The Stovepipe Wells General Store is way more than just a dusty little shack in the desert. It's actually pretty spacious and well-stocked--which, out here, feels like finding an oasis with air conditioning and cold beer. I grabbed beer and souvenirs, but they've got a bit of everything: snacks, sunblock, postcards, T-shirts, hats, probably even a can opener if you begged nicely. Basically, if you forgot it, they probably have it - except milk (unless you want oat or almond - seriously!) Prices? Shockingly reasonable, especially when you're 100+ miles from the nearest Target. And shoutout to Ryan (pretty sure that was his name)--friendly, helpful, and clearly holding the general store together with good vibes and sheer willpower. Definitely worth a stop. When stranded in Death Valley! Imagine miles and miles and miles of nothing but dry desert and then just when you are ready to give up all hopes of seeing anything but dust, rocks and passing cars you see a sign of civilization out there! That is how it felt to me the first time I travelled through Death Valley National Park, entering from the West side. On this trip I took a left just south of Lone Pine onto CA State Route136 eventually hitting hitting CA-190 heading east, then there was almost 60 miles of nothing until you arrive at Stovepipe Wells Village. In 1906 when the road between Rhyolite and Skidoo (both ghost towns now) was established a temporary settlement was established on this location. It was no more than a collection of tents that were meant to serve travelers with food, drink and lodging. During the heydays of Rhyolite and Skidoo, this was the only known water source on the road. At some point when sand obscured the spot, a stovepipe was inserted there as a marker, giving the place its unique name. The construction of the hotel at Stovepipe Wells began in 1925 by an entrepreneur named Bob Eichmann and this marked the beginning of Stovepipe Village's transition from mining community to tourist destination. The general store was build years later, and I could not find a reliable source of history for it, but I can tell you that if you are visiting and run our of supplies, this store is the only place that may come to your rescue! The only shop for many miles: Death Valley National Park We've been through here a few times driving to/from Las Vegas (twice in 2011). It is located in the Stovepipe Wells Village across cottage motels, restaurant, and a saloon. The country store is also a souvenir shop offering some unique items and novelty gifts. They also have a wide range of snacks, drinks and sandwiches for a quick bite. During COVID-19 times you may find yourself waiting in line to get inside the store as they limit the number of people inside for social distancing. It can get busy but the cashiers are fast getting you in and out and on your merry way. We stopped here a couple of times during our recent visit to Death Valley... Outside the store you'll see some historic wagons and some authentic western stuff. There are benches on the side of the store and some rocking chairs in front. The whole area is busy with tourists which only means parking can be challenging during their busy season. The parking area is huge, though. There are restrooms on location and a gas station adjacent to the store (super expensive), ranger station, and also a tent and RV campground on site. Too bad this cute general store was closed due to Covid! I would have liked to browse it and shop in there. I peaked through its windows, it did seem to have cool merchandise. Great location, a plus for me was the restrooms situation. They were open and the nicest and cleanest within the Death Valley National Park. A tad of luxury for this girl, much appreciated. There are picnic tables and trash cans near by. Also, there's a gas station next by that's open. Decent area for a stop, a break. We had a picnic for lunch here. Gift shop was closed due to COVID. However, gas, bathrooms, general store, and pool were open. Probably the cheapest gas within 80 miles and cheapest in Death Valley. The bathrooms were the flushing type and clean, gas is 87 octane only (No Premium or diesel.) Not much to say, other than most of the things here are open. read more

Cute little country store located in stove pipe Wells village. This is where you're going to find the cheapest gas. Across the street from the gas station is a small bar, a cool fire truck and lodging. Lodging fills up very fast. So be sure to make your reservations months ahead of time. I always stop here on my way in to pick up snacks and additional water as well as to gas up. The customer service is always friendly. read more

If you're staying here at Stovepipe Wells and you run outta beer, this little store will get you right again! Just wander across the highway from the lodge and pick up what you need. There 's a good variety of chips and snacks as well, for when you leave Death Valley, you need some good road food and they have that here. Don't but gas here, unless you really need to, cause the prices are super high. Fill up in Bishop, Beatty or Pahrump before coming to Death Valley. If you need trinkets, t-shirts or post cards, they have those too. Prices are no bargain on the beer and soda, but being out in the real middle of no where, that's what you get. read more

The owner of this store has no business owning a business. His electricity had gone out but he kept the store open anyway. When my partner went to purchase. bottle of water the man had a "melt down". First he lectured his sales lady for letting people open the refrigerator doors. Then this fool started throwing insults at us. I have no idea what he thinks happened but we said absolutely nothing while this idiot went off like a crazy man. He told us to take our money and leave which is exactly what we did. I think he needs some mental intervention. You shouldn't insult the people that keep "food on your table". read more

Where else are you going to go when you're in the middle of nowhere? That's really all that needs to be said about this place. It serves the purpose for which it was intended: a one stop shop for firewood, snacks, overpriced soda, booze, shaving cream, and prophylactics for those craving or in need of any or all of the above while visiting Death Valley National Park and at least 30 miles from any of the exits. Not that being near the exits would help much, either, as the options outside the park are few and far between, too. This place isn't glossy and clean like your favorite QT or modern gas station. It's pretty much typical campground store. Ugly. Staffed by friendly people. Full of junk. There's an RV park outside which is one of the few eye sores in the park, only rivaled by the other areas where RVs congregate (like Furnace Creek). If you're the "camping" type, I'm not sure why you'd come to a national park and then set up in the middle of the desert next to a hundred other campers in the largest park in America...but maybe that's just me. read more

