I have specific cravings for their soft serve and when it hits, I HAVE to go here. Handel's, Mitchell's, Jeni's just doesn't cut it. It's a pretty low maintenance little spot with no tables just by the parking lot. For how ancient this place is, they take credit card which I really respect. Cash only places give me the downers. They always have an interesting flavor(s) of the week or day. I've tried banana which was excellent. Their strawberry was kind of meh though. Believe it or not, their vanilla is the best flavor. Their soft serve is just impossibly smooth and they pile it high in the waffle cone. Heaven. I also like that they're open late and there is always a huge crowd even when it's pouring. The informal dollop of ice cream reminded me of a crazy haired troll doll which added a bit of special charm to this treat. The chocolate with almond was very tasty! The little almond bits added a nice contrast of crunch to this soft creamy custard soft serve which was creamy and not too sugary sweet but had a nice chocolate flavor. Not a deep dark chocolate taste but pleasant. The Vanilla was good too. I think the texture is what's most notable about this ice cream. This place is fantastic. I was in Akron for opening day (March 5). Despite being 30 degrees the parking lot was almost full and after tasting the ice cream I can see why. I prefer smooth, runnier ice cream so this place was perfect for me. They serve their custard around 20 degrees on machines that were originally built in the 1930s and not able to be reverse engineered (for opening new locations) until the early 2000s. The vanilla machine is slightly different than the other flavors and the one the used for the expansion. Quite a fascinating read on their history. I got the vanilla and it was some of the best ice cream / custard I've ever had. Will be back next time I'm in Akron and would highly recommend! read more

Very good custard. I went there from the time I was a kid, 40 years plus. However they've become way WAY too expensive and stingy. Used to get a good sized cone there for 30 cents. Now their prices have way exceeded making it work stopping. My better half and I stopped there for the first time in awhile. We both got the Turtle Sundae Boats. First thing I noticed was the price. ELEVEN DOLLARS! WHAT? That's right - $11 (ELEVEN DOLLARS) $11 - For 2 ice cream treats - ELEVEN DOLLARS! Then I noticed that the "boats" they use have steps inside the boats. Each step from the top of the boat to the inside bottom of the boat is designed to narrow the capacity that the boat will hold. Mind you, they're already small. But then I notice the design to intentionally stiff the buyer on the the contents. Only 2 very VERY small scoops of custard and then they hide it with whip cream so that you cannot see just how small the drops of custard are inside the boat. Then a little drizzle of chocolate. $5.50 each or 2 for ... ELEVEN DOLLARS! For $11 dollars I can buy a gallon of really really good premium ice cream at the supermarket. And I will. Because until Stricklands reverses their ever increasing prices which are now utterly insane for what you get, we will NOT be back. Oh, and I was not entirely surprised to see how few people were buying cones on a warm summer Saturday evening. Stop the greed. Remember you roots before it's too late. Quintessential frozen custard. Grew up on it and must get when in Akron. They have chocolate and vanilla frozen custard and two specials. Five stars. One of the best soft-served ice cream joints I've been to. They use real banana for their banana ice cream and real grapes for their grape ice cream. Foods being made out of real ingredients sounds so bizarre nowadays, but yes that's how they are rollin. Make sure you use the check-in bogo offer. My husband took me here for ice cream on Memorial Day weekend. Although the Cuyahoga Falls location is right around the corner from our house, he wanted to take me to the original location. They were slammed (they usually are) and although we waited in a long line it moved fast! I had a small (huge) vanilla cone and my husband had a small strawberry sundae. We sat on a bench and people-watched while enjoying our treats. When I was 5 years old I lived down the street from this location - the custard today is EXACTLY the same as it was in the 1970s! In a world where businesses cheapen their ingredients, change their products, close, and cater to stock-holders, Strickland's can be relied on to maintain their exceptional quality. The waitstaff is young, friendly and exuberant - the frenzied energy in the kitchen made me smile - everyone looked happy! I wish I knew if tips were accepted, there were no visible tip jars and we didn't want to offend anyone by offering. Oh, by the way, the custard is made the original way using unique custard machines and hand-scooped into cones/waffle cones/cups. The custard is light, smooth, and creamy - no unpalatable ice crystal texture. It's as if they froze flavored whipped cream. If you sign up for their emails (offered for individual locations) they will send you "Flavor of the Day" updates (these change every 3 days or so). How can this place only have 1 review?!?! Bill got it right, this is an Akron institution, so how it has so little love hurts me. No worries Strickland's I will help you out. Strickland's has a very unique ice cream texture-wise. I'll try to describe it, but it's not easy without having you just try it. It is very stiff from the looks of it, but once you apply pressure, it gives way and is incredibly creamy. It's incredibly different and it's what separates Strickland's from other ice cream joints in the area. As Bill said, this is the original. However, a few years ago someone discovered a few of these ice cream machines in someone's basement or something and opened up a few new locations. They all serve the same ice cream, but something about going to the original makes it better. They serve vanilla and chocolate on the daily(vanilla is the better of the two) and 2 special flavors every day. I used to be on their email list for this info... My favorite is the grape, which is different for an ice cream, but it's excellent. Their maple is also a dream.
