Having no experience with recording, and after doing a bit of shopping around the city, I decided to go here since it's close to home and had such good reviews on Yelp and on the web site. The engineer, Jared, was patient, friendly, professional and kind, and did great work on the editing. I'm happy with the end product. It ran way over my budget in the end, and they wouldn't negotiate much on the hourly rate, even though I was clear about how much I had to spend up front. They took a little off the final hours billing, but not much. Their position was, "well, you should have negotiated that up front, not now when we're done." True I suppose, but not the most friendly negotiating tactic for a first-time customer. So at the end of the project I left feeling a bit ripped off and won't be going back for the rest of the work I have to do (more books, workshop edits and other recordings). I'll find a place that is willing to work with me at a more competitive rate for simple voice recordings. My fault for not being more of a hard ass up front and being too trusting. Lesson learned. Bottom line: Probably a good place for music and bigger productions, with big budgets, but over priced and inflexible for audio books and simple voice overs, especially for newbies.

For example, agreeing to mix & master a song for me and then not having the required plug ins or even pro tools on their laptop to do so... thus not sending me revisions as requested in time for my drop date , or ever. I shoot video for a living I have 100 terabytes of data audio files are very small compared to 4K-8K footage I also RJ a commercial recording studio and I still have files for artist who have went to prison or lost touch 15 years later also other artist have passed away and I'm still able to give their kids and family files all these years later! Imagine if they erased all the famous artist sessions because you have so many clients this would make me not want to use the studio if was a artist and also your engineer did not disclose this I had no hard drive at the time and did not expect the engineer to quit or be fired

Most of the time we record at a studio in Massachusetts, since that's where the drummer lives and I used to make it back east every year. But the past year or so haven't been able to go back, so when the drummer came out here, I decided to look for a local studio. Although I have lived in California for over four years now, I never thought to look for a studio here - I was really surprised how many there are! Yelp helped me sort through them, and Robot Envy looked like the one most suited to my needs. I was not disappointed! Sammy was great, he was open to what we wanted to do, which is basically improvise live in the studio. He got us set up with a minimum of hassle, and we were recording within an hour or so. It helped that he has a great sounding drumset, which my drummer loved. We recorded a lot of material which I have been sifting through - the stuff we recorded sounds great! Sometimes engineers can be intimidating (if not outright jerks), but I felt comfortable asking for what I wanted or making suggestions. In summary, comfortable atmosphere, good location, great sounds. Highly recommended!

In an age where everyone has a home recording studio, Ice House reminds us the difference between…read morean amateur sounding recording and one that is ready for the radio. After an exhaustive search for a great studio to create my first full length, I came across producer/engineer Joey Muller and Ice House, and it was probably the easiest and best decision I made. We spent several months making a great sounding record ... and despite the great studio, everyone knows it's really the person behind the gear that all makes it come together. Anyway, the highlights of the experience really need a bullet point list: - The live room sounds incredible. Drums and guitar were flat out amazing. - The gear at the studio is great - a very quiet chain using great preamps, converters, and other outboard gear. - Joey was extremely passionate and into the project, very responsible, and easy to work with. - Joey's musical talents and ear are amazing. Besides being a great piano player, his ear for pitch, melody, and song structure is very finely tuned. - The resources near the studio are expansive; there is a large music store within walking distance, as well as great healthy places to eat. - The network of professional musicians to help out on projects is huge; Joey knows many of the top musicians in the Bay Area, and they all love coming in and working at Ice House. Needless to say, if you want to make a great recording, this is the place to go. And it's actually quite reasonably priced as well. What more could you ask for?

The ownership is wonderful, our engineer is brilliant and intuitive, the climate and comfort levels are exactly what I need (I have multiple sclerosis and a room with climate control is vital if I'm doing eight-hour days), and the tech is as fantastic as the rates. Laid down vocals and 12-string guitar for a folky track. Danny B. the engineer I worked with was incredible - really flexible and meticulous with understanding my vision and making it happen. Did a three-mic setup for the guitar - and it sounds INCREDIBLE. Highly recommend for recording anything from simple folky acoustic all the way up to full band and everywhere in between. This place is straight up legit and captured my music in a way I'm not sure other studios could have. Again highly recommend working with Danny if you can. Prices are also pretty reasonable - will def be recording more here when I get the chance.

He's a fun and professional to collaborate with, and I'm beyond happy with how my song sounds as a finished product. I've been producing on Ableton for a few years, and I was specifically looking to work with someone in studio to learn and improve my mixes in general. I spent a few hours with Chris in his Oakland studio and learned so much during that time. It was one of the most informative sessions I've had since I started making music! Chris shared numerous different techniques and workflow tips with me while making suggestions and helping refine my track. It's clear that he's an expert in Ableton, but is also generous in sharing his knowledge. After our in-person session, we collaborated for another week or so via phone/e-mail through the mastering process. Throughout this process, he was thorough, patient, and gave invaluable feedback and recommendations - all while communicating effectively. Something I really appreciate about working with Chris is that he makes suggestions and gives honest feedback, but also makes sure that he respects the original vision for what the track should sound like. He makes suggestions but never pushes or makes it feel like you're straying or altering your original track. I look forward to working with Chris again! Highly recommend Mothership Studio.
