I love this place and to learn about our beautiful town! Downtown stuart has so much to offer to residents and visitors, my kids enjoyed their time here and loved the idea of learning where they are being raised, the owners are welcoming and friendly and very nice people, there is so much historical sites and things to learn.

This museum is located in an historic feed store built in 1901 in downtown Stuart. It is the oldest commercial building in Martin County. The building was originally the George W. Parks General Merchandise Store. George W. Parks and his family lived upstairs and the store occupied the first floor. In 1924 George sold the store and in 1946 it was purchased by the Truman Fertilizer Company and named the Stuart Feed Store. The City of Stuart purchased the building in 1988 and formed the Stuart Heritage, Inc to preserve and protect historic buildings in the town and artifacts from the city of Stuart. The museum opened in 1992. It's free to visit the museum and parking is free too. I stopped by on a recent trip to Stuart. I didn't have too long before closing and there was a lot to look at. The museum has over 10,000 from the 1880's through the 1950's. The city of Stuart took root when the Florida East Coast Railroad came through in 1894. You can find pictures of the railroad in the museum. The museum also has an exhibit dedicated to the Seminoles who were the native people in this area. They lived on the banks of Poppolton Creek and used to come in to the store on Saturdays to trade. Some of the displays are dedicated to the local legends like Trapper Nelson who died from a gun shot that may have been self inflicted or maybe not and the Ashley Gang who like Robin Hood would steal from the rich to give to the poor in the 1910's through the 20's. A final shoot out with police in 1924 killed John Ashley and every member of his gang. Another part of the museum is set up like a general store with ceramic chickens that are a nod to the chickens that used to run around inside the building. Items in the museum are in chronological order starting with the Seminoles, the pioneers, the 1920's through the 1950's. Some of the items are things you might have seen in your grandparents home like antique sewing machines and vintage refrigerators, A favorite display was a recreated ice cream parlor from the 1950's. The executive director of the museum is Mary Jones whose own family makes more than one appearance in the museum. Her family moved to Stuart in 1907 and her father was the town fire chief and her grandfather was the contractor for the Lyric Theater. While the emphasis is on Stuart and Martin County the museum also tells the story of Florida. You could spend a short time here or hours looking through all of the fascinating items. The museum also has a small gift shop with handmade crafts from some of the pioneer families in the community and a selection of interesting history books relevant to the area. It is definitely going to take me another visit to finish going through all of the photographs and treasures. If you are a fan of history like I am you will want to pay this quaint museum a visit.

Admission is $20 for adults, with child and military discounting. There's a lot of outdoor walking space around the main lake/lagoon where you can see the nurse sharks and sea turtles amongst the many other fish there. The weather was really nice the day we went, so we took a stroll through the nature trails. They are mostly boardwalk trails with a few covered stops with benches. The main trail is a 1 mile loop but there is also a 1/3 mile loop that is good for kids. The main trail will take you to the Indian River Lagoon for some nice storefront views! The main building has some cool artwork made of reclaimed beach litter that makes you really think about proper waste disposal. There's also a few tanks with cool fish and such to see. The entire center has a few different spaces for bathrooms that are easy to access. I'd recommend coming here for a nice day in the fresh air and sunshine to enjoy the flora and fauna of Florida!

Each leg has something different to see and handle. Then we went inside the building and checked out the tanks and all interactive things. Walked up to 3rd for nice view of the place and back down to watch the feedings. There is talk about stingrays but no food. Next they feed the fish in the huge open air aquarium. Nurse sharks, rays, jacks, and lots more. The feeding was interesting as was the talk after about pollution and algae. Next off the green sea turtles feeding. They were having romaine lettuce. They put colored pole with a shape that each knows. They swim over bump the Pole and get fed. These had boat injuries so they would never be in the wild. Again another talk about them while they are being feed. Good for adults and great for kids. Highly recommended.

It's the only remaining House of Refuge of the original ten built by the U.S. government along the Florida coast in the late 1800s to shelter shipwrecked sailors and travelers. The Gilbert's Bar House of Refuge played a crucial role in saving lives during a time when shipwrecks were common along the treacherous Florida coastline.

We always thought it was just an entrance to the beach but to our surprise, it was more than that. Once you park, there are a few parking spaces labeled specifically for this museum. Entrance is right next to the parking. You start at the first little house where you'll get a video about the place itself and its history before you start the tour. Once you start the tour you can visit the actual refuge house and find a collection of antiques artifacts, walks along the house while reading and learning about its history, the Georges Valentine shipwreck and Don Pedro Gilbert. You can also visit the Quarters, stroll around the garden in the back facing the street and the lagoon, snap some pictures on the benches or swing on the rocking chairs while facing the beach, enjoying the breeze and counting the ships and boats you can find. Our toddler enjoyed playing with the helm by the rocking chairs and pointing at everything he saw Behind the House of Refuge there is a nice spot to take pictures by the rocks and the beach. We witnessed a small wedding ceremony during our visit, right by the watch tower. Overall it was a great time for the 3 of us and a good way to spend our Saturday. I'm glad we found this small place and learned so much about the Hutchinson Island history.

Model Trains Who…read moredoesn't love model trains? Once upon a time every kid had a set of trains hanging around the house that got dusted off for endless trips around the Christmas tree. As we got older the real diehards had rooms in their house dedicated to creating tiny worlds full of trains and this is exactly what you will find at the Treasure Coast Model Railroad in PSL. The TCMR is located in what used to be an old fire station on Becker Road and opens to the public for a few hours on Saturdays- but check their website for hours etc. I took my two littles over for a look as I always wanted to indulge in this hobby but never had the time or space for it. Upon entering you are faced with multiple landscapes with all types of trains - each section of the layout seems to be managed by one or more of the member of this club and on open house days they are all there proudly showing off their creations. The amount of detail that goes into the landscapes is sort of a lost art and I'm sure many hours are spent creating and maintaining the layouts. Trains are running, factories are making things and there are lots of little villages and vehicles to look at as you move from one section to the next. The physical layouts are roughly chest level for adults - but there provided some folding stepstools so the kids can get high enough to actually see what is going on. Definitely a great way to kill an hour for anyone who loves trains - there are a lot of details packed into those landscapes. Give it a visit when they have their open house - you will surely appreciate all the craftsmanship that goes into these types of places. Fair amount of parking behind and to the side of the building.
