Whoever took over management of this store is driving it straight into the ground. It used to be that this store was pleasant, you could go in and consign and look around while you wait. Now they have slowed it down to single file waiting for no reason. Someone has to go through your stuff while a line queues behind you, people are angry, the staff is frazzled, everything is in disarray and no one wants to look around it's get in and get out mentality. Because if this prices are dropping. What used to sell for decent spruces are plummeting because. Everyone's attitudes in there stink. The rules for when things can be sold are confusing, people show up only to be told to turn around, half the staff doesn't know anything and waits for the other half to answer basic questions. Today I went in to deliver the last half tote of my odd and ends. I waited for 90 minutes behind 2 people. The reason for my delay was because 1 guy didn't know how the system worked. Because of this he had to be walked through everything. Instead of allowing those of us who know what we are doing to proceed we had to wait until the clerk was done then allow us to step up, open our bins, the clerk to pull each item out, look at them and say, okay, put them in the tote. 90 minutes for 20 seconds or work... then I wanted to withdraw my money, this took 10 minutes because the clerk was immediately taken away from the counter for an emergency, while another clerk came up and promptly ignored everyone and started working on the *next* principal, completely ignoring the list that was in place. maybe this place would be better if they get a new manager. I know this is my last delivery of good here, from now on I'm going elsewhere. read more

There are some really rude staff here with bad attitudes towards families. They have signs up saying that kids are not allowed to play with the toys that are for sale. That is understandable, however some staff take that to mean that children cannot even pick them up to look at them or touch them at all. My daughter picked up a toy and then put it back after looking at it, which triggered a staff member to begin complaining and gossiping to another staff member about she had bad parents who aren't responsible for their kid. We were standing right there..... very rude and disrespectful for any situation, not to mention a place of business where there should be some sort of consideration and respect towards customers. Idk if this is passed down by management or just some certain employees' feelings. Similar interactions have happened in the past when an employee accused our child of wandering around alone even though I was right there and the employee just couldn't see me. It seems like a systemic problem. read more

I saw an item that was way overpriced, so I looked it up and found one for $50 (they wanted$70) granted, the one I found online was not open but had been owned, but the one at the store was in the same condition. I tried to get the price adjusted but they refused... I also saw a bike in terrible condition that they wanted $400 for, I know a lot about bikes, and this one was not worth a quarter of that... overall the staff is terrible and everything is overpriced. read more

Great spot to buy and sell used goods that range from essentially new to, you're seriously selling that? The prices range from excellent to a little on the pricey side for used goods, but overall, we've found a good of amount of usable stuff here. They've got things sectioned out nicely so most things are easy to find. The clearance section is located in the basement for those interested in giving items a home and they have a relatively nice selection of tables/chairs and household furniture if you're new to the area. You're probably saying to yourself, "this sounds like goodwill". It's similar with two major differences. 1) You don't get a tax write off for donations and 2) You get some of the money your items bring. If you bring items in and they decide to keep them you get up to 40% of the item's price if it sells within a week or two and generally 25% if it takes longer. You just call up and see how much you've made every few weeks and pick it up - sort of like a long term yardsale with more turnover! Definitely worth checking out if you're looking for items that don't need to be new. We've picked up tons of under-armor-esk shirts of biking as well as some random things like a wine rack, some DVDs and a few dresses and what not for my wife. Bottom line - better stuff than goodwill and you can make some money if you bring your stuff by and are willing to let someone else take the bulk of it. Great staff and a sweet little coffee shop as well. Additionally, they will often do things like give 20% off your purchase if you give money to their charity of the month. First off, I'm not a big "second hand" store person, but I live this place. I don't always buy a lot, but I've gotten some really good deals here, some even new with tags on it. It's a go to place for me for used books. They have a great selection of clothes, furniture, toys, almost everything, and I like that they take the time to arrange by sizes and type of clothing so you don't have to spend a lot if time going through the racks. read more

Stuff Etc. is an incredibly well maintained consignment/thrift store. I've been here three times in the last week (Once after a doctor's appointment, once to pick up the scarf I left the first time I came, and once to pick up an item I bid on and won, and if I'd known I was going to win it I probably wouldn't have come the second time, but then I would have missed out on an amazing vintage Avon cologne bottle), and each time it was like visiting an entirely new store. The inventory at Stuff Etc. is constantly rotating, and it's all in good shape. They have several very well-defined sections. My favorites are the antiques and the kitchen areas; there are real treasures to be found. The glass case near the door almost always has merchandise worth bidding on. I also like how particularly interesting items that aren't quite case-worthy are placed in the front near the case for customer inspection. I've gotten a few choice items this way. Stuff Etc. is one of the reasons why I love visiting Iowa City regularly. Every time I go, I'm sure to find something awesome! read more

I've been a consignor and a customer for years. As far as buying things here, I feel it's average for your typical resale store, maybe a little below average actually for this area, as there are much better resale options in Iowa City if you're looking for strictly clothes. For selling, however, it's terrible. You can show up 10-15 min before they open with your tote, and there's already a line. Only 3 people can drop off their stuff at the counter at one time. Every single time I've been there, most of the people dropping off have jumbled boxes or garbage bags full of stuff and spend 10 min or longer laboriously trying to jam as much stuff as they can into a tote. Most of the time after standing there forever waiting your turn, they run out of totes. Even if your tote gets in, the last 4 times I've managed to drop one off, it didn't get processed for 4-6 weeks. I can't believe they can't come up with a better process for this. read more

