When first looking for a place to do some voice over sessions for an animated short, we completely in the dark about what to do or what the process would be like. Priscilla made it super easy to book the session, as well as working with our budget and timing. James, our sound engineer, not only gave us tips and pointers about what was going on, but also for how to approach editing the work we recorded. We went on a Sunday, so parking was free. During the weekday, there is a two hour limit per spot. The studio itself is part of a house, which I can see why famous artists would want to record there (away from city hustle and bustle). There is wifi (password protected) in the studios, so you can access documents, etc on your phone/password. Cellular service is a bit spotty (Verizon), so was saved when trying to look up our script. Definitely will book for the future! read more

Our experience recording here was one of the best we have had. The engineer is very attentive and really cares about getting the song to sound the way you want it. His expertise comes handy when you aren't able to deliver because he gives advice and guides you so you can get there. We are very pleased with the service, equipment, professionalism, and ambiance of the studio. The studio is located in a beautiful neighborhood and is actually in the back part of a house but don't worry, it is fully soundproof and once inside, you forget you're in a house. It was pouring rain the evening we went and the quality of the vocals was superb regardless of massive rain pouring outside. I recorded my album, ColorBook, at Live Oak Studio. Since that time, I have recorded many other commercial and personal projects at Live Oak, and I have also performed there many times as a sideman or arranger on other client's projects. We recorded the voice-over narration for an educational film today there. I used them several years ago, too, and James is still there. Located in the wing of a private home in the Berkeley Hills, this is a professional studio, with complete soundproofing, high, high end microphones, digital recording capability and gold records on the walls. My two clients and I were able to communicate with our narrator using their talkback system as well as visually through the window to the studio. James loaded our files onto my drive, and he created a backup at their studio. The sound quality is superb. James even recorded some room tone so we can smooth over pauses. read more

A wonderful studio and place to record an audiobook. I recorded my memoir Double Happiness at Live Oak, and I am extremely happy that I did. There are of course cheaper options in today's wild west DIY era; you could hire a tech with a mic to come to your house and have at it. But suffice it to say, being in a professional environment with a professional tech like James Ward makes all the difference in the world if you want to produce a high quality product. James Ward has done many audiobooks, and it shows immediately -- he knows just how to get the best voice work out of you -- and he knows the latest ACX and Audible/iTunes spec backwards and forwards. He knew exactly how to set up the studio, how to record and punch-in, and even how to get me positioned in front of the mic. If I had the slightest of critiques here, it would be that James is SO knowledgeable and enthusiastic to create excellent work, he'll sometimes talk and tell you more than you really need to know. But consider the alternative -- working with someone or some studio doing their first audiobook -- and you'll know you're in the right place. And a beautiful place it is. The location is gorgeous and peaceful -- up in the Berkeley hills. You arrive there and get the feeling upon walking into the studio that you're going to do great work. They were also extremely helpful and flexible about scheduling, and were all around great to work with. Needless to say, they delivered flawless files that now enable people to hear and enjoy the story of Double Happiness however and wherever they want. read more

We just finished tracking 13 songs there and the room, microphones and pre-amps are all top notch. James Ward is an amazing engineer, and he easily handled the musicians and instruments I threw at him--horns, strings, tabla, pedal steel, and even a choir! I just finished recording my first audiobook at Live Oak Studio. James was my sound engineer. I couldn't be happier. As a first time author who is NOT professional "voice talent," I was pretty intimidated by the prospect of recording a 90,000 word book, but my book is a memoir and I couldn't imagine having anyone else read it. James was very organized and professional. He gave me guidance on how to prepare (hydrate the day before, bring lots of green apples, etc.), and generally what to expect from the whole process. He estimated it would take 5 sessions (it did) and let me know ahead of time that the first session is the hardest (it was). He warned me not to get discouraged. Throughout, James was great about giving direction without making me feel bad, and working with me to push through longer sessions when I was in the flow, or end them early when I wasn't. As other reviewers have mentioned, the studio is very professional, quiet, and fully equipped. The sound quality of the final book is better than I could possibly hope for. You can hear for yourself--listen to the sample provided on Audible (it will be up in Sept. 2013). Book title is "Maxed Out: American Moms on the Brink." If I ever do another audiobook, I would definitely work with Live Oak and James again. read more

I spent over 20 hours this passed week at Live Oak recording a very dense project-- dubbing a video into Spanish. James (engineer) did some amazing guerrilla editing that saved me hundreds of dollars in what would have otherwise been 20-30 hours of editing time. This music studio is stunningly beautiful -- inside and out. I come from a family of musicians, and after seeing the location, technology and acoustics, I couldn't wait to get my sister (especially) out to see Live Oak on her next West Coast swing. I kept thinking how perfect a place this would be for her and her rock band to record their album. It's really worth visiting (and recording). For the record, I first learned of Live Oak because its owner, the incredibly nice Priscilla, has been a member of the same networking group as me for a couple of years. I've never recorded anything in my life but I had a fantastic experience at Live Oak Studio today. I'm doing a secret project for somebody's birthday and I had 8 songs that I wanted to sing. I've been singing for awhile but I've never been in a recording studio before and I was incredibly nervous. Once I got there, the time passed quickly and james quickly made me more relaxed because of how nice and accommodating he was. I'm really pleased with the recordings that came out of our session, the price was very reasonable and I had a great time. I don't know that I'll need to do something like this again anytime soon but I'm already letting some of my friends in bands know about the space. read more
