Overall they did a great job. The stylists are nice and pleasant and they are very good at what they do. I had a cut, which came hot great, got color which is awesome- But the Brazilian blowout I am more than a little disappointed with. The stylist was wonderful and took her time with me for hours to do it- but not even three weeks later my hair has recurled and is starting to poof a bit. (Started at barely 2) For how much the Brazilian costs I was really hoping for more time- and when I've had it in the past its lasted more than 8 weeks... read more

I tried several stylists here after my long time gal left the area. I was never really satisfied with the hospitality, the cut, the color or the blow out- although Paul exceptional and incredible and I hope he he opens his own place when he gets his Virginia license. I'm not picky or demanding nor do I require a lot of maintenance but I felt like like I like I was at a car wash here. It really burns me when I leave a 25 dollar tip and don't even get a thank you or eye contact. Come on, now- can't we be nice? read more

Like others said: Incredible snarky, rude, standoffish staff. They made me feel like I came from another planet and wanted to take over their small world. No greeting; no introduction; did the job as quick as they could to get you out of there. Stylists were talking among themselves, but not saying a word to me (client). A couple people were chatty, but only and only to their own clients. They passed by me, continuously like if they were on a highway, and kept going back to their lil room, to gather and chat. I have never seen such a standoffish staff - ever! I have to say. My stylist (Gee! Her name? Who knows?) never introduced herself, and seemed like she wanted to disappear from there and hide somewhere. Others were boring and making stupid jokes among themselves. I was completely ignored. I tried to say a few words to break the ice, to no avail. They continue their small talk among themselves. Hmm... Talk about going to a Vietnamese nail salon? Yeah: Same here, but their were talking in English instead. I gave a decent tip to the stylist, because I am not a jerk,and she did do the job. The service she provided was not bad - per se. Just very quick. But I should have walked away as the first point of contact, at the front desk. Horrible, horrible vibe. Not sure if they have reached capacity of 'well-known/paid' clients, and don't care about anyone else walking in (new customers.) That is how it felt like. Not possible that so many others, here, felt the same way I did! The only reason I stayed and allowed them to do the job, was because it was raining cats and dogs and I have to kill a couple of hours. So, I just shut my mouth, and went with the flow! This guy kept pacing over and over again behind my chair - like if he had ants in his pants or something. No eye contact, no 'hello," a smile, nothing. Just chatty with everyone else. At one point, there were 3 stylists doing one person's hair color! Seriously? One older lady was friendly, but only when I went to pay. Before that, she ignored me too. Very fake! read more

Horrible experience. I went to Style by Design right after I moved to Williamsburg and a week before my son's graduation. What a mistake! I went in for a cut and color. I gave her the formula for my hair color and she still couldn't come close to matching it. When I said that it was much darker than my original color, she said, "oh, that's just the way it looks now, it will be fine" Additionally, I asked for the stylist to take very little off the front and to leave it longer in the front than in the back. She took almost 2 inches off the front and when I mentioned that it was considerably shorter than I asked for, she said she barely touched it! When you have short hair, 2 inches is a lot! Needless to say, I will never go back! read more

I am always a little cautious in trying a new hair salon. This was a terrible experience. I saw Katie B. I asked to have my roots done and asked for a trim on a basic bob haircut. The color she used to do my roots was a full shade darker than the rest of my hair leaving a clear band of dark color at my roots. She left the color on far longer than she said she would and later asked me if it caused my scalp to burn. I said yes she said well, it wasn't unbearable was it? She left a band of dark dye on my face that I could not get off. I had to go to a work event afterwards and I looked ridiculous with so much dark hair dye staining my face. Maybe I'm spoiled by good hair salons but this is not something I've ever had to deal with. I've always been able to go get my roots done on my lunch hour and pop back to work. It's a good 8 hours later and my skin is still stained dark brown. I thought the haircut would be hard to mess up because a bob is pretty basic. She messed that up and shaped it so that the front was shorter than the back rather than the other way around. I'm baffled. It's like she just didn't give a damn. Life is too short to live with bad hair. I'd rather have roots showing and unkempt hair than this mess. read more

