My man Josh has been cutting my hair for over 5 years now. Every time I go in I swear he makes each haircut better than the last. He takes his time and is a true artisan of his trade. I drive usually 45 minutes to see Josh because he does such a stellar job. His attention to detail is unparalleled. Cindy is the SWEETEST! Not only is she fun, cute, personable, and good at what she does, she's also very reliable and will accomodate your crazy requests! I notified her on a Wednesday asking for her availability the next night. I was surprised when she told me that she will make time for me! I asked for an ombre and a hair cut + bangs and she gave me the quote ($138) which isn't that bad given her expertise and skills. The appointment took about 4 hours, and during the whole time, she never rushed what she was doing and would even add more suggestions. She stayed well beyond closing time, and even then, she didn't make me feel as though I was intruding since I had such a late appointment. I usually feel that way when the appointment goes later than it should, but she didn't make me feel bad at all! This review is for Josh. I was recommended by my brother who is close with the owner of the salon. For all my life I've been going to those $10-$20 haircut places you'd find in the southeast of San Diego. Really nothing special if you just want fades, undercuts, etc. You get what you pay for; you come in and wait for your cheap haircut, tell them what you want, get your cheap cut, then leave. However, with Josh and at Studio NN, you pay a little more for a lot more bang for the buck. Spending around $30 just for mens haircut seems ridiculous at first, but Josh thoroughly studied my hair (my hair is super thick and needs to get thinned, which cheap barbers don't even do), spent a good 15 minutes discussing with me what I want with my hair and what is and can be achievable. He's an easy going guy to get along with, and collaborates with you to achieve the hair you want and more. He knows his craft and does it well, as well as providing fair prices. The experience beginning to end is well worth the price. From being offered beer or wine, to discussing hair, getting the haircut, getting hair washed with premium shampoo, and massage; he's the best barber I've ever had. He knows the ins and outs of mens hair and has been doing it since he was a teenager. He's also now trying to learn more salon stuff like hair coloring, so he's improving more and more everyday. He also has an appointment system on StyleSeat which makes things so much easier and convenient. I hated having to wait 1 - 3 hours at barber shop down south, or try to make an appointment in advance via phone only to be difficult with my work schedule. Using StyleSeat to schedule an appointment makes things easier for me and my work schedule, as well as Joshs. He drives from one end of San Diego to the salon to offer his trade, and I'll gladly drive from the other end of San Diego to get my hair done by him. On a side note, to the people who have negatively reviewed Nancy, I think you shouldn't jump to conclusions. For one, it isn't easy being a business owner, and also isn't easy being well known that many people want to book with her or have booked with her. I found Matt on Yelp when I moved to San Diego in 2013. He is a fantastic stylist who listens to his clients. His coloring is on point, I was always very satisfied with his highlights! One time I told him I was hoping they would be brighter and he had me come in a week later to get them to the right tone and kept the charges minimal. Matt goes above and beyond to ensure his clients are happy with their hair. He cut and colored my hair for two years (I just moved out of state). Last year I opted to try the "lob" that was popular. He made it look great but was able to do so without making me commit to the style long term. I was able to grow it out a few months later and my hair still looked good! I first went to Nancy when I decided that I was tired of my frizzy head of curls and wanted something slightly sleeker, but wavy. I did a LOT of research on the Brazilian Blowout, and finally decided to see her. Along with my BB, I also got my hair colored to cover up the grays that have been popping out lately. Nancy told me that it was actually good to combine the two services, because the BB sealed in the color and made it last longer. Bonus! There are other salons that perform this service, but honestly Nancy did such an incredible job that I highly recommend her. Since then I've changed my hairstyle so many times - from straight to wavy back to curly, long to medium to short and back to long - and she shows my hair who's boss each time. My little girl even loves getting her hair cut by Nancy and insists that I don't DARE cut her hair myself! Before I start boasting about my wonderfully talented hair stylist that works here at Studio NN, I just want to say a few things about the actual salon. To start off, Studio NN is located in one of my FAVORITE locations in San Diego...Bankers Hill, right by Balboa Park. If you arrive to your appointment early, I suggest taking a nice walk to the Starbucks not too far from the salon, such a