I decided to upcycle some beautiful old frames and move some art & photos into some lovely frames that my mom already had. I called the owner Donna, she was quite lovely and suggested that I come in at 10 the next day. I needed the frames done quickly, Donna told me that she could get them done within 24 hours. Seeing that Donna had a great eye, I let her choose the mats and she completed everything quickly and beautifully! I'm so grateful for her prompt and beautiful service. While in Mystic, my friend and I stopped by the Trade Winds Gallery. This is a very small store…read morewhere they sell artwork, antique maps and frames. This really isn't a gallery, the art peices are randomly placed all over the store. Some are a bit difficult to get a full view of because others are blocking it. My friend found an original 1917 map of West Hartford, the same area where his company's office is located. This was a large map at approximately 30 by 40 inches. It was in excellent shape. Despite it's age, nothing had been fading, all of the words were still legible. It came with a protective cover, covering each edge and corner, the front and back. It was $250. My friend is very happy with his new art piece. He talked to Brian the owner of Trade Winds Gallery for a while. He was very personable and knowledgeable about the maps and the artwork in his store. We aren't a religious family but we do like history and that's not something you see everyday! There were four of us and we made a day of it as some UrbEx kids version. The drive to Mystic for us is about an hour and a half. Weather was perfect! You have to go thru Mystic, then Mason's Island then over a skinny bridge to get to Ender's. It's very well kept and run by the Catholic Church as a recovery program and retreat. But you can visit as a day trip. Lots of flower gardens, statues of Mary, a scenic view of the ocean. The Seaside Chapel is literally next to the water; we were wondering how it can be so close and not flood. The hand is in a glass case inside of the church that they use for Mass. It tells St.Edmund's story and has some trinkets in a case under the hand. I THINK they were from other Saints, like a special belonging. There are several picnic tables around the little island and we had come prepared. We brought out our food, sat seaside, and enjoyed a delightful lunch with the kids. It wasn't crowded and no one was loud, which was a nice change. I didn't take a lot of pics out of respect but here are a few. I would recommend it if you're interested in doing a little exploring.

Maybe I built it up in my head too much, as I had never even heard of it until a video came up on my fb feed. That said, getting there is a little tricky. There is a guard/checkpoint you have to pass through. The first time I didn't know that and wasn't expecting it and turned around. Today I when I came the checkpoint was unmanned. Apparently if you tell them you're going to enders they'll let you through, but I've heard of people getting turned away.

I immediately noticed a newfoundland safety rescue presentation and couldn't miss it. There were at least 10 dogs set up for various rescue scenes. It was interactive for children and a sight for dog lovers. Pets and slobber came free. The village experience was interesting, the ship tour and interactive chant/rope pull was also fun to watch. Food was delectable even if water just couldn't stay cold in the heat. We missed the boat ride by a couple minutes so caught the newfoundland show again (not the least bit mad). I'm a little old for a late night Lego movie, but the set up would be perfect for children! I can't wait to go back with the younger kids in our family.

While the ticket prices are steep, everything is preserved amazingly well. We spent two hours there and could have definitely spent more if it wasn't so humid. Arisu Anime is a fun store at Olde Mystic Village in Mystic, CT. The Totoro figurine outside…read moreimmediately caught my attention and when I walked in, there were life sized figurines of Naruto, Monkey D. Luffy, and Goku. There is a collection of anime, manga, origami kits, cloths, blind boxes, houseware, kitchenware, art and posters, figures, DIY kits, Funko pops, gatcha machines, and a plethora of other Japanese treasures. On the right of the store next to the outside deck with tables, there is a Japanese food market with authentic imported pre-packed Japanese foods like instant ramen, different kinds of Japanese noodles, Japanese grocery items, snacks and chips, sweets and candy and ice cream, Japanese drinks and anime theme drinks. By the registers, there are free arcade games to play. I took my time walking through the store and looking at everything. It could be overwhelming at first. I really liked looking at the Sanrio, The Studio Ghibli Collection, and Pokemon items. I learned after that Arisu means "Alice" in Japanese and it's a tribute to their first store "Alice in the Village" which is also located in Olde Mystic Village. If you're in Olde Mystic Village, definitely stop by and take a look at Arisu Anime and Alice in the Village.

I did notice that some stuff, like the Hello Kitty ramen I usually get at Target, was more expensive here, but honestly, the variety, the atmosphere, and how nice the staff is make it worth stopping by. We'll definitely be back, and I'll probably end up buying even more stuff next time.
