I've been in the aquarium hobby for years now. This LFS is fantastic with even better & friendly staff. I've visited every LFS in the area and this one is the "best" for freshwater tanks. I'm not into saltwater tanks but there was a great selection. The prices are slightly higher than i'm used to but I understand the business model and margins. I've had wrong info before about aquatics and wound up with small little fishy terrorists that ate a bunch of my other fish and destroyed my plants. That's not the case here! This place is amazing! I've been wanting to check it out for a while now and finally got around to it. I've been three times now and planning to go again. The store is clean, I'm always greeted with a smile, and the staff is extremely friendly, helpful, and SO knowledgeable!! All of the fish are alert and look healthy and well cared for. Even the plants look great!! I usually get a little nervous adding new fish to an established community tank, but all of the fish I've purchased from them have been healthy and I've had no problems. You can tell the staff is passionate about what they do and want to be sure their fish are going to be cared for even after leaving the store. Their prices can't be beat, either. This place sucks... Sold my 15 year old son a chubby frog and everything he needed to go with it. He bought a tank and they searched around for a lid that fit. They found one that fit perfectly but, it had two small gaps in the back panel. The frog got out in the middle of the night and got too cold. He died the next day. So this is less than 24 hours after purchase. We went in to explain and they said it was impossible for the frog to get out of that space pretty much calling us a liar. She even glared at my son like he must have done something wrong. Actually, he was very overly concerned that everything was perfect and sat watching the frog for hours until he fell asleep and that's when the frog got out. I told them I would bring all the equipment back if they had no compensation and they said "NO!! it's used. We will not give you anything back." In the end they gave my son 25% off another frog. I really hope that this review was worth $29.99 the cost of a frog. I will never recommend this place to anyone or return myself. Two stars is for the 25% off read more

Called in needing a tank. Noticed all the bad reviews but a tank is a tank. Brenda answered and was extremely helpful. She had a 150 gallon tank for $150. I asked her when they closed and she said 7pm. She put the tank on hold. I leave Carson to make the long drive over and arrive at 6pm. Open sign still on and doors locked with lights off. They decided to close early. Kinda shady. I've noticed complaints on here about them closing store often without notice. I was today's victim. Thanks Y'all!! read more

This is the best salt water and fresh water fish store in Reno. All the fish salt and fresh all also super healthy. The best prices in town. All reef corrals are healthy and prices are great. The Customer service is the best they are very helpful and and will help you with anything. Petco amd any other fish store doesnt even compete with strictly reef. To be honest, I don't think the kids who work here want any customers. I came in a handful of times looking to get fish, and each time I left disappointed either by their stock or the employees attitudes. I asked them if they could special order a fish for me that I've been looking for and they seemed very irritated that I even asked, but they told me they would look. When I called them back a week later all they said was "no" in a very annoyed tone. It's obvious they didn't bother to try. I won't be back because of their attitudes, their prices are much higher than other pet stores in the area and if you ask the kids who work there questions about fish and equipment, they will likely stare blankly at you and flatly say "no" with no further information. Overall; not a great variety of fish and the kids seem like they'd rather hang out than speak to customers and seem annoyed when anyone walks in. They don't seem to have very much knowledge on fish other than the common ones they keep. If you're looking for a great fish spot in Reno I recommend Sierra Aquatics. They have a fantastic variety of fish and the staff was much more helpful and friendly. read more

Used to be a huge fan of this place until Steve Sennes showed his true colors. I had purchased a ton of saltwater fish and corals from his store. I was probably one of his best customers. I made the move to Henderson, Nevada where I had asked Steve if he wouldn't mind packing all of my corals accordingly and he said absolutely with no issues if I paid for shipping, done deal. So, UPS drops the order off and not only did I lose every single coral that was shipped ($750 plus worth), the box was punctured and he just threw them in there with zero oxygen and combined hard corals with soft corals which caused them to die. Steve has zero ethics and is notorious for not paying his vendors and ripping good people off. If you want good quality stuff from good people, go to Ofishal. read more