pretty area. It is nice that there are parking spots for salon clients as well. As you walk up the stairs and in the salon, you get such a nice homey feel. Sure, big fancy salons are neat looking and trendy, but this salon is the perfect size and just seems like you can be so personable with everyone, like you are at home in your living room...in a salon chair getting your hair done ;) ... I am from the midwest, so I was thrilled to walk in to such a delightful little salon, as it reminded me of the salons back home. The interior decorating is done very nicely, props to whomever did the decorating and design. Not only is just the salon itself wonderful, but it is full of talent with some amazing hair stylists, nail tech, threader, and why not get a spray tan while you are in too! My main stylist squeeze would be Cindy Thongrivong. She is one of the best of the best of her art of hair, and I will never go to another hair stylist while I am living in San Diego. I am always very happy with my hair after cindy does her magic, and I am constantly having an entertaining time while I am the salon chair chatting with Cindy while she preps my hair to turn into something beautiful. I ask for something different almost every time I go into the salon, so I love when that can be achieved, and to what I expected it to be. I've been straightening my hair, fighting it's natural curl for over 11 years now, and have been seeing Nancy for the past 3 or so. We went with a classic bob with an asymmetrical twist for a while, which she really nails since she is so obsessive about the details. I made an appointment with Cindy on a Tuesday at 12:15 through styleseat.com. Studio NN is a little tricky to find, because it looks like a cute little house and not so much a hair salon. As soon as I walked in, Cindy was there to greet me. She offered me a beverage and asked me what I'd like done to my hair. I showed her a few pictures and asked her for her opinion. She was so confident to get started and I could tell she knew exactly what she was doing. It was such a relief, because I was initially very nervous to get my hair done, but she made me feel so at ease. When it came to the coloring process, she did what is called a "balayage". She explained that she was going to paint my hair for a more natural look and that is exactly what she did! Let me tell you, she did not take her eyes or focus off of my hair for the next 2.5 hours. She took her time making sure that everything was perfect. While she was doing my hair, she talked to me about everything. She is just a really cool chick and fun to talk to. She then washed my hair and deep conditioned it for me. She gave me her recommendations as to what products I should use to maintain the color of my hair. My hair felt amazing!!! She then blow dried my hair and styled it. The entire process took 4 hours and she did an excellent job. I could not be more happy with her service! Not only was she amazing during the appointment, but she sent me a "thank you" text and answered any question I had in regards to the products I should get. I am 110% satisfied! I must admit i was hesitant to leave my current stylist at the time but after just one visit to Nancy i immediately regretted not making the switch sooner. This girl knows her stuff. THE BEST. yes. Nancy IS the best hairstylist, artist, master of hair in the world. She always knows what I want when I walk through the doors... layers and VOLUME. lots of it. My hair is very straight, long, and flat. I have tons of it too. She knows how to handle it and make it feel lighter AND look sexy with tons of volume. Past hairstylists have left my hair feeling extra heavy with chunky layers... I think the texture and amount of my hair is just really hard to handle so Nancy is VERY special and amazing for being able to work with it. I made my first appointment with Cindy and booked almost 4 months in advance! It's totally worth the wait and the price that you pay. I've been riddled with unfortunate hairstylist luck until I came to this studio! Cindy has an expert level of understanding when it comes to hair coloring. She simply won't take shortcuts to make it easier on herself. I had seen multiple hairstylists who didn't do such a great job coloring my hair, but Cindy understood exactly what I wanted and explained the process as she worked. She's fast and efficient, and I've never seen someone work at her pace even though I have experience as a receptionist at a hair salon. The studio is a quaint little placed tucked away near Banker's Hill. If you come before 6pm (except on Sundays), expect to pay the meter for parking. You can find free parking closer to balboa park and the bridge that overlooks the freeway but it may be a bit of a walk. I believe that Cindy mentioned Studio NN had their own private lot too (I must have missed it on my way in). For all intents and purposes, Cindy can take care of all your hair needs. I started seeing Nancy back in 2010 or 2011 and I have been a loyal customer ever since. PREVIOUS SALON EXPERIENCE My hair is thin, fine, brown and long. I've tried the range of hairstylists from inexpensive Fantastic Sams to medium price to super fancy