Trained with Garnett back about a decade ago, stepping into the ring and fighting from the same team. Dedicated in training and can think outside the box of traditional martial arts. Later on went to do some sessions with him. From the standpoint of a professional fighter, Garnett is knowledgable in regards to the workings of the body, both in the realms of fighting and the tools one needs to maintain the body for longevity and aesthetics. Example: I had been hunched over from constant drilling in my fight stance, and we implemented some exercises such that I could stand tall and straight without having to think about my posture. Of course we drilled in fight training and I was able to learn to get lean in my lower abdominal which always came difficult for my body type. Garnett is the best. I've trained with Garnett in the past and he's shown me a whole gamut of exercises I would have never been exposed to. He has great technique and breaks things down so I can not only follow the exercises while he's assisting me, I'm not afraid to do them on my own. I am probably the best person to give a review of this gentleman here. And it won't be short. *Hopefully this forum has a sense of humor similar to ours.* Mostly because I hate working out and exercise and being healthy in all its forms. For me, it's pure torture, but it's important, so I do it. Or I don't do it, most of the time. Which is my problem. Because who wants to go workout when that really nice looking plush couch and large cheese pizza is calling your name? Which is what brought me to him. I've known of Garnett for a few years now and I knew that contacting him would be the be all end all of my bullshit approach to fitness and my ass would be whipped into shape in spite of my half assed efforts to do so on my own. In the past I've tried working out on my own at NYSC. Which basically is just a major fail all around. Half the people in there (people and trainers) have no clue what they're doing. Me having been one of them. I trained with someone for almost two years and at this point I can look back with certainty and say that I took nothing from it. I was training like a body builder, despite an old back injury, even though I really had no interest in doing so whatsoever. I wasn't coached on diet, I wasn't coached on form, I wasn't given the tools to be confident in working out on my own. I was utterly and completely lost and intimated by the process. I can't entirely blame him, because I know I was half heartedly moving through the motions, however after only a month of training with Garnett, my outlook on this process has changed entirely. I've only been with him for a little over ONE month (not training nearly as often as I'm sure he'd like) and he's already completely reshaped my eating habits (no easy task here as I resisted for almost the entire time but he is persistent with his check-ins and knows when you're screwing up), I'm down 5 pounds (nothing crazy but I've been holding onto those pounds for like two years now) and my confidence and comfort levels with the type of training I am getting from him has been unparalleled. I have NEVER before understood what I was doing in the gym, or what is happening to my body while training, like I do with him. I bitch and moan and complain through our sessions (which he finds humorous) but he never fails to correct my form, push me through the sets (no cheating or bailing out - sometimes he makes me start over if I quit mid set - or makes me run a quarter mile if I sit down - he is not playing around! - but he's also not a barker so don't be scared - he ain't scary!) and always takes the time to explain to me exactly what I should be doing in a move (focusing on which muscles to engage) and why we're doing what we are. Which for me, has seriously been life changing. I can't even put into words how impressive and encouraging his training style and knowledge of fitness have been for me. Not to mention that the majority of what we do together I can do at home with my mini home gym (go me!) instead of forcing myself to go to the sleazy gym that I still despise. He is hands down THE BEST. The gym is great also. Never crowded. No oglers. Clean and neat. Weights are racked perfectly. Always good music. Bathroom is pristine. And towels are abundant. Garnett really knows his stuff. When I first decided to get a personal trainer, I thought I was in decent shape and was making mild gains lifting by myself. After working with him for one session, I realized I had been messing up my joints by trying to throw up as much weight as possible. I wasn't even engaging the right muscles - in fact, I didn't even have awareness in several muscle groups. Garnett teaches proper form and has a real plan customized for my body type and goals. He is a great motivator and also a fun guy. You'll actually enjoy working out with him even though he'll kick your ass too. The most interesting part is that I wanted to workout just for aesthetics but we're getting strength, functionality and mobility as well. Garnett also does more than just train you while you're there, he gives nutrition advice and will hold you accountable. He even lets me take photos of everything I eat to provide feedback in real time. He will coach you on when to eat what as well. Lastly, he'll challenge you to incorporate what you do in your sessions on your own so that you're really learning. I didn't think I had much fat to lose yet after 2.5 months, I've lost 15 lbs and 2 inches off my waistline. It's incredible because people at work don't realize I've leaned out so much and think I'm getting skinny. What they don't realize is that if they saw me in only a tanktop, they'd be shocked how much lean muscle I am hiding. My original intent was to work with Garnett for a couple months to get in great shape then take what I learned and do it on my own.
