Um, lots of the them. - His curriculum is as flexible as you need it to be. Not just from a course load, but maybe you got your ass kicked at work that day, and don't want to work super hard on verb tenses: He will adjust to your goals and your emotional needs that week, that day, that moment. - Homework is dependent on you, he can assign or not assign: it depends on what you want. - The schedule can be flexible. Travel a lot? Got personal stuff? He can work around it. - His teaching style is thorough, thoughtful, and useful. There isn't a single session that feels like fluff or wasted time. And even after an hour or so, your brain is still ready for more. I started at once a week. Then went to twice a week. And if I could've found the time, I would've done three times as week. The Bad: - Dino is a giant presence. Literally. People want to stare at him. It'll put you in the spotlight. You will meet people and interact. You may have to put your new skills to the test. Buen suerte, mijo. - Your friends will be jealous that you are kicking their ass with your new language. It's ok, you deserve the kudos. - You will go to every taqueria in SF and order in Spanish. Locals might hate you for that. Or love you. Kinda depends. I little knowledge is dangerous. - You may fall in love. Go find out why. Seriously, Dino is an animal with languages. He meets most students at Cafe Flore so you can have a glass of wine which loosens the tongue for those who find it tied. Dino has also started teaching Spanish classes for our restaurant employees which has been such a boon for an industry where language is what creates the gulf between front and back of the house. It was an easy and refreshing transition, and in retrospect, we regret we didn't attend La Scuola from the start. The parents, students, and staff are all so welcoming. It is a safe, warm, creative, and spirited campus where my kids come home happy each day. They are learning now more than ever in their primary subjects. In addition, they are learning new things like how to play string instruments, speak two different foreign languages, and art/design. Academically, they have grown so much as the school teaches in a manner that allows students at various levels to stay engaged and positive. I am impressed at how knowledge, comprehension, application, analysis, synthesis, and evaluation are worked into all of their units. The teachers collaborate across curriculums to teach the same topics in various subjects so students develop a much deeper level of understanding. Their character development and lessons in morality (worked into their regular curriculum and their advisory period) are just as good if not better than what we experienced at a sound Catholic school. I appreciate how they are not told what to think and instead are asked to analyze real-world issues and develop solutions. During Covid 19 the school shined in adapting to the challenge. The students were given technology on the first day of school which allowed them to miss very little academic time. Their genuine care in the students' well-being is visible in how they invest time in advisory so teachers can talk in a less formal setting with students about their feelings in dealing with online challenges. They run PE with yoga and meditation, helping students physically and mentally adjust to these challenging times. La Scuola is a school that listens to its' community as it strives to improve continuously. The campus expansion they have planned as well as their outstanding leadership and staff means the future of this great school is only going to be better. This is a relatively new school and no school will ever be perfect, but it has been the perfect place for us.

She is incredibly resourceful --whether it's tailoring lessons to my goals (conversational, ordering food, asking for directions), finding creative ways to explain tricky grammar, or sharing practical tips for real-world conversation, she always make sure students walk away with a deeper understanding, lots of practice time with each other, and had fun while doing it by focusing on topics that interests them or gamifying the lessons. She even wrote her own book series based on her experiences of what works best with young children and teens. Kyle balances professionalism with genuine warmth, so every session feels both productive and enjoyable. Despite my daughter's crazy schedule with sports, music, school activities, teacher Kyle always finds a way to be flexible and accommodate our needs. My daughter is now in high school and of course chose mandarin as her language of study because of the fun and support she received from teacher Kyle. If you're looking for a mandarin teacher who is not only skilled but also truly invested in your success, look for teacher Kyle!

She's been a wonderful teacher and makes learning Chinese a fun and enjoyable experience. She's friendly, engaging, and always has such positive energy. I'm so glad we found her! Kyle Laoshi uses a variety of games and activities to keep the class interesting, and she's so good at motivating my kids with fun digital prizes that they talk about with each other like they're real. ;] They like working from the printouts she provides, and they love how she shares funny personal stories related to the content they're learning. The class is a quick 30 minutes which works great for our busy schedule. Kyle makes efficient use of time in each session. The pace is just right and my kids are focused and engaged the whole time. Kyle is able to get them to chat conversationally in Chinese and participate often in each class. Our classes are usually a mix of native and non-native speakers, as well as kids of different ages. Kyle takes a lot of time before each new semester to make sure each student is placed in the best class for them. I highly recommend Kyle Laoshi as a Chinese teacher. She's a great fit for kids of all ages and skill levels, and she's always willing to work with you to find the best class for your child's needs. I'd recommend doing more than one class per week if your schedule allows, as we've found that both a conversational and a read/write class can provide a well-rounded learning experience. If you're looking for a dedicated, talented, and fun-loving teacher, Kyle is the one!