Pretty decent for a second hand store. I enjoy taking donations here and making money off of them. I appreciate the cafe. They have a small section for high end things, and I like that. Staff is always helpful. I got a writers desk for $20 and I enjoy it a lot (it's not in perfect condition but works well enough). However, I can't give 5 stars because I have found multiple items I wanted to buy, yet they were not in good condition (examples: broken picture frames and art, holes in shirts, the occasional missing part). read more

Beware of what you buy! Every sale is a final sale, and if you happen to buy something that does not work or immediately falls apart, the store does not care. They do not check items for completeness, accuracy of description, or working condition. If you have a non- working item that you don't want, just take it to them and tell them it works, and they will take it and put it out for sale. They say they trust what people tell them, but when confronted with the sale of what turns out to be junk, they are completely cold and indifferent, All that seems to matter is getting your money, and the ethics of their practices are on the sleezy side. read more

OMG, I have missed my favorite consignment chain in the world. We love the Coralville location, although traffic has gotten worse because of the buildup of stores. We do like the roundabout. We needed winter clothing, athletic shoes and other clothing items for my college-bound daughter. We found everything we needed at affordable prices and more. The store is well-organized so the large size is never overwhelming. They also make consigning easy. I even managed to walk out with a lovely scarf for $4 and a sweater for $5. If you love to read Stuff etc. in Coralville has one of the best selection of books I've seen anywhere at a thrift store in the area. They are in alphabetical order and sorted by genre. They just recently added a hundred or so westerns as well as Love Inspired both romance and suspense. this is just a small amount of the different kinds of books available all in good condition. While you are there enjoy the other great lines of merchandise some new with tags and all in great condition. read more

I was in stuff excetera yesterday Sunday afternoon with my wife and son. We purchased a few things hats and and a pair of pants for my kid. My son spent his last $10 at the Coralville stuff and bought a video game, which appeared to be in great condition. When he got it home and try to download it onto his Xbox it would not work, we did try wiping it off and redoing it. Unfortunately the disc would not read. We called stuff excetera to let them know what happened and the customer service representative told us they have no return policy on video games. There is nothing in the storied letting you know this, not even an Xbox system in the store to make sure it worked. But they're selling things and not testing them. This is very unfortunate and very unprofessional, to take something into your store sell it and not know if it properly work. read more

I bought 2 nice pieces of antique furniture, 2 name brand sweaters, and over a dozen house and decor items for 100.95$ and I'm a beyond pleased with each purchase and find! There were at least 3 other major furniture pieces I would have purchased had I not been traveling between NC and Montana. I can't wait to visit other locations! read more

I almost feel like I am betraying myself by writing a review for this store, but share the joy! This is the best Stuff Etc. in my opinion. It's location makes it handy to just stop by and browse on the way home instead of sitting in Iowa City traffic (har-de-har-har). Their basement holds the various arrays of furnishings, and some clothes as well. I always make a bee-line straight to the downstairs to check out what curiosities they have. I have seen everything from a incredibly horrifying black vintage baby stroller perfect for the Tim Burton set, to beautiful hope chests heartlessly destroyed by coffee mug rings. Their selection of entertainment centers and book cases make chain store furniture stores look just plain capitalistic. While there is row after row of desks, book cases, and entertainment centers, the staff does try to one-up Ikea by creating living room scenarios with the furniture they have available. My husband and myself have scored many an awesome thing when they have their 50% off sales. If you fancy an item but are on the fence about it, check back in a few weeks to see if the item is still there, and if they have marked it down. I have seen some items go down in price considerably, also taking in to account that the item was cheap to begin with. Like all Iowans that I have come across, the staff there is more than enthused to help you load your vehicle with your massive purchase. Please forgive me my trespasses, because I have tried to negotiate a lower price with an employee, and they simply won't do it. Back home, I was able to haggle Salvation Army employees for a better price. Since the money goes to a deserving charity, an Iowan who consigned the piece, the company that offers me half-an-hours worth of entertainment, and a friendly employee with muscle, I have no beef. Once again, this pains me to inform you of what a jewel of a place this is, so don't make me tackle you if you snatch up the item that I wanted!!!! :-) read more

She was very kind and understanding and stated her disapproval of the situation even though she did not feel well she returned my call, I hope she feels better over the weekend. Their items are usually over-priced. Don't expect to walk in and find "bargains." This is the Nieman Marcus of Goodwill shopping! Bottom line: Just "A-ok." No major gripes. I am both a purchaser and a consigner from the Coralville location. I've had good experiences with my purchases, but have had poor experiences with consigning. On two occasions, items I have consigned turned up "missing" and I had to go back and forth with the manager to determine what happened. Both times I was given a lame excuse and the first time they clearly lied. I believe they have a thief working for them and have needed to cover this fact because the two items that turned up missing (i.e. they vanished before being itemized) were the only two items that I have consigned that were in brand new condition or still had the price tags on them. Anyway, my hubby and I are going to close our account and try our luck with the Iowa City location. They need to have better accountability for their employees. It's not a good feeling as a consigner to leave items with them and have to cross your fingers that those items make it to a shelf for sale or back in your possession. If I wanted someone to "have" my items without getting something in return for them I would just take them to Goodwill. Not cool, Stuff, Etc. Not cool at all. read more

Beware if you are consigning. I dropped off three items and went in to collect the money after I had called and heard that they sold the items. When I got in there they told me my items hadn't sold because they had looked at the wrong account. After looking up my account they stated that I would have to come back after the manager had time to research the items. So I went back later when the manager stated the one item was dirty and couldn't be sold. My question is what happened to the other two items. The item they were talking about was Nike baseball cleats which were worn twice and cleaned after wearing. They stated that they were full of mud and dirt and couldn't be sold. What about the other items I brought in has never been disclosed. I have told everyone I know not to consign with them because they either lost my items or put them on someone else's account. read more
