You settle for your 2nd favorite brand but while you're checking out, you write the word "Yuengling" on an index card and hand it to the store owner. You tell him "Get this beer and you'll be seeing a lot of me." When you return 2 weeks later, none other than your favorite beer has made it's debut in the cooler. Wow! This is a true story, and it happened to my boyfriend. On top of customer satisfation, this place is very clean, newly renovated, always stocked, has "fresh" pastries, an ice cream freezer, Funyuns (I have not seen these anywhere else in NYC!), friendly service, and an ATM. What more could you ask for from a 36th Avenue grab-and-go? Nothing. Except for Christmas lights on their beer cooler, which they have too. ;)

If you live near 36th Ave and 29th St in Astoria/LIC, I highly recommend this store!

"Why pay more?" he'll ask every customer. He's right on the money (bad pun intended); the same snacks in this area are 3x the price, and sometimes even taxed. My midafternoon snack cravings are sated and for under a buck. Even with the constant price rising of the most minute items (I'm looking at you Wrigley people) this guy keeps it low and on scale, knowing that it's about volume not gouging.

They make a decent attempt to have fresh produce, some of which is even organic, which I appreciate, and they have a decent selection of all the things bodegas have; they don't have a deep selection of anything, but they have a broad selection of things, so if you're looking for beer or juice or cat food or litter or canned goods, you're likely to find some representation on the shelves. Whether it's your favorite brand or not is another question, but they'll be able to set you up with _something_, at least. However, L&H, rather uniquely, does not sell cigarettes, nor do they have a very good selection of candy or chocolate. I don't know if they don't stock things they morally object to, or just aren't licensed for it, or just don't want to, but they do sell lottery tickets of all varieties, so you can at least indulge _some_ vices there.