expensive A Robert Cromean Salon. With all of my past haircuts and color, none of my friends or family noticed. I thought it was just because my hair was hopeless. HAIR AFTER NANCY After seeing Nancy, I get compliments on my hair color from friends, family and even co-workers. Even male co-workers ha! I was so excited to finally have people notice. People would even ask for her business card because they liked my hair so much. Nancy has given me some basic hair tips throughout the years that have really improved the health of my hair. ABOUT NANCY Scheduling an appointment with Nancy is super easy and is like making plans to see a girlfriend. I genuinely look forward to spending time with her. She loves what she does and it shows in her dedication to her business and to her hairstylists that work in her salon. She's super open and could probably have a side gig as a life coach. After being disappointed by other hair stylists in the past, I was reluctant to try another. When I saw a review of Cindy's earlier in the year with pictures of her work I knew I had to see what she could do for my hair. I made an appointment on her styleseat page and came in to see her that same week for a cut/color/style. I had a few colors I wanted to choose from and Cindy picked the one that suited me best. When she was done with my hair I was amazed! Every time I leave Cindy's people always compliment me on my hair. I've gone back to her ever since and when my daughter is ready for a haircut I will be bringing her in to see Cindy as well. She's also taught me about which products I should stop using on my hair and which I should start using. Made a big difference in how my hair feels and looks on a day to day basis. Apart from getting my hair done by Cindy I've also tried air brush tanning for the first time and it came out great with a nice even shade (not orange like other salons). Cindy's awesome at what she does and would recommend her to anyone! Not only did I find a great hair stylist but she makes you feel like you've been long time friends, unlike some where they just ask you a few questions about your hair and are silent the whole time ( that tends to be awkward for me). I've been a longtime customer of Brittany's - maybe about 6- 7 years now. When you find a stylist (therapist/friend/confidant) that you can trust, YOU NEVER LEAVE THEM! Sadly, my main stylist Brittany is on maternity leave and she referred me to Matt in her salon. I was hesitant to have someone new (to me) cut and color my hair, yet to my surprise, Matt styled my hair yesterday and I LOVE IT! I entered the salon like I was a first-time customer, a little shy and unsure of who Matt was. He greeted me with a smile and by name. He asked me to take a seat in their lounge and help myself to any drinks (water, coffee, tea, soda, beer, wine). After a short wait, Matt came and got me and directed me to his chair. We discussed what I wanted and didn't want, looked at some pictures and...we were off! Matt made me feel at ease and squashed any nervousness I was feeling. The conversation flowed effortlessly. So much so, that I didn't realize how long I had been there! Matt really took his time and covered all my gray hairs (welp) and balayaged (?) some caramel/walnut peek-a-boos throughout my head. His coloring skills are grade A. His hair-cutting skills are top notch! He cut and razored some length from my hair and was able to thin it out. All in all, I am a very satisfied customer!! I had my consultation with Nancy. The place was empty. It took approximately 3 months to get a consultation an 4 months to make an actual hair appointment. My hair had color and I was looking for a different color. The process takes time and my hair required a month rest after the first treatment but there were no appointment until 4 month later meanwhile you're left with horrible hair in between. Not to mention the first appointment to remove the previous hair color ($350) Second appointment to apply hair color 4 MONTHS LATER ($250). Prices are ridiculous for the quality of service you receive -plus any addition time or if needed more treatment Not worth the wait or the money Oh and there's no parking. Meter parking is 2 hours limit and the majority of the hair appointments required 2+ hours I wouldn't come here again and I do not recommend this place read more

Brittany is incredible! I love playing with color in my hair so I had a great feeling about her the moment I saw her long, shiny dark red hair that looks amazing on her! As much as I love hair color, I do not enjoy styling my hair - I'm queen of the ponytail. I would style my hair more but after 34 years, I still don't know how to do it well. Regardless of my styling skills, Brittany still makes it more fun for me to 'rock my ponytail' by adding my requested shades of red, brown and blonde in a fun pattern that shows off my color personality. I highly recommend Brittany! In addition to being a great hair stylist, she's a great person to spend time with when getting your hair done. The salon is very relaxed and comfortable. The owner, Nancy, is always friendly and welcoming too. Setting an appointment and getting there are very convenient.
