Sorry for this report because many nice people who work here! Just got followed around the store by a 7 foot robot with cameras all over it, nearly tripped on it! Like a nightmare from the future. The California or further produce looked fairly fresh, but too many carbon miles for our taste, we try to by locally grown produce esp during harvest season (now) and unlike the higher tier supermarkets such as Wegman's, none of it was here. The store's sales pricing does not include the unit price--direct violation of pricing laws. Workers seemed legitimately not even to know or understand unit pricing, which is a cornerstone of consumer rights along with mandatory ingredients listings. I bought three items. They've converted to self checkout and I had no idea how to manipulate their machinery. A very nice lady did assist before being pulled over to another similarly befuddled customer; just then an alarm goes off on my machine, accusing me of stealing an item! Even showing a live picture inside my bag, somehow. The beeping continues, finally the nice but overworked lady comes over to me apologizing on behalf of the store for accusing me of stealing! I go to pay--"your card is declined" says this machine. "impossible" i say. The worker tells me it sometimes "acts funny" so she will try it a different way, and it works. People we need to stand up to this corporate disrespect! Thank Gd for Summit Farmers Market and trader Joes. read more

Large store. Love their quality .. but it's over priced :( unless we are time bound we don't go to this shop. Love their bakery. Lots of options. I also like their olive bar .. Good service. Went to buy salads . They had good varieties of salad but are 20% more expensive than Walmart salads . Walmart also has much better options . Salads were fresh and tasted good . Nice and quick billing .. overall a good experience if not for the price .. lots and lots of parking outside .. read more

This store won't be around for much longer. I purchased some beef short ribs and when I opened them they were rotten. One of the worst smells ever. I returned them no problem. But for them to still be on the shelf a few days past expiration is unacceptable. And the produce is a hit or miss!! I'd just go to ShopRite in sterling!! read more

I've been shopping here for quite some time without negative experience until last weekend. I use the scan it tool and self checkout so I can get all my shopping done quickly and efficiently. After I checked out, I realized there was a significant price discrepancy. I waited by customer service to inquire; although the sign says they don't open until 9am, a young man told me someone would be right with me. Great. As I waited, the woman staffing the self checkout came over and said customer service doesn't open until 9am- I told her someone said they would be right with me; she responded by pointing to the sign with the hours and said (rather rudely) "well there's the sign" and walked away. She did not offer to help or ask me any questions. I was able to walk across the store and another gentleman was kind enough to help me. Maybe I'll go to ShopRite instead. read more

I just moved to the area and this store is just so disappointing. Selection is very poor. Not once has there actually been someone at the seafood counter to assist- I always have to walk to the front to have someone called over. Last week when I was there, the woman shopping for curb orders almost ran me over with her giant cart- didn't even slow down. The self checkout sensors are straight from the gates of hell. The people who work in produce and some of the cashiers are nice- but they won't keep me from going elsewhere to get my groceries even when this stop and shop is under 5 minutes from my house. read more

I like this store, as it's never overly crowded and it always has what I need. Big plus to Aaron in the Deli who is always polite and pleasant. I do have to say this however...today I found and used the bathroom for the first time and OMG! Just before I went in, a worker in a yellow safety vest knocked on both bathroom doors and looked in...his job obviously to check them for whatever. He walked away looking satisfied and went on his way. It was disgusting. Wet and dirty black floors and fixtures...and an empty tube of toothpaste on the sink. All I can say is if there is where workers have to wash up before serving customers and handling items...well, you get it. Didn't have my phone for pictures, but I will next week. If I find the same it will be my last visit. read more