I was excited to see how new management would treat this place and it's still pretty much par for the course for Reno fish stores. Hair algae, cyano, aiptasia, and ich in the stock tanks. There's nothing impressive in the frag tanks, just your standard soft corals and some brown LPS/SPS. When I mentioned the ich to a worker (owner?) he said he doesn't have a quarantine tank set up yet, which is a poor excuse. $100 to set up a few 10g tanks is not a huge investment. I realize the reality of running a fish store is that ich will be present, but you either need to treat or euthanize fish that heavily infested. Maybe once the new owner gets his bearings the store will be worth visiting, but at this point don't bother making the drive. read more

This is a great shop with a great selection of live rock, coral, fish, and equipment! I bought a 10 Gallon Innovative Marine tank from them to set up a Nano Reef system. They were more than happy to take the tank out of the box and show me everything before I purchased it. The owner was also very helpful in recommending the amount of live rock I would need as well as was very helpful in answering any questions I had. I came back in after the tank was done cycling and picked up some Zoa, Paly, and GSP frags at really fair prices. The frag tanks are very clean and everything in the shop looks very well maintained! Also I love that I can buy premixed salt water at only $1.00 a gallon here. That will save me time on water changes! The vitals are doing great in my tank this morning and I'm already wondering what to add to my tank next! read more

This store doesn't value established clients. I've given away corals, purple fire fish and live rock for free (donation) to this store. I've purchased fishes, anemones and corals from this store. I had a horrible experience with the the store two days ago. I bought a gold torch coral. The coral was open when I was buying it and it was hard to see how many heads it had. I asked how many. He said 4. When I got home and acclimated the coral it turned out it had 3 heads, not 4. The dead skeleton was obvious. I called the next day to let him know that the coral was smaller than he said. Juan told me that all sales were final and that it was my responsibility to check the condition. That would be a valid response in a different situation. However given the fact that I specifically asked him before buying about that, his response makes no sense. He lied just to make a sale. To make things worse, Juan told me I low balled him. The coral had a sale price of $144. I told him I'd take it for $150 out the door. He adjusted the price to $138 or something in that range to make after tax price $150. That's a low ball, dude? You seem to forget all the corals, fish and live rock you got from me for free. And giving $6 off on a $144 coral is not low ball. He offered to take the coral back for store credit. I refused it. I have no desire of doing business with an untrustworthy person like him. I would have taken an apology instead of refund or store credit. read more

Strictly reef has the most knowledgeable staff in reno and fair prices that match prices online. My husband and I started a saltwater aquarium recently and had a thousand questions. The staff was so patient kind and had an educated answer for each question. We called a few days later with more questions which were all answered and the lady even remembered who we were. We went in later that day for live rock and she had already prepaired an ice chest box for transporting our rock because I had told her we would have a long drive that day. We were impressed by the super clear/clean freshwater display tanks and the healthy fish, inverts and plants within. The picture of health. They have assassin snails!! Good variety of marine species is sure to appeal to serious hobbyists. Gorgeous community saltwater setup up front; the corals and giant clam (!) and fish are so brilliant they look fake. Came in today and checked this place out. I've been out of the hobby for a while, but recently rescued a small tank from someone who could no longer care for it. I see a lot of these reviews are older and from a different owner. Today I met Juan. No, it wasn't a mind boggling, blow you away reef store. But it was better than any of the other choices in town. From what I saw today, all the livestock appeared healthy. I saw no ich or any other apparently unhealthy fish. Most all the tanks actually had fish in them, and he had a pretty varied selection. Frag tank looked ok. I didn't see aptasia anywhere or any bad amounts of bad algae. He had a few good pieces, and a few of the normal dull corals for this area. Prices were good, right about in line with the big box stores, and certainly a lot cheaper than sierra. My only gripe were the frags seemed a little on the expensive size and large. But that is probably more of my personal taste, I like to spend less on small frags and enjoy growing them out. I spent some money, and am happy with what I left with. And I'll be back. read more