Sort of a lesser version of the convenience store in Furnace Creek. Still, it has what you need, mostly, and the people are always friendly and helpful. I've been coming to DV for many years and almost always stay in Stovepipe. The presence of this store with the gas pumps is a big part of that. - convenient gas, which you'll need in this enormous park. - nice selection of t-shirts, souvenirs, other stuff - beer! and wine! Good selection, all things considered. - Not much in the way of foodstuff but they carry the essentials. A much better selection is had at Furnace Creek but that's a half hour away. - ice. An oasis in the middle of the desert! There are so many amazing things about this store: 1) Service: Extremely friendly. 2) Gas station: $3.27/gallon week of 12/24/18. To put into context, gas station at Panamint & Furance Creek were charging around $4.95/gallon at the same time. 3) Bathrooms: Well maintained. Take this in the context of day 3-4 of December 2018 government shut down, when National Park Services is/was operating on a skeleton crew and bathrooms were not maintained. 4) Goods: Sells Death Valley souvenirs, basic camping supplies (broken tent pole? You can get one here!), alcohol, basic groceries, and coffee. Prices are EXTREMELY reasonable. For instance: you can buy a singular bottle of Lagunitas for $1.50, Beringer Merlot for $12, Tapatio hot sauce for $1.69, fresh coffee for less than $2. They have hot water if you buy a cup of noodle or a microwave for food purchased there. A very pleasant surprise to stumble on this general store. read more

I've fond memories of this oasis in the vast desert that is Death Valley, it being our rendezvous point for countless runs up Townes Pass or drives to Scotty's castle and back, working on cars in the parking lot while dodging ravens. I was always glad to go in and escape from the 130 deg heat and get that ice cold Klondike bar - a treat to myself for withstanding the heat. In the heat of the summer you'd see either European tourists that seemed absolutely miserable and wondering why their travel agent persuaded them to visit Death Valley in July, automotive development engineers looking miserable for having to work in the ghastly heat, or spy photographers looking miserable melting trying to get a shot of next year's model, and everyone congregating at Stovepipe Wells. Prices aren't the cheapest but reasonable considering they're truly in the middle of nowhere so where else are you going to go? read more

Charging more than $10 for a bundle of wood in a National Park is borderline criminal. But this place does not hesitate. People generally come to National Parks for affordable adventure and this place will break your budget quick. You are going to need wood at many of the camping sites and this place corners you and then delivers a nice whallop to your wallet. The "it's in the middle of nowhere, so they can" argument gets old when you realize that Furnace Creek and Panamint Springs stores manage to offer bundles for no more than $7. Shame on you "Stovepipe Wells General Store & The Nugget Gift Shop". We just came back from a long weekend in Death Valley and stayed in Stovepipe Wells. Everything was perfect, this store is not as big as the one in Furnace Creek but it carries all you need including medicaments and flat tire repair kits and we personally found the employes much frendlier than at the other store. The prices were in the normal range and we were actually surprised as previous reviews mentioned this place as being expensive. Every morning we would take our small coffee to go for $1.75 each and some bear claw pastries for $2.25 each. Not bad at all, of you consider this place is in the middle of the desert. The men tshirts, made in the US, were between $13-20 each while in Furnace Creek the proices go as high as $25. There's plenty of parking and all in all this general store gave us more the feeling of "old West" which is gives added value to the experience. read more

Stovepipe Wells General Store is one of the few stores within Death Valley National Park. Are the prices high? Yes, you're in the middle of the desert! Are they as high as some of the other stores? Nope. Compared to the Furnace Creek Ranch general store and the store at Panamint Springs, Stovepipe Wells was the least expensive. When I visited in January 2014, the gas at the station next to Stovepipe Wells was also the cheapest in the Valley. +1 star for carrying beers from local Indian Wells Brewing Company. Not the greatest beers, but oh so good, after a hot and dusty hike through slot canyons. read more

Was highly disappointed with the lack of customer service given by the two cashiers. I asked a question about the nps passport cancellation and was told the ranger station was the only place to do it. I asked if they knew when it was open and the guy responded "the rangers are never there, they come and go whenever." He wasn't willing to help out much pass that. Husband asked for a small bag for our kids trinkets, and the girl acted like it was seriously put out by it. read more

Was surprised with the Tshirts hats and all the souvenirs everything was fairly priced. Not like many park souvenirs where everything is so highly price that you walk out without nothing. Pleasantly surprised. I stopped here because they had the cheapest gas in the park. Most of the souvenirs/trinkets and especially the food is wildly overpriced, as you would assume, but the coffee is not bad and fairly priced at $1.75 a cup. You can buy single bottles of a local beer (pale ale and lager) for under $2 a piece and many other mass market beers for the same or slightly more. Worth a stop if you're filling up your tank. read more