I've sort of given up on writing reviews about the grocery stores I shop in, as they tend to be exercises in petulance on my part (did the cashier greet me with a more than perfunctory "welcome?" Did he/she welcome me at all? Did they smile or scowl as they handed me my receipt? Yeah...true...I really do need to get a life). Still, I don't know that I've ever felt such ambivalence as I've felt towards this particular grocery store. Some months ago, I was ready to write a less balanced/more scathing review based on a few negative experiences I had there. In one instance, I went to a check-out counter where a middle aged women stood staring off into space. As I started to unload my groceries, she started yelling in a language I wasn't familiar with, and...literally...ran away. I stood, dazed. There were no indications the check out was closed. Should I start to repack the groceries I'd already unloaded? Should I just walk away, say "F' it!" and continue on to the Shop Rite down the road? A younger, grim faced woman arrived at the cash register and started ringing me up. I decided to try and be placatingly genial, indicating that there seemed to be some confusion and I was sorry for any mix up. Humorless, the clerk intoned, with all the warmth of a predatory bird, "She was off duty. But since you're already here..." I felt guilty, then angry that I felt guilty. Being the neurotic I am, there are enough things in life that I feel guilty about. Do I need to feel guilty buying groceries? I don't think so. A month or so later, I had a male teenager ringing me up. Now...let me say...I don't necessarily expect much from teens working in such a capacity. I was a teen once (one of my 1st jobs was cleaning toilets part time after high school at the AT&T Headquarters in Bedminster, along with a friend/classmate. One day, we arrived early because 2 older ex-convicts that also worked there bought us alcohol, and we proceeded to get drunk in their van. I floated to work that day rather than walked. Being that it was the 1st...unfortunately not the last...time I got drunk, I lasted about a half hour before it hit me hard. I collapsed in the middle of the ladies' rest-room, where my boss found me sprawled out on the floor. My friend had the better sense to lock himself into the stall of a restroom on another floor before he entered shite-land and collapsed. Needless to say, we didn't last long as toilet cleaners. Did we care? Nah...we're teenagers.) I'm used to teenagers giving me "attitude" when it comes to bagging groceries. One kid at another store rang me up and then stared into space, my groceries unbagged. I also stared into space, until he finally got the message and began bagging them. Am I an a'hole? Maybe, but the young man at the Stop&Shop surprised even me. He rang me up, looked at the pile of groceries unbagged on the conveyer belt, and said, "Hey, dude, I thought you were going to help me out!" I had awakened that morning with a crushing migraine, had taken medication, and it was hitting me with nauseating force. I could only stare at him, my mouth agape. Finally, he shrugged nastily and started bagging the groceries, but I made a mental note that maybe this was a Stop&Shop to avoid in the future. But...I re-considered. The Covid pandemic has put pressure on all of us, in a variety of ways, and my experience has been that a grocery store that offers up a great experience with exemplary employees one day might offer up a much less satisfying experience only days later. And that's what happened here. I took a chance and went back, and an older woman rang me up this time, bagged my groceries, and was so efficient and pleasantly upbeat that I actually was "guilted" into bagging at least some of the groceries myself. The next time I shopped here, she was behind the cash register again, and...again...she was fantastic. I like that they have "one-way" arrows in each aisle, even though half the shoppers ignore them. As with other Stop&Shop stores I've patronized, their baked goods are really top-notch. Some items they're perennially short of, but certainly they're not alone in that. At the ShopRite down the street, they seem unable to stock canned pears. Stop&Shop? They've got my pears. Still...after one positive experience, there's invariably the negative one. I realize all grocery stores are aggressively encouraging their customers to use the "self check out" aisles. I resist it. I don't like paying to do someone else's job, and I like to see actual humans employed. Today, there was a long line at the "self check out," and 1 young man at the only "non self check out" line that was open. He worked hard, as did the young woman helping him bag the groceries, but it was ridiculous. As the line behind me grew longer and longer, I thought, "Would it damage the 'bottom line' to open another check out lane and staff it with an actual human being? Is that too much to ask?" It was obviously too much to ask today. read more

This is the best Stop and Shop. All of the managers and workers are so very nice, knowledgeable and helpful. The specialty sections are outstanding, especially deli and bakery. The grocery aisles are terrific with everything you need and always well-stocked. The front end with self-scan and the registers are so well-run. I love my Berkeley Heights Stop and Shop and it's where I exclusively do all of my food shopping. It's millions times better than that awful Shop-rite in Stirling. No contest. It's such a pleasure doing business with such great people and wonderful store. Always a great shopping experience that I look forward to dealing with such friendly people. I love that people complain about this store. I also love it even more when they don't come here (although they just love to complain, yet still come back to shop there). The store is fine. Slightly overpriced, but I more than make that up in convenience, time savings and gas savings. I'm in and out of the store in 30-40 minutes. Quick. Smooth. No hassles. Cashiers are courteous. Of course Shop Rite (Sterling) is cheaper, nicer and has more items, but very time consuming and my time is valuable. Bottom line. I pay for time and convenience. This store exceeds both those expectations. read more

WHY DO SO MANY PEOPLE FIND IT IMPOSSIBLE TO KEEP REUSABLE SHOPPING BAGS IN THE CAR AND BRING THEM IN INSTEAD OF POLLUTING THE EARTH AND THE OCEANS WITH PLASTIC SHOPPING BAGS? This is nothing but shameful laziness and apathy, so if you recognize yourself, may i suggest that you start now to bring your own bags instead of contributing to this huge problem. NJ should be charging 5¢ or 10¢ for plastic bags as other States do, with the proceeds going directly to an environmental fund (not via the Statehouse, please). That would wake people up ... maybe. This is the closest supermarket to me, so it is convenient and I shop there constantly and see familiar faces at the registers. The prices yoyo the same as at other markets. I don't shop at Whole Foods, or RipOff City as i think of it. When I want reliably excellent products (including house brands) at correspondingly higher prices, i treat myself to Wegmans. When I want cheaper produce and Spanish-speaking service, I head to the Central Farmers Market on Central Ave. I suggest the complainers do the same - and as to unsatisfactory service, NEVER let it pass without comment: ask, comment, complain, report, or you become part of the problem. Dealing with the public is no picnic and for young employees in particular, your comment may help them learn. I have found the Berkeley Heights Stop & Shop staff to respond well and efficiently to a friendly approach. read more