Whoever works there on weekends is extremely rude and 100% not interested in being there. My wife went in to the store a few weeks ago with our daughter and she came back with no fish and a complaint at how rude the guy was to her. Doesn't even deserve a star. So confused as to how he's still in business and how he has such great reviews(probably just a front for something else). Every saltwater tank had aiptasia and a ridiculous amount of algae. The corals were dying and half of them were bleached. Almost all of the fish had ich. There wasn't proper lighting on any of the tanks and he hassled us the entire time we were there. He also had the audacity to say he has the best corals and prices in town. Honestly, petco has better quality fish and corals than he does and that says A LOT about what we experienced today. read more

Went in for the first time feeling very excited.. For I am a coral junkie and was about to get my fix.... Or so I thought.. They have some really impressive sized hammers you don't see around here much and over all I wanted to take half of what they had home (not just hammers!) Fish variety wasn't that big.. I was hunting for certain fish.. The thing making me give 2 stars... Every single tank including the fish only tanks were contaminated with aiptasia! (Glass anemones) okay I get that it happens.. But every tank? The lone employee in the store was sitting at the register... Sorry I would be at war with this stuff!! The specimens are pretty large so it's telling me that they have given up on the battle.. I did buy a couple of coral, they are in quarantine and I so far seem to be winning the battle to get them clean.. I may be back if I feel like doing battle with aiptasia again... The coral other than that appears healthy.. They didn't have much on them when I dipped them and they are eating meaty foods with gusto! Updating today is 31May2016 My family and I being coral junkies stopped in during last weekends outing to Reno.... I am pleased to see the action of the store to start war on the Aipastia issue.. The big coral tank looked pretty good.. Yes we did end up buying coral and yes we will be back soon! I can only hope they keep stocking nice corals for decent pricing.. Hard to find in our area... A work in progress! Every time I go in there's a little more inventory and livestock. Today's purchase included 6 plants and two fish. Plants are healthy as are the fish. No sign of disease or other problems in the store. Being a small business owner myself, I totally get the process. I buy small guy local whenever possible and will continue to support Juan. Update 4/2/18 Juan has done a fantastic job of making the old Strictly Reef Reno's go to place for wet pets. When you first arrive, there is a fantastic salt tank just to your left and a bomb discus tank to your right. All of the fish, corals and inverts are healthy and active and the tanks are spotlessly clean. There is an excellent supply of food, including frozen and they are happy to special order for you. Also, they are keeping a good amount of tanks for sale in the store as well as some beautiful pieces of driftwood, rock, substrate, and whatever else you can think of. Michelle is awesome and both she and Juan know their stuff. This isn't a part time job for them, it's their livelihood and it's easy to see they are fully committed to the process. I have zero problem paying a little more than the big box stores because I know I am getting top quality from LOCAL folks who have a vested interest in the success of their business. He guided us thorough the confusioning world of pumps, filters, skimmers and lighting. Into the world of natural self substancing reef eco systems. Now have 16 gallon tank living in den. With 125 gallon being set up. Steve can deliver and coach person thorought the entire life changing process of caring for a Reef Tanks. Started out talking to people at big box pet store. 3 hours later after filling 2 carts with saltwater reef tank system supplies. Found out sales person had never started or cared for saltwater tanks. Person actually got mad when ask questions. Told he knew the best methods. We Walked out. Drove over to Strictly Reefs. I purchased 7 fish a little over a week ago but the (anthias) Pseudanthias pleurotaenia a beautiful pink fish Michael had a hard time getting it out of the net its fin was stuck so she had to shake it out , we got it to the aquarium in 20 min and did the acclimation by that time the fish was lethargic and did not move much, like the other fish.Over the next week it would not eat . I called the same day with in 2 hours and told her the fish was injured but they said to let it stay in the tank to see if it got better . When it died I called and they said if it had died in 2 day they would do something but I called and said the fish was injured in 2 hours but they will not replace it . This is not good customer service . I would understand if the fish died in my care after 2 weeks but I called within 2 hours of purchase , and said she had hurt the fish getting into the bag . But no customer service ... just we will not do anything . read more
