Kyle Laoshi uses a variety of games and activities to keep the class interesting, and she's so good at motivating my kids with fun digital prizes that they talk about with each other like they're real. ;] They like working from the printouts she provides, and they love how she shares funny personal stories related to the content they're learning. The class is a quick 30 minutes which works great for our busy schedule. Kyle makes efficient use of time in each session. The pace is just right and my kids are focused and engaged the whole time. Kyle is able to get them to chat conversationally in Chinese and participate often in each class. Our classes are usually a mix of native and non-native speakers, as well as kids of different ages. My wife and I have been taking adult lessons from Kyle while our kids (ages 9 and 7) have been doing private kids' lessons. Kyle has been outstanding at both. Our kids genuinely love it. They'll complain when we have to cancel and cheer (literally!) when we tell them there will be class tonight. When my Berkeley-based family returned from two years of living in Taiwan, our then-7 year old daughter was fluent in Mandarin. Since we don't speak Mandarin in the home, I was concerned that she would lose it quickly. We tried several different things: having her FaceTime with Mandarin-speaking grandparents, taking a Mandarin-language art class. But we could see her rapidly losing ground. We even considered a Saturday-morning Mandarin school program, but heard too many negative stories to proceed. Then we discovered Kyle laoshi. At first we were super set on our daughter having a one-on-one Mandarin learning experience. Kyle laoshi evaluated her and placed her in a small group with other native speakers. After two years of these small group lessons in both conversation and reading/writing, I can see why her method works! Kyle laoshi is super fun and engaging with the kids. She has a way of making class enjoyable, even on Zoom (which is saying something!) I know there's a pedagogical method to all she does, but what I see is my kid enjoying the class games and competitions and, best of all, continuing to speak and understand Mandarin. Classes are very reasonably priced, and honestly, I think she could and should charge more because of the value she gives. Kyle has a very warm personality, and I can tell she sincerely enjoys teaching children and has a very fun, lighthearted approach using games and digital rewards. Kyle has been absolutely pivotal in providing continued Mandarin and PinYin speech / reading / writing instruction to my elementary school-aged daughter. Like many, we lost our in-person Mandarin instruction during the pandemic. We started working with Kyle in June 2021 because of her custom teaching content, engaging approach with the students, and availability through Zoom classes. It is so easy to integrate Kyle's classes along with our other after school activities and commitments. My daughter has greatly enjoyed the small group classes with kids of similar age and ability where they actively engage in games and constructive dialogue with the vocabulary and content in a meaningful way (no rote learning here!). Kyle is warm, playful, and adept at giving each student the right level of support needed. Our 30-minute sessions zip by and, unlike other classes, my daughter is excited to talk about what they did and learned afterwards. Kyle is such a joy! I never thought I'd have so much fun taking a Chinese class. I find myself looking forward to classes every week and our laughter-filled lessons would always fly by too quickly! Aside from being a delightful person, Kyle's teaching style works wonderfully for me! I'm not sure how her lessons are structured for absolute beginners, but I find the organic nature of our lessons to suit my needs perfectly. I am in a unique position of being pretty advanced in my speaking skills, but having no formal Chinese education. (I grew up in Malaysia and speak a localized version of Mandarin Chinese with my family.) This means that I would need a rather customized lesson structure to make any progress. Kyle is very thoughtful in coming up with interesting class materials for me, and we have a lot of fun going over standard Chinese phrases, as well as urban/colloquial expressions. She will work with your schedule. She can teach students at all levels. Her English is very good and we communicate via text and email. I am a true beginner and need to learn conversational Mandarin in preparation of a trip to China and Taiwan. My son, who is in the 1st grade and also recently started with her, has been learning Mandarin in school, but needs extra help with tone and confidence with speaking. She knows how to effectively teach adults as well as children - she plays games with my son so he can learn numbers, colors and vocabulary. He cannot wait to see her face on the computer every week. She teaches me in conjunction with a textbook that is easy to follow and available online. Her rates are reasonable, she accommodates my schedule every week, and she manages to customize lesson plans as we go in a way that makes learning Mandarin fun and engaging. I've tried learning Mandarin in the past, but could never find the time or motivation to be consistent enough for anything to stick. Meeting with Kyle once a week over Zoom in the comfort of my home or my office gives me no excuse to skip a class and motivates me to study, practice and prepare for the next class. For context, prior to working with and learning from Kyle, I had been teaching myself some rudimentary Mandarin for about 5 months using the Hello Chinese app. I had made some good but early progress and was ready to step up my 学汉语 (learn Chinese) game. Kyle is such a lovely person and a great teacher! She's been teaching me Mandarin for about six months now, we've been making great progress. We have a one hour class every week which I'm always looking forward to. My original idea for taking these classes was to prepare for a longer trip to China next year, but it's also become my favorite hobby!
