If you're going to groove and dance to tunes, also probably not the best place as the party seems to be happening all around the emerald peacock with loud tunes radiating into the bar.  But if you're going for a cosy venue for small to mid-sized groups with great fresh pizza (their margherita ( carameilized onion anyone) is delicious, hawaiian comes in second, and then the Hipster with artichoke and pumpkin) and delicious cocktails (get the Mr. G - a green pina colada with a minty refreshing twist), then you're in the right place.  We were a group of 20-25 with lots of seating, both indoors and outdoors, great quick food and drinks service and it didn't feel crowded at all. We could still hear each other despite the number of people.  It's located on a street with lots of restaurants and is easy to walk past (but look out for the peacock art on the inside walls - Not an emerald peacock sadly).

Actually it took me quite a while, and a lot of trial and error, to actually get to this place, but I finally did - through a rather non-descript door on Lonsdale street. In fact this place is more than just a really cool rooftop bar because the first floor (they don't have a ground floor - you have to go up a flight to stairs to get to the place) is full of nooks and crannies where you can hide away from the crowds with your friends. However it is the rooftop that really attracts me to this place. Oh, I should also mention that the staff are pretty cool, and they even have table service. I should come here more often.

With the weather moody and a desire to roll in the next 20 minutes, we found ourselves at the Kingpin Bowling Lounge for a rather expensive yet enjoyable three games of bowling. Kingpin aims at doing a lot of the things that Strike bowling does (serve drinks, have music, and lights on the lanes) but at the same time it is probably more tailored towards families than Strike. The bowling was fun as I hit a rare 150 (I'm a pretty shitty bowler admittedly). Enjoyable times but the lack of specials they offer means it would be an expensive pastime. I guess it is yet another string in Crown's entertainment bow. If in Crown and you feel like bowling, head to Kingpin. Otherwise, I prefer the Strike experience.

I thought why not lets give this place a try. Jake at Kingpin gave us a true VIP experience, the meals were a nice size and the bargain steak meal melted in your mouth! we played bowls, and received some game cards on the house and we all had a great time! Highly recommended for families or romantic couples looking for a fun filled night with a nice meal and quiet beverage to wash it down.

We go for lunch on week days, about three times per month. All meals are generous and consistently well prepared, presented and tasty. The daily 'specials' are also good value, our last meal was the satisfying 'Irish Flat Breads' (pizza) normally cost up to $18 for $10 (Monday special) Coffee is always $1.95 before noon. You have the choice of sitting inside on stools at the barrel tables, in booths, at standard tables or outside 'al fresco' on bar stools and bench tables. It's a destination for us. Our daytime experiences have always been positive. We even take our friends there. I can't comment on evenings/nights.

Hidden away in…read morea corner of Knox City Shopping Centre's Knox Ozone, it is a small venue which has the energy more commonly found in venues of the inner city. Among locals it is called "The Irish". A traditional irish pub in every sense it sports dark wooden furniture and a few booths at the back - perfect for a catch-up with mates. There are little nooks and crannies in every corner with all kinds of seating from bar stools, to benches to seats that double as small tables. Service is quick, but not quick enough when it comes to keeping the place clean - it is pretty grimy and the chances that someone will spill a drink on you are pretty high so I would caution against wearing your best clothes. Dress code is smart casual - just keep it simple. Entry is only $5 and drinks are relatively cheap too which is always a good thing. The place is busiest on Monday, Wednesday and Friday nights and because of its size is packed full pretty quickly. There is an outdoor smokers area, which is tiny but it doesn't seem to deter patrons from crushing against each other in order to secure themselves some room out there. The dance floor is tiny but again, when there is a will there is a way and there are a lot of very willing dancers here. Patrons range in age from the very young to the very old although there tends to be more males than females.

I will leave the merits of the atmosphere to other patrons for comment. That said, it is a truly Melbourne pub experience. In terms of thirst, there is a good selection of wine and beer. For those who like to eat, the menu is frequently updated and has a variety of options. I ordered the Mexican Parma for dinner. It was served on top of chips. The Parma was very soggy and tasted quite bland. The guacamole topping and pub style salad didn't elevate the dish either unfortunately.

The musical memorabilia covering the walls of the front bar seem to suggest classic rock, but I haven't been around too long to find out (namely because this pub gets really, really crowded on a Friday night). It is also quite narrow, which means that it can also get quite cramped, especially when you try to make you way to the beer garden out the back because they seemed to have squeeze a restaurant in the middle. While I've always found a set in the beer garden, it is also small, and very crowded, so while I do really like the ambience of the place, I really not enjoy squeezing my way through large amounts of people.

It's spacious and leafy and great for large groups, and I love how hidden this pub is -- it's randomly tucked away in a residential neighborhood not far from the hustle and bustle of Brunswick Street. Unfortunately, it loses points for me based on food and service. The service has just always been terrible here. Surly dudes with acne scars and a bad attitude. My food experience here also wasn't good. I ate here once -- got the vegan salad, which looked like my only option -- and it was really bland and tasteless. I think it's great that pubs are serving vegan meals more often these days, but vegans are like anybody else -- they come to a pub to eat fatty foods and drink alcohol. It felt weird downing cheap jugs of beer with my workmates while having to delicately chew on a bowl of raw greens. The dressing was nice, but there was way too little of it, and too many giant leaves. So yeah, basically spent $18 on a giant bowl of greens with some cashews thrown in. Not pub food! Where's the veggie burger and chips?! Anyway. It's nice they made an effort to include something vegan and healthy -- but it was just so bland and boring. I think come here on a sunny day to drink but not eat. Soak up the sun in the beer garden. That's what The Standard does best.
