Um, lots of the them. - His curriculum is as flexible as you need it to be. Not just from a course load, but maybe you got your ass kicked at work that day, and don't want to work super hard on verb tenses: He will adjust to your goals and your emotional needs that week, that day, that moment. - Homework is dependent on you, he can assign or not assign: it depends on what you want. - The schedule can be flexible. Travel a lot? Got personal stuff? He can work around it. - His teaching style is thorough, thoughtful, and useful. There isn't a single session that feels like fluff or wasted time. And even after an hour or so, your brain is still ready for more. I started at once a week. Then went to twice a week. And if I could've found the time, I would've done three times as week. The Bad: - Dino is a giant presence. Literally. People want to stare at him. It'll put you in the spotlight. You will meet people and interact. You may have to put your new skills to the test. Buen suerte, mijo. - Your friends will be jealous that you are kicking their ass with your new language. It's ok, you deserve the kudos. - You will go to every taqueria in SF and order in Spanish. Locals might hate you for that. Or love you. Kinda depends. I little knowledge is dangerous. - You may fall in love. Go find out why. Seriously, Dino is an animal with languages. A strong, understanding beast who will help you with a thoughtful program, designed for your needs. Get to it.

Which means your lesson isn't going to be some dry textbook-style drone. It's going to be as colorful as Dino himself. To top this off, Dino is kind of a language genius so his immense intelligence and understanding of the ins and outs will be gifted to you in the hour sessions. Bonus! He meets most students at Cafe Flore so you can have a glass of wine which loosens the tongue for those who find it tied. Dino has also started teaching Spanish classes for our restaurant employees which has been such a boon for an industry where language is what creates the gulf between front and back of the house. So whether you want individual lessons or a group class, Dino is the man.

It was an easy and refreshing transition, and in retrospect, we regret we didn't attend La Scuola from the start. The parents, students, and staff are all so welcoming. It is a safe, warm, creative, and spirited campus where my kids come home happy each day. They are learning now more than ever in their primary subjects. In addition, they are learning new things like how to play string instruments, speak two different foreign languages, and art/design. Academically, they have grown so much as the school teaches in a manner that allows students at various levels to stay engaged and positive. I am impressed at how knowledge, comprehension, application, analysis, synthesis, and evaluation are worked into all of their units. The teachers collaborate across curriculums to teach the same topics in various subjects so students develop a much deeper level of understanding. Their character development and lessons in morality (worked into their regular curriculum and their advisory period) are just as good if not better than what we experienced at a sound Catholic school. I appreciate how they are not told what to think and instead are asked to analyze real-world issues and develop solutions. During Covid 19 the school shined in adapting to the challenge. The students were given technology on the first day of school which allowed them to miss very little academic time. Their genuine care in the students' well-being is visible in how they invest time in advisory so teachers can talk in a less formal setting with students about their feelings in dealing with online challenges. They run PE with yoga and meditation, helping students physically and mentally adjust to these challenging times. La Scuola is a school that listens to its' community as it strives to improve continuously. The campus expansion they have planned as well as their outstanding leadership and staff means the future of this great school is only going to be better. This is a relatively new school and no school will ever be perfect, but it has been the perfect place for us.

Just fyi, we have no Italian at home and love that our child is learning the language and will take on Spanish in the coming years. I can't recommend the school enough.

She is incredibly resourceful --whether it's tailoring lessons to my goals (conversational, ordering food, asking for directions), finding creative ways to explain tricky grammar, or sharing practical tips for real-world conversation, she always make sure students walk away with a deeper understanding, lots of practice time with each other, and had fun while doing it by focusing on topics that interests them or gamifying the lessons. She even wrote her own book series based on her experiences of what works best with young children and teens. Kyle balances professionalism with genuine warmth, so every session feels both productive and enjoyable. Despite my daughter's crazy schedule with sports, music, school activities, teacher Kyle always finds a way to be flexible and accommodate our needs. My daughter is now in high school and of course chose mandarin as her language of study because of the fun and support she received from teacher Kyle. If you're looking for a mandarin teacher who is not only skilled but also truly invested in your success, look for teacher Kyle!

She's been a wonderful teacher and makes learning Chinese a fun and enjoyable experience. She's friendly, engaging, and always has such positive energy. I'm so glad we found her! Kyle Laoshi uses a variety of games and activities to keep the class interesting, and she's so good at motivating my kids with fun digital prizes that they talk about with each other like they're real. ;] They like working from the printouts she provides, and they love how she shares funny personal stories related to the content they're learning. The class is a quick 30 minutes which works great for our busy schedule. Kyle makes efficient use of time in each session. The pace is just right and my kids are focused and engaged the whole time. Kyle is able to get them to chat conversationally in Chinese and participate often in each class. Our classes are usually a mix of native and non-native speakers, as well as kids of different ages. Kyle takes a lot of time before each new semester to make sure each student is placed in the best class for them. I highly recommend Kyle Laoshi as a Chinese teacher. She's a great fit for kids of all ages and skill levels, and she's always willing to work with you to find the best class for your child's needs. I'd recommend doing more than one class per week if your schedule allows, as we've found that both a conversational and a read/write class can provide a well-rounded learning experience. If you're looking for a dedicated, talented, and fun-loving teacher, Kyle is the one!

Fast forward a couple of months and I'm half way into my second session and I've learned quite a bit while having a lot of fun. Classes are conversational, so it's not a whole lot of note taking or just writing things down although we are supplied with a binder and every week we are given handouts for the classes. We do take some notes but it's more about learning a few basics and taking it from there building on the previous weeks lessons. Also, the classes are pretty small, about 12 or less from my experience, so if something is not clear, it's very easy to ask a question. I'm taking a trip to Italy this summer and I have no doubt that I'll ready to get there and put my skills to work.

You will not learn from a teacher that is two lesson plans ahead of you, he seems to know everything about Italian having lived in Italy for years of his life! You will not simply learn to pass a test, there are no tests! Instead he will teach you a useful approach to speaking Italian! Along with his masterful approach to teaching a very difficult language he incorporates the local Italian businesses into a "culture" in which his students are invited to participate. He even works with Native Italians to introduce his students to the cooking skills and micro-cultures of the Italian way of life! He is not the most tech savvy, shiny classroom, lifeless computer module of an instructor; he is a face to face, etymologically gifted, guitar and flute playing song leader of an instructor (he teaches italian songs to his students). I am so glad to learn from him! It can't be easy to teach me a language but somehow he is making it happen, and in spite of all this learning I am even having a good time! Ciao bello!

The teachers are super friendly and empathetic towards our daughter, and she seems to love all the activities, such as painting, playing outside, singing and dancing, and there's lots of toys. She's never gotten injured and she's made about 4-5 good friends and is starting to get invited to birthday parties and play dates. It's a very positive experience for her and now she gets so excited when it's a "school night" and she gets to see her friends the next day. I also love that she's exposed to Spanish, as it's technically a Spanish immersion pre-school. Given she's just now learning language in general, I believe it will be very useful for her brain to start comprehending multiple languages, so that later in life it's far easier for her to be multilingual. Though one thing I find interesting is that the kids still speak English to each other, and our daughter will come home from school with lots of English phrases she picked up... from all her friends! But she does sing some songs in Spanish, and she's better at counting in Spanish than English, she does the alphabet in Spanish, and she likes to boss us around using Spanish words now. So that's pretty cute and interesting. But so far I haven't seen her have a conversation with someone in Spanish, though she's pretty conversational with us with English at home. Overall I think Hola Kids is a great experience for kids and I'd recommend it for other families looking for a fun pre-school with a language immersion component.