Was so disappointed about a month ago when one morning the cashier turned her back on me & refused to check out my order. I couldn't comprehend what the reason was but maybe some rivalry between the cashiers. I won't mention names but I felt helpless bc my order was too big for the self check. I explained that to the manager & she had that person finally check out my order & that person wasn't too nice about it. Haven't been back since to Berkeley Heights. Bad experience! read more

This store has gone through a total transformation this past fall. It has been completely redone inside. The aisles are nice and wide and brightly lit and cheery. I love that you have several ways to shop. 1. the old fashion way -put groceries in cart, go to checkout , have checkout person scan groceries, pack groceries, and you pay out the door u go. 2. semi new way- put groceries in cart, go to self checkout , u scan groceries, u pack groceries, u pay and out the door u go. 3. new way- put your recycled bags or store paper bags in your cart, get hand scanner, shop and scan groceries as u go, put scanned groceries in ur shopping bag, continue doing this until u have all your shopping done. When u are done, u swipe ur credit card through scanner, no stopping at checkout and out the door u go. This store is stocked very well! the deli department is wonderful, fresh salad and soup bar.All types of imported cheeses, and Italian meats,olives etc. There is a whole section just for organic foods near the fruit and vegetable isle. and did i mention if you don't want to wait there is a computer in the deli area you can order your cold cuts how u like and finish shopping and they will call you when there done. The bakery department has a nice array of fresh baked breads, rolls and baked goods. The fish department has fresh fish with an assortment of different types.For a quick grab and go I've had there sushi several times which is delicious and made by a sushi chef on the premises. I like that there is a small service desk smack in the center of the isles. It's very handy when you can't find something and you can go right to that desk and ask someone for help. Speaking of help, this store has the friendliest group of workers i have ever come across in a grocery store. They are all very eager to answer your questions and help. Over the summer i moved from out of state and didn't know this store and asked every 5 minutes where something is. Boy did i ever test them, and they passed with flying colors! You look for a few things when going to a supermarket. More specifically the 3 C's --Convenience, cleanliness, customer service. As far as convenience, it close to where I live so it gets good grades for that. It's relatively clean so good score for that. Customer service...not so much. Young kids pretty much running the show. The courtesy desk is not quite so courteous. Young kids who just stand around even though you are waiting for something. If you have an issue at the electronic cashier, forget it. You might as well just walk out because there is generally no one there to help you. I still go here since they have good deals and sell Boars Head cold cuts which is key! read more

Here we are; back at Stop 'n' Shop on Springfield Avenue. Why ? Because , sadly, it's the only game in town and I'm pressed for time. Believe me; I ignore this place like the Corona Virus under normal circumstances. What's so wrong with this place ? Try.... ALMOST EVERYTHING ! It starts immediately upon entering. You're greeted with an almost contemptuous stare from the front end supervisor( Lori or Lilly ....something that started with an "L") as she miltitasks between dressing down the latest high school kid , there on their first job no doubt , in a totally rude , ill-mannered, and unforgiving way, and giving grief to the unfortunate senior citizen that had a question regarding digital coupons. It was tough to watch. If I absolutely didn' t need to have stopped there; I would've reversed course right out the door. Having made it past the Wicked Witch's lair; I navigated my way through this vastly underwhelming excuse for a supermarket. Apparently, the concept of competitive pricing is an unfamiliar one here. I get it - it's Berkeley Heights- but c'mon. To say that this place is overpriced is being generous at best. The produce department is a complete and utter joke ! You want those organic tomatoes? Bring a co-signor. Psssst... there's an outstanding farmer's market 5 minutes away in New Providence. The deli department.... pass it by if you plan on sending your kids to college. Not the most sanitary area of the store either. The rest of this place ? I won't bore you with that. You can only imagine. The morale of the staff here makes you believe they're being held against their will. Nice enough people.... just defeated. Cashiers, for the most part, are pleasant. The banter between two of the younger cashiers was enjoyable and refreshing to see and be a part of. They were courteous, professional and totally within good taste boundaries .The "front end supervisor" thought differently, however, and could be seen hurrying over to admonish these two young ladies. Sad. As I made my way to the exit; there it was , again! THE EVIL DEATH STARE from the front end supervisor entrenched behind the Customer Service Desk looking down upon her subjects. It doesn't take an advanced degree to see what's wrong with this place. It's obvious -no secrets here. There is an equally overpriced ACME down the road. While overpriced; it is a much better shopping experience. Shop Rite in Stirling is your best bet. Competitive pricing , welcoming, well staffed, pristine from end to end, variety, quality and competence reign there. You've been warned. read more

I am a new employee there and I work in the meat and seafood dept I enjoy my job and being assistance to customers I try to go out of my way to be of assistance to all customers even if I dont know where items are I go out of my way to find them for our customers. I use to love stop and shop. I can't say that anymore . This Store is always under stocked the deli section its so disgusting how they never clean the machines down between cutting the meats and cheese. I stopped buying my meat here because of this I drive to kings now. I really hope mange management will look into this. read more
