Golden Beach Melt

Run, don't walk to this incredible sandwich spot in the Gulf Place community in Santa Rosa Beach. We first ate at Sub Shack for lunch the Monday of our annual Sat-Sat beach trip in peak Summer season. We had actually planned to go the day before, at my husband's request, for Father's Day; however, this establishment is closed on Sundays, which I fully support. 100% worth. the. wait. We were traveling with 4 hungry teens from 14-18 years old, and everyone unhesitatingly agreed these were the best subs we've ever eaten. Nothing underscores this opinion like the frequency of our visits during the week: members of our group visited a total of 3 more times over the following 4 days. One morning, one teen even waited til they opened to grab a meatball sub (the "Beachball") for breakfast. Sandwiches, each thoroughly enjoyed by our party, included the aforementioned Beachball, Golden Beach Melt, Boardwalk Italiano (Italian), Grilled Chicken (hot sub), Turkey (cold sub), Ham (cold sub), and kid's Grilled Cheese. The standout feature of the subs is their white bread... omg, the bread. I'll never be satisfied with any sub roll in my life after experiencing Sub Shack's perfect vessel. It's substantially springy inside, with a softly cracking crust on the exterior. The filling-to-bread ratio is very well balanced. You don't need 8 million glugs of water to chase down the overly dominant roll size like with a lot of sub places. Other observations from those in our group below. Turkey sub (cold): "perfect balance of toppings, great bread, yummy" Beachball (hot): "One of the best sandwich I've ever had. I'm someone who doesn't love hot subs, but the beachball honestly made me fall in love again. The bread is amazing, so is the sauce, and don't even get me started on the meatballs. 10/10 would recommend" Grilled Cheese: "it was good cause it was a good light lunch that didn't make you feel stuffed" Boardwalk Italiano: " it was the best sandwich I've ever had in my life. It was a perfect blend of meat and vegetables, with nothing overpowering one item over another. Dressing was perfect, and, of course, the bread was the absolute star of the show." Being a veteran-owned local business run by some really nice folks only adds to the reasons to give this place a try. Grab one of the best subs you've ever tasted and support this place before Alvin's Island pushes out another special business in Gulf Place.

Fabulous subs, made by nice people! I had the Shack Stack, and it was delicious - at a fair price. It's going to be one of my local favs now!

The prime rib was actually well done, and tough. The salmon Benedict was chewy, not supposed to be. Potatoes were actually cold, when I went to get my prime rib, one of the workers did not want to help me, so he simply stepped back and pointed at another worker to help me. We were served water in plastic cups, and no decorations on any of the tables, for the fantastic Mom's. The Bloody Mary was not good...no mix, just vodka and Tobasco. The photograph on their advertisement for this Mother's Day brunch, showed a plate of food and a mimosa. They offered no description of what was included for the $95 per person. I called them twice and left two messages. I also left a message on their Facebook page, simply asking for a description of what the $95 included. No response, nothing. This is a place that is highly recommended on 38, and we see no reason to recommend this place to anybody or to ever revisit going here. Also, upon asking our waitress for our check, we were told that there would be an automatic gratuity added, which turned out to be just over $60. Non negotiable. We watched the manager who was resting a khaki colored suit, white hair, and glasses, walk around to almost every table in the restaurant, except for ours. We will not be back. Our opinion is that it is overpriced, subpar, quality food, nothing fresh about anything, average service, and really sneaky with the service fee that they add on after your meal is completed. Thank you.

BLUF: Best service in Santa Rosa Beach and a menu that offers coastal and American fare…read more I love a fish camp! Not that I have ever been to a real fish camp but a restaurant with fish camp in the name calls to me so my sister and I visited Stinky's for an early lunch. Stinky's is an awesome spot for lunch because you can get half of a salad and half of a po' boy or half of a po' boy with a cup of soup. I was tempted by those halfsies combinations but ultimately I went with a basket. Much to my surprise, the basket could be ordered fried, grilled or blackened. I went with blackened shrimp and they were excellent - perfectly seasoned and perfectly cooked. So many places and people (myself included) overcook shrimp but these were timed perfectly! The basket also included tasty, crispy, big curly fries and hush puppies. What's not to love about fried dough but the hush puppies weren't my favorite. Those shrimp on the other hand . . . I am still thinking about them! I am sorry I am not remembering our server's name because he was awesome and absolutely deserves a shout out. He was super kind, attentive and personable. He had my heart when we offered me a Diet Coke to go. I'd go back to Stinky's just for his hospitality . . . And those blackened shrimp. The atmosphere is very casual and it has its own parking lot. Next door is Stinky's Bait Shop which is a unique spot offering fish and tackle, coffee, happy hour and a casual simple breakfast. I look forward to returning to Stinky's - either the restaurant or bait shop, maybe both!

While waiting, we sat at the bar. I ordered a Paloma. It was tasty and the presentation was nice. However, we saw a cockroach in the straw container on the bar. We told the bar tender and she threw half the straws away. We told her she needed to toss all of them and she did. I couldn't finish my drink after that. The wait was very long. On the phone they told us it would be 20-30 minutes. It was 2 hours. They told us the reason was because another table was overstaying, which didn't make a lot of sense. Our waitress was rude. She was annoyed we wanted separate checks and was very curt. All of us were put off by her attitude. For appetizers, we got the edamame hummus, edamame, Brussels sprouts, and shrimp lettuce wraps. The edamame hummus was weird. It didn't have a ton of flavor and the wasabi peas and ginger on top were just strange. The Brussels sprouts and shrimp wraps were good. The shrimp wrap was probably our favorite app. For my entree, I got Sandor's ravioli. It was good, but not hot. The ravioli was handmade and very cheesy. The fish was perfectly blackened. Unfortunately our bride's steak was undercooked and she didn't want to send it back after the long wait and waitress attitude. I got the key lime pie to go and it took forever to get it. We had to ask another server to get it. It was amazing, but not worth the hold up after an already negative experience. We let the manager know about our experience and while they were very apologetic and offered us a discount, our experience was what it was and we had already paid. I appreciate their acknowledgment and offer to make it right.