So incredibly pleased! After moving here a couple years ago and finally searching for a local stylist last year, I have had some bad luck with other salons (like Bubbles) and it took me a while to finally muster up the courage to meet a new stylist. I set a consultation and met with Sabrina who is very knowledgeable, experienced, and easy to talk to. I just got my highlights and a cut today and I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT! My hair was BEYOND poor condition (fried ends, brassy streaks, and significant root growth) and Sabrina worked some kind of magic with it to make me fabulous again!! Also, I read the "not recommended" comment below from only two months ago about a mom and her kids "not being welcome". Totally NOT the case at all with my experience! I brought my 6yr old son and 6 MONTH old son in because I asked Sabrina during my consult if it was OK and she's a mom of 4 kids herself so it was definitely NOT AN ISSUE. Just keep in mind that a hair salon, or any salon type place, is intended to provide their costumers with the most positive and enjoyable experience possible. That goes for the costumers with kids and the ones without kids sitting in there with you. The salon is not a babysitter. So if you have very hyper kids that could potentially run around the place and mistakenly bump into a costumer while they're getting a cut (YIKES!), that is frowned upon and they may discourage you from bringing a rowdy/rambunctious little one back in there. In my case, my 6yr old is mild manored and very helpful with his baby brother so they both stayed in one place quietly the entire time (about 2hrs or so) and never caused a problem. read more

Worth noting, I'm a man. New to the area and needed a barber. Based on the reviews from the site, I made an appointment for a haircut. Worst cut in 10 years. My neck looks like hamburger from the trimmer, I have bald spots over my ears, and the girl decided she would move one side of my hairline back an 1/8 inch. All while using the word "like" every 7 seconds. It was awful. Considering a crew cut in order to not look like an idiot for the next 2 weeks. Honestly if I could give this place less than one star I would. To start they don't have their prices listed anywhere in the salon and that's because when it's all said & done they're going to charge whatever they want. I was told a root touch up would be $80 even though on their website it says it's only $60. I was charged $40 for a haircut even though on their website it says they're only $35. I've had my clothes ruined twice now from bleach, the first time I called to speak with a manager about it I was hung up on & then when I spoke to the owner she told me she would knock 10% off of my next hair service but yet when I went to get my next service I was charged double what I was originally told and then they only knocked 10% off of the haircut which was not what me and the owner agreed on. The staff is rude and does not care about their clientele. BEWARE OF THIS SALON! read more

Treated with such disrespect because I had to bring my kids. I was belittled and told in an indirect way not to come back. I would encourage all mothers to not give them your business. Honestly, this doesn't even deserve one star. As a Bellus academy alumni and as a former stylist, your introduction and consultation is key. When I walked in the front desk was far from friendly. So after explaining that I had an appointment, I sat down to wait for the stylist. A woman(Erin) came from around the back, asked if I was ready and said come on back, I was taught to give a warm introduction so the client knows who you are, and feels welcome. Walking back to her station, I received nasty glares from other stylist, making me feel even more uncomfortable. I sat in her chair and proceeded to inform her that I was unsure of what I wanted to do but I needed a change. I had stated I wanted an ombre, but i understood the integrity of my hair and that it wouldn't obviously lift to a high level. I had mentioned doing highlights, and even staying dark with a new cut. She literally gave me the ugliest face and made me feel so small. Now I probably should have explained that I was a stylist so she didn't make me feel stupid or that I really didn't understand stylist lingo, but either way.. She was not willing to work with anything I had suggested. I told her they were not very friendly, she raised her voice and said she was very friendly with a slight eye roll. I could see other stylist and clients looking at me through the mirror and I felt the most uncomfortable I've ever felt. I told her that I would think about it more and left. I cried because I felt like I was disrespected. I was so excited to have a change after a terrible year, and this woman made me feel like I had made a mistake. I am a woman who works 7 days a week and this was my day off to get pampered so I went to an "upscale" salon who's website states they will relax, rejuvenate and refresh. That's a lie. I will not recommend this salon to anyone, and I will not return. If you do not want to work, go home. Do not treat new clients in such a manor. I received an upscale and professional level of service from another salon, from a stylist who was warm and inviting and who worked with me on what to do to give me a change and make me finally feel beautiful. read more

I went in to Style by Design, because of a recommendation from a friend. Maybe she had a different stylist than me, because my experience was horrible! Not only was the stylist incredibly snarky and rude, but she also butchered my hair! I have really curly hair, and I have had horrible experiences with people giving me bad haircuts in the past. I told her this, and I begged her to be careful. I asked for no more than a quarter of an inch off the bottom, and some layers to define my curls. What I've ended up with is a mess! The right side was trimmed an inch, and it's all the same length. The back is longer than the front and sides, and the left side is super short layers AND it is shorter than the right side. I'm so upset that I paid $60 to have my hair butchered by a rude and inconsiderate hair stylist! This will take months to grow out, and I'm probably going to have to pay to have it fixed! This is definitely NOT a place to go if you have curly hair!! read more
