Great experience at NC State as a parent of an undergrad. The campus is exactly what you'd expect in the south, the classic and conservative layout with old red brick buildings lining the original main streets of campus. There are iconic landmarks throughout campus known by the students and the Belltower, of course. There are also updated and extremely modern buildings spanning the large footprint of this growing campus in downtown Raleigh. The campus is kept very clean and there are student, faculty and paid parking lots for visitors throughout. There are apps available for the difference activities and needs on campus, including a safety watch app for parents so they can remain in the know about happenings, even if they're out of state. The campus is very walkable and a lot of students walk to Hillsborough, a road defining one of the edges of campus. There's plenty to eat and shop for on this road. There are several parks on campus and near campus. There are also, I think, around seven gyms across campus, a few of which are designed, especially for the college athletes. Cafeterias also numerous and spread across campus and students can discover their favorite while studying on campus. My son stayed in a pretty traditional older dorm for four years as RA and had a pleasant time. The facilities were a little old, but he had all of his basics. There was a men's and women's restroom on his floor, a laundry room, usually a community kitchen, and a sink and closet in his dorm along with electrical hook ups for his computer and everything else needed. Desk and bed provided as well. There's a Costco in a Trader Joe's in town nearby that you could drive or take the bus to. Campus also had its own bus line for students.

Having had a few college tours under my belt thanks to my son and his journey to find his perfect fit for higher education, we went on the Admitted Student Tour at NC State! It was well organized, informative and walking around that campus, my son just seemed at home. The one thing I can say about NC State is there are a lot of bricks! The gym is outrageously big and has a rock climbing wall.

There's no denying that. I have an interesting relationship with UNC. I was born and raised in High Point, North Carolina. My parents went to Wake, so I grew up a Demon Deacon fan. I was in the minority, starting in elementary school, because most of the other kids cheered for Carolina and Duke. In middle school, I became a member of the ABC Club - Anybody But Carolina. A lot of my high school friends and classmates went on to attend UNC. I went to Georgia Tech and settled in Atlanta. Fast-forward about 15 years and my wife matched into her ophthalmology residency at UNC. We moved away from Atlanta and spent the last four years of our lives in Chapel Hill, so my wife could slave away as a resident physician for UNC Health. For her, it was the most difficult and grueling years of her life. For me, I used it as an opportunity to explore Chapel Hill - mainly the businesses on and around Franklin Street - and go to Carolina men's basketball and football games when they played Georgia Tech. As expected, we beat Carolina in football, even when they were ranked and favored, and lost to Carolina in basketball. It was a lot of fun to attend the games at Kenan Stadium and the Dean Dome. I do have to mention I was at the last men's basketball game between Tech and Carolina on January 30, 2024 in Atlanta. Tech upset Carolina, then ranked No. 3 in the country, 74-73. UNC has a beautiful campus and the Town of Chapel Hill is a great college town. Generally speaking, in this regard, I think UNC is a model university for the classic American college experience. It seems to have it all and is more well rounded than, say, Georgia Tech, which is heavily research and engineering focused (not as typical a college experience, in my opinion). After spending four years in Chapel Hill and getting to know a part of the UNC community, mainly through my wife's program, I've softened on Carolina. I do admit I was very proud of my wife as soon as I learned that she matched into UNC's ophthalmology residency (Kittner Eye Center). Funny enough though, my wife still rooted for Georgia Tech over North Carolina and still does to this day. I successfully brainwashed her. Aside from certain things related to her work - much due to the broken US healthcare system, not necessarily specific to UNC or UNC Health - we leave UNC with nothing but good memories.

I last hung out on campus just a few weeks ago and it is as friendly and warm as always. Carolina girls always are, and the boys are pretty cool too. One of the coolest things about it is that it's close - walkably so - to Raleigh, but also close to Cary and Morrisville and Chapel Hill and Durham, all of which have some real food gems in them. So as long as you have a car you can eat really well at this college. And not too expensively either. Did I mention how much I like the girls here.

The faculty are really helpful and always address my questions and concerns in a timely manner which I was worried about since I can only communicate with them through email. Grades are always posted on time and accurately. I really appreciate the Pirate port program that they use for accessing your account. The Dowdy student store has really great prices. I recommend to everyone to rent books. The process is very easy and worry free and extremely cheap. While I am not able to visit campus, all my virtual experiences have been fantastic!

The school store is located in there, along with Panda Express, Au Bon Pain, more dining and the 4th campus Starbucks! The overall campus is so pretty and we were lucky enough to have a fantastic tour guide, Brooke P. who is also from WF. The school has so many state of the art features, new buildings, gorgeous facilities and the grounds are so beautifully landscaped. Our tour guide definitely has Pirate pride and really loves the school, she answered all of my questions and I can see why so many kids pick ECU. Our daughter is definitely applying, remains to be seen if she'll be accepted and or attend ECU, but if she chose this school, based on what we saw today, I think she'd be quite happy here!
