure to bring enough cash to pay for your meal! Red Chili does nothing but disappoint with mediocre food, terrible service and ridiculous wait times. My advice is to avoid this place because you will leave with an empty stomach and an even emptier wallet. Food: 1/5 You can order from several set menus or a la carte. We chose the 5 course "surprise" menu, and boy were we surprised... and not in a good way. The amuse and the first few courses were tasty but nothing amazing. However, when we reached our 4th course, the beef was practically raw on all 4 plates. We rarely send food back in the kitchen but this beef was raw and at room temperature. There was no way to chew it, let alone eat it like that. For a restaurant of this standard and price, I should not be getting raw meat. Also, the portions were tiny and I was still hungry. I wasn't a huge fan of it and might even be slightly offended, but I suppose if you are not Asian you wouldn't be so confused by all the buddha heads randomly placed in the dining room. One thing I really disliked though was how low the chairs and high the tables were. It was very difficult to eat and my arms could not reach over the table. Perhaps it is designed for the Dutch giants, but with chairs so low their knees would have been super uncomfortable. It wasn't pleasant for me either and I have short legs! Also this same problem repeats again in the women's toilet. The furniture selection must have been done by a child because the proportions make no sense. Value: 0/5 The surprise menu was 35 euros per person, without drinks. Let's say that I wouldn't eat here again even if it was free.
