I know what you're thinking, four stars for some wigwams? This kid is on the crack! Ok hear me out before you cast me aside for some younger, cooler, taller yelper! I went to Strathfillan Wigwams a few years ago for a friend's 21st birthday and had a ball. There were 5 girls staying in one large wigwam and it worked out at about £15 each per night! On the outside these little wooden wigwams don't look much, but on the inside there are bunk beds with comfy covered mattresses (you have to bring your own sleeping bag or you can hire bed linen) and there is electricity so the wigwams are heated and have lighting and you can use your hair straighteners, phew! There are also communal facilities such as a toilet and shower block, fully equipped kitchen and a washing machine and tumble dryer, all of which are kept spotlessly clean. The lovely little farm shop sells lots of yummy locally sourced meat and other essential food stuffs such as bread, milk, eggs, fruit and chocolate. It also has some toiletries and other bits and pieces like playing cards. Admittedly I'm not too sure what there is in the way of stuff to do in Crianlarich because we just drank all day and all night! We had some ipod speakers and all our ipods and a portable DVD player and that amused us for days! That and the booze obviously! We did venture out one day to walk off the hangovers in the lovely fresh air and the scenery is beautiful. We had a picnic table and a campfire outside our wigwam and we toasted marshmallows and told stories too. However having a quick look at the website it looks like there is loads to do nearby if you are slightly more adventurous than we were! If you think what I've described sounds too much like roughing it then you can always hire a lodge instead. It's the same idea as the wigwams except they have a kitchen, bathroom and living area built in so you don't have to use the communal one. Of course this costs more than a wigwam would. Another alternative is to hire a gorgeous yurt! These weren't here when we stayed at our wigwam but they look wonderful! They are based on Mongolian style yurts and have a lovely wood burning stove in the centre. So go on, try something different! You might like it! read more
I like the idea of cheap accommodations like the wigwam. Cuz frankly, the inns on the West Highland Way arent much better than this. so i rather just pay less and enjoy the outdoors without feeling robbed. the marketing photos look a lot better than in person, but its no way bad for being camping like. wigwams are located on the west highland way and next to a farm. you can check out the animals. beds were solid unlike most inns. bugs can get in as this is basically a wooden tent. it was nice that there was a little fridge in the wigwam. we rented sleeping bags and it came with a liner for you to sleep in. theres a little shop with some things and a sandwhich bar. kitchen is sparse and the clothes washer was slow. showers were strong and cheap (1 pound for 8 mins). for under 50 pounds for 3 people, i enjoyed my stay. we just brought our own snacks and waited for our laundry to be done. FYI, theres only 1 washer and 1 dryer for the whole place. its 1 pound per hour. to wash synthetics, it took 90 mins. Just to give you and idea. so wash early as there will be a queue 3-5 deep. read more
We camped out in Strathfillan for new year's this year (2015) and it was bloody brilliant. Situated in the middle of nowhere, I had no idea what to expect when we got to our destination. We drove up in the evening and due to the tumultuous Scottish weather in December, it was raining icy bullets. As much as I enjoy camping I'm very much a summer bird, and was dreading the prospect of seeing the Bells in through the freezing cold. When we got here, we found a wigwam decked out in fluffy cushions and a roaring furnace inside. It was cosy, like a living room, but with the feel of camping outside since you could hear the rain hammering down on the canvas sheets. However, we were completely protected and other than the windy storm brewing, within we were curled up chatting around a toasty fire telling stories from comfy seats. Strathfillan is kitted out with cabins, a shop (which was staffed on NEW YEAR'S DAY. DEDICATION!) a kitchen, toilets and a shower. We had a wee dance outside for the bells in the fully lit main area, with fairy tube lights adorning the cabin headquarters and fireworks overhead. It was a peaceful night's sleep in the wigwam - if anything it was, unbelievably, too warm with the furnace still being on - and we woke up to our mate cooking us a massive fry up. In short, I was glad it was a pampered camping experience, where no Scouts skills were necessary for the evening. If you like wild camping you can always set up outside, but for those of you who like the Great Outdoors until you have to sleep in sub zero temperatures - or even those who haven't camped out at all - this is a great introduction to it. Scenic, off the beaten track and an alternative to staying in a hotel - and so much cheaper when split 9 ways - I would highly recommend this place and can't wait to return! read more