Fast forward a couple of months and I'm half way into my second session and I've learned quite a bit while having a lot of fun. Classes are conversational, so it's not a whole lot of note taking or just writing things down although we are supplied with a binder and every week we are given handouts for the classes. We do take some notes but it's more about learning a few basics and taking it from there building on the previous weeks lessons. Also, the classes are pretty small, about 12 or less from my experience, so if something is not clear, it's very easy to ask a question. The teachers are super friendly and empathetic towards our daughter, and she seems to love all the activities, such as painting, playing outside, singing and dancing, and there's lots of toys. She's never gotten injured and she's made about 4-5 good friends and is starting to get invited to birthday parties and play dates. It's a very positive experience for her and now she gets so excited when it's a "school night" and she gets to see her friends the next day. I also love that she's exposed to Spanish, as it's technically a Spanish immersion pre-school. Given she's just now learning language in general, I believe it will be very useful for her brain to start comprehending multiple languages, so that later in life it's far easier for her to be multilingual. Though one thing I find interesting is that the kids still speak English to each other, and our daughter will come home from school with lots of English phrases she picked up... from all her friends! But she does sing some songs in Spanish, and she's better at counting in Spanish than English, she does the alphabet in Spanish, and she likes to boss us around using Spanish words now. So that's pretty cute and interesting. But so far I haven't seen her have a conversation with someone in Spanish, though she's pretty conversational with us with English at home. Overall I think Hola Kids is a great experience for kids and I'd recommend it for other families looking for a fun pre-school with a language immersion component.

Both my children have favorable memories of CAT. They felt safe; physical confrontations &…read morerivalries at other public schools seem non-existent at CAT. Talented teachers have a passion for their work. The administration staff is professional & approachable. Day One for Freshmen is closed to other returning students, a considerate way to help these kids transition to high school. In 2008, when my older son first attended, the school had an 'alternative' vibe, emphasizing project collaboration & individual presentation skills. Now in college, my son, compared to students from other schools, has a more developed ability to present ideas to a group of people. He attributes it to CAT nurturing and exercising those skills. Internships give junior & senior classes work experience in retail, government & non-profits. Students are responsible for locating & accessing these opportunities. My children took pride in their accomplishments as interns. Being treated as peers in an adult world contributed to their growth as young adults. My younger son feels that the school's cutting edge diminished over time, as CAT became more like a traditional high school. For eight years, I was happy with the school. Our last day, my younger son's graduation day, was a disappointment because of one teacher who had been fired. The reason behind his dismissal was the bizarre behavior exhibited in his classroom. According to one student who provided evidence: -In class he advocated separation of races, teaching that interracial marriage was wrong. -He taught that gays hire African American males in order to emasculate them. -In a Facebook post, he endorsed violence against women, claiming that Ray Rice "did nothing wrong" in beating his girlfriend, an incident captured on video. -He used class time to present positive views of violence against children as a teaching method, recounting, in class, an incident in which he physically struck his own son because his son sang a song that the teacher considered "too white". The school, to their credit, got rid of him immediately after discovering the situation. Members of CAT's 2016 graduating class, however, when challenged by this seduction of racism, misogyny, & homophobia, failed that challenge. Students embraced the intolerance. Two students gave speeches at the graduation ceremony. Both those students paid tribute to this teacher, accompanied by the approving applause of their classmates. The school did go to great lengths, in curriculum, to expose the historical damage done by racism, misogyny & homophobia. I don't fault the school for students' failure to absorb the importance & complexity of the lessons. Does fault lie at the feet of their parents? With the students themselves? I'm torn. The students are good kids. Why would they honor a man who spewed hatred & bragged about cruelly beating his own son because that child did not share the teacher's hatred of other races? His obsessive vilification recalls the Iranian religious clerics' crackdown on Pharrell's song 'Happy' in 2014. I wonder how many of these students will go on to emulate their chosen role model, and beat their own children while feeling justified in doing so, despite the documented psychological damage those beatings cause in children. Years ago, a news report on Egypt included 6-year olds at an anti-Mubarek demonstration. The children shouted and waved signs, wholeheartedly chanting "Mubarak must go". But realistically, the children were too young to understand the meaning behind their actions. Obviously, adults had fed opinions to the children, who exhibited heartfelt enthusiasm geared more toward pleasing the adults who prepped them, rather than any intellectual objection those 6-year olds had with Mubarak's policies. Does it take more than 18 years for children to begin to think critically, rather than parroting the opinions of manipulative adults? Recently, observing an interracial couple on the street, I couldn't help but notice the loving manner in which they regarded each other. I thought about the arrogance of CAT's teacher, a man who had burned through two failed marriages, yet considered himself fit to judge the marriages of interracial couples as wrong, and taught this nonsense in class. I thought about students in his class who happened to be children of interracial marriages, and the message the teacher thoughtlessly delivered to them, that their lives were the result of disparaged unions. Yet members of CAT's class of 2016 held the teacher in great regard, spoke highly of him at graduation and referred to him as a role model. They gave little, if any, thought to fellow students who were children of interracial parents. I'm reminded of what Philip Zimbardo said in 1971: "We all want to believe in our inner power, our sense of personal agency to resist powerful situational forces. For many, that belief is little more than a reassuring illusion of invulnerability."
