This is where I began my fitness journey! They offered plenty of classes, including Zumba, my first-love at the gym :)

You could relax and really focus on the workout. This new joint is a DUMP. Basically a micro-sized prison yard. PF didn't even bother to tell us it was moving, either - all the emails in the world, but nothing about this. CH has a ton of members in comparison to spots out in Western NC with far fewer people and far less traffic (Lenoir, Hickory, Newton, Wilkesboro, etc.). This place is just as small as those locations, but way more compressed and far less inviting. It feels "cheap," and while PF has always been affordable, it's never felt cheap, nor uninviting. The space doesn't make sense, either. Every machine ever built is stacked out front, crammed in on top of one another, with very little room for movement. It was chaotic, even though people were behaving and trying to do their thing. While I long ago copped out of "prime time" hours at PF, this place is so small that you'd think it was a clown car built for people who own multiple leggings. In the back there's not only an odd mezzanine with little in it (and stairs, for those of you with mobility issues), but also a huge "functional fitness" space that is wide open in comparison. Did PF not hire a planner and just "whooshed" over to a competitor's former spot? Parking isn't just more difficult than it used to be, but also uncomfortable. This location is in an obnoxiously busy area. The lot is poorly-designed, cramped, and **DARK.** Have your flashlight out... and you'll need one if you don't want to exercise with every high school student in Orange county next to you at 4 pm. (Nothing against them, btw, but it's been a thing at CHPF, and it's gonna be much more noticeable here.) Honestly, I delayed going because I suspected it would be awful. When I finally went in though? I actually felt depressed, like I was working out on a movie set designer's idea of a gym in a 1980's comedy. The vibes of the actual place -- not the staff or anybody else -- read "finish and leave, ASAP." I cannot overstate my disappointment.

In Chapel Hill, "The Farm" refers to the private club of the UNC Faculty-Staff Recreation…read moreAssociation. It's kind of like a country club, but without a golf course. There are tennis courts, pickleball courts, swimming and diving pools, outdoor rock climbing walls, a gym, an outdoor basketball court, disc golf, beach volleyball, a clubhouse, playground, three shelters (pavilions) with wooden tables and benches, and more. Actually, it's more like a private park than a private country club. In terms of how nice The Farm is, I'd say it's on a public park level. When I saw The Farm is private, I was thinking it would be nicer and perhaps higher-end. Instead, it felt more like a small city park that happens to be private. My wife has been here multiple times for various UNC events. I attended one of the events with her. It took place at The Farm's clubhouse, the adjacent pavilion, and the playground. It was a family-friendly event. Parents brought their children who played on the playground. Food and drink were set up inside the clubhouse's kitchen. The clubhouse and overall grounds and facilities that I saw were modest. The shelter had string lighting lining the ceiling. The tables had a lot of what looked like dried-up paint/finger paint on them, presumably from kids' activities. It makes sense since the playground was right next to us. Also nearby was a bunch of bamboo which made for a good backdrop for group photos. During our Saturday afternoon visit, I saw people playing beach volleyball and the pool(s) looked busy. The Farm is located east of UNC campus, not far from the Chapel Hill-Durham border. It's off 54, accessible via Barbee Chapel Rd, just past UNC Finley Golf Course. It's due south from the Rizzo Center (south side of 54).

I really like how the class is structured with 20 minutes of spin, 20 minutes of strength training, and 20 minutes of yoga. The spin portion is motivating with good music and your name shows up on a screen with your optimal power zone so you can continuously push yourself. No one knows who is who unless you know someone's name ;) And everyone's is different to cater towards your level! Since it's only 20 minutes not many people wear clip in shoes - but you can! The strength training portion is always different. Sometimes it's weights, straps, or even slam balls. I really like that the exercises are also shown on screens throughout the strength training area - so you won't forget what you need to do right after the instructor goes through everything. It also gives the countdowns so you know how much time is left for each exercise. The yoga is the part that's a little hit or miss for me. Sometimes it is sooo incredibly fast and I don't feel like I can keep up. And then sometimes it's just right.

This is definitely a 4.75 star review with a few small nit picky points which just builds upon what others have already mentioned.... Pros: + Convenient access and centrally located for those just north of/near UNC and Coker Hills. + Large playground that doesn't seem to get too crowded most days of the week and but when it does, it can be a chore to score a coveted infant baby swing. + A humongous hill that seems to be perfect for bigger kids to roll down + Awesome access to Bolin Creek (takes you up to MLK near Foster's and Flyleaf) and Battle Branch Trails (takes you right up to UNC). + Plenty of community programs and activities including a small but useful climbing gym on select nights. + A small swimming pool with lanes (for better swimming options, look into the Homestead Aquatic Center). Cons: - Can be a bit crowded on weekends. - Parking can be a mess as well when it gets crowded. - Bathrooms are a bit unclean and can be missing some TP! - Be prepared to deal with some sassy kids (& their parents) on the playground sometimes. Tips: + If you're interested in using the climbing gym, but aren't sure you want to commit for months at a time, get a punch pass. + If you sign up/pay for activities and you're a CH resident, don't forget to mention it so you get the resident pricing. + Check out the board at the front for the monthly schedule. + Free wifi courtesy of the Town of Chapel Hill, but it's a bit dodgy and slow as all heck. + If you can bike here, do so - you'll save yourself the hassle of having to maneuver around in the crowded parking lot.
