Tucked into the woods near to Hocking Hills, Ravenwood Castle is a surprise even if you already…read moreknow what you're getting yourself into. One minute you're driving along backroads in Ohio and then BAM, you're starting at a medieval castle. Ravenwood Castle is well known for its focus on games of all kinds - board games, social deduction games, scavenger hunts - you name it, they have it. My mom and I came for a special weekend where they were hosting a murder mystery. Put on by a separate company, but hosted within Ravenwood Castle, our murder mystery experience started on Friday night and ran through Sunday morning. We worked in teams to solve the mystery and along the way participated in goofy and quirky games and puzzles to help us score points. When you stay, you can eat on site, or you can book a cabin and bring & prepare food in a small kitchenette. Alternatively, there are a few places you can order from / go out to in the surrounding areas, but nothing is particularly close by because the castle is in a remote area. While I found the food to be mediocre, the beer and whiskey selection is great, and a surprise stand out was their version of butterbeer, which is dangerously chuggable. If you're someone who loves board games and wants a weekend away to connect with friends or family, this is a great place to go!

There is a plethora to choose from as soon as you check in or when you're dining in the pub or premade scavenger hunts to do while walking around the property during your stay. My husband and I aren't board game enthusiasts but we did have a great time at the castle. After checking in we made our way to the King Arthur Suite, a short walk from the check-in desk and through the dining hall. The door to the King Arthur Suite is quite literally in the middle of the dining hall which we personally felt was kind of awkward because it is a prime gathering space for most of the guests. The two story suite was spacious, painted in a funky green and featured a giant jacuzzi tub which was the highlight of the room. A comfortable four poster bed on the second story made us feel like royalty and is close to the door that leads to a porch over looking the grounds behind the castle. My husband made a fire in the large fire pit outside of the castle that is closer to the cabins. The area was stocked with wood and we spent the majority of our evening enjoying a warm fire on the cool fall night. The pub downstairs serves beer and basic bar fare. It wasn't very busy when we stopped by but service was wonderful and we felt very welcome. Another couple proposed the four of us play a game together and we reluctantly obliged. Our patient competitors taught us how to play "Ticket To Ride" and it was a blast. So, in the end, Ravenwood Castle (and our new friends) did turn us into game people.

I am an OU alumna and sad to write this review. I have chosen the OU Inn for years -- not because…read moreit's the most modern option (it isn't), not because it's the closest to campus (it isn't), and not because the rooms justify the price gouging that comes with Mom's Weekend (they don't). I chose it for the nostalgia... and the sense that as a member of the OU community, this was my hotel. I won't be making that mistake again. Here's what happened: I booked a room for Mom's Weekend 2026 a full year in advance -- because that's what you have to do when a hotel decides that one weekend a year justifies a $500/night rate. Fine. Supply and demand - I get it. What I didn't get was any reminder. Every hotel I've stayed at across the world -- and I travel frequently -- sends a "We're looking forward to seeing you this week" days before check-in. The OU Inn, apparently, has not discovered this technology. Instead, I received a reminder email at 7:10 PM -- after check-in had already passed. Not so useful. When I called and acknowledged my own mistake -- I genuinely did forget -- I wasn't asking for a free pass. I asked only to cancel the second night, understanding I'd eat the cost of the first. The response? A rigid recitation of the 48-hour cancellation policy by River at the front desk. On a sold-out Mom's Weekend. When hotels in Athens are turning people away for months before. The idea that they couldn't rebook that room -- on the busiest weekend of the year -- is either dishonest or incompetent. And then the cherry on top: I received a cancellation confirmation email Saturday morning, which gave me genuine hope that someone with a pulse had reviewed my situation and done the right thing. Nope. Turns out the system auto-cancelled when I missed check-in -- and then staff **manually re-entered my reservation knowing full well I wasn't coming.** That is not a clerical error. That is a choice. I have kids at OU now. I will be making the trip from California multiple times a year for the next three years. I was fully prepared to be a reliable, repeat customer -- someone who picks the OU Inn on principle, even when better options exist. That's what loyalty looks like. What I experienced in return was rigidity, indifference, and staff that were, frankly, rude about it. To management: you had every tool to make this right. A waitlist. A goodwill gesture. Basic human flexibility on the most in-demand weekend of your year. You chose none of them. For $450 (refund for one night), you've lost a customer who was already sold on you.

Very well maintained. Staff is very cordial. Rooms are clean. Breakfast is excellent. Only minor…read moreissue with the design. I saw young kids trying to push big luggage pieces on stairs as the elevator is not accessible directly on 2nd floor.

We kicked things off with a glass of Sangiovese, which was excellent, and paired it perfectly with their crispy calamari--tender, flavorful, and not the least bit chewy. The small Italian house salad and the beet & goat cheese salad with citrus dressing were both spot-on in taste and portion size, while the garlic bread stood out with its distinctive cheese blend and deliciousness. The entrees were generously portioned, leaving us with plenty of leftovers. On night one, the rigatoni Bolognese and chicken Parmigiana were absolute standouts--phenomenal flavors we'd order repeatedly and highly recommend to anyone. The homemade pasta and sauces were truly outstanding. The following evening, we enjoyed the fettuccine carbonara Alfonso and linguine Alfredo with grilled chicken, once again impressed by the rich sauces and fresh pasta. We capped off the meal with a shareable cheesecake topped with berries--expertly made and the ideal sweet finish. This has quickly become our go-to spot when staying at our cabins in the Lancaster area. We'll be spreading the word to our guests and returning soon! The staff was warm and highly attentive, with our server Bridget shining as a true standout. P.S. As folks with Italian roots who know authentic Italian cuisine, we can confidently say this place delivers the real deal!
