Welcome food believers, I am back to a what you can call historic restaurant here in the area. I am talking about Stookey's BBQ serving since 1926, now the ownership has changed through the years, however they continue to serve the same recipe keeping it to the original. Now their BBQs are topped with relish unless you ask for the BBQ or maybe you are a plain type of person. Now for today I got the beef and ham, both came on a steamed/warm bun. These two sandwiches were packed with their distinctive meats, they were delicious, nothing fancy, just a good BBQ. Now I did a takeout years ago during the pandemic so now I felt it was time to go in house. Now they even offer hot dogs and yes, one of the toppings is chili, so I also did a little Hot Doggin' NEPA style. Again, warm bun, great tasting dog, tasted like an all-beef, the chili was nice and meaty, not spicy. Now the service I received today was a 10 out of 10, very polite and professional, they do take cards as well as cash so if you have never been here or have not been here in a while they would like to see you all again. If you have seen my previous review they have really stepped it up. Haven't been there in years and I was hankering a bbq. Service was nearly perfect. Seems like it's cooked fresh, tasty bbqs. Bathrooms are improved. Overall place is dated, but you're not there for the ambiance. Get your food to go for an easy night of no cooking. It's a bitch to get out of the parking lot. I asked for a pork bbq sandwich on a pretzel bun and I got a Turkey with nothing on it but relish. Pretzel bun was soggy. I ordered a side of macaroni salad and it came in a tiny cup "like a sample container". Got charged $2.08 for basically a sample!! My first and last time that's for sure!! This has been a local staple and favorite since I can remember. We always make sure to stop when we visit Home. The BBQ sandwiches are always very good. The soups are also nice. They seem to be adding more menu items all the time. This last time I was not as impressed. They seem to have changed the buns they use and for me this was a big deal. We ordered two meals, one combo which was supposed to have 1/2 chicken and ribs, meal came with a wing/thigh and the fattiest ribs I've ever had. My meal of ribs was literally all fat. I had about two bites of meat. For $30 this is insane. Sides are straight from a can or jug :( read more

Fantastic French dipped sandwiches. And if you go here on a Sunday there's a fleamarket at the drive-in theater just a couple of minutes away. Great place, no wonder they're around over 100 years! I've stopped at Stookey's a few times now, and it never disappoints. They have a few menu items, but they're really known for their BBQ sandwich's. My most recent trip I stopped in and ordered the Pork BBQ and the Ham BBQ sandwich's. The meat comes out thinly sliced and "stacked", so it's a hearty and slightly messy sandwich. The Pork BBQ comes on a warm, crispy kaiser roll with a generous dollop of relish. The pork is juicy, but not "wet", and is very flavorful. The Ham BBQ is also thinly sliced (surprisingly enough, it's not like thick "Easter Ham" slices), and was recommended to get with a Pretzel Roll and cheese - almost like a hot ham and cheese sandwich. I don't know how else to describe it, it was almost like an Arby's Beef and Cheddar on steroids. It was delicious! On previous trips I've had other items, most notably the ribs. Their beef ribs, so theyre large and "chewy", with a thick BBQ sauce. They're OK.. but if you're going to Stookey's.. get the sandwich's.. that's what they do best! read more

Very, very tasty barbecue. My only issue was paying $2.19 for a couple spoonfuls of potato salad - literally. I'm from the Washington, DC area ... where everything is absurdly priced. I love, love, love this place! The only reason to come are the BBQs. However they have lots of other homemade food that always looks good. It's also a great place to get takeout. My only beef is that they have tried to move to table service for in-restaurant dining. It is poorly executed. They should just give you a number on a stick if you want to eat in and let everybody order at the counter. It's confusing, service is slower as a result. And half the time you have to request that items be swapped because they don't just let you get your own drinks and chips at the counter. And even if you survive table service...you still stand in line with the takeout people to pay---so as a customer it makes no sense. read more

Think about it. It's the hills of PA where pork does not grow and folks here really don't know what BBQ is. People are friendly but that doesn't make up for not knowing bbq. I think this place is not getting the amazing reviews it deserves because it not traditional BBQ like pulled pork smothered in a BBQ sauce that people expect. If you come in with the knowledge that this is a special kind of BBQ that is similar to, but MILES better than, Arby's thinly shaved meat sandwiches, you will love this place. I have been coming here since I was a kid and its always the first thing we would ask if we driving anywhere in Pennsylvania if we could stop at Stookeys (even if we were on the other side of the state). This past weekend, I was driving back from the Finger Lakes in New York, and made a ridiculously long detour just so that I could stop here. I always get their Ham BBQ sandwich with relish (you have to get the relish) and then buy a couple extra to freeze when I get home for when I'm hankering for some good BBQ. They usually don't last the week in my house. I'll be honest, I've never had anything else on their menu, because their sandwiches are just that good. It was just ok. I waited almost 10 minutes for a waitress. I ordered the combo chicken and ribs. The chicken was a bit rubbery chewing. The ribs were ok. Been coming here since the 70s(I'm 46) my Grandmother would make Pop Pop stop here every trip on our way to and from our cousins dairy farm. The smoked BBQ sandwiches are great, A+! I only ventured off the sandwiches once for some ribs, they were good but not great. I always grab a bunch of BBQ sandwiches to go and bring them home, they stay good a few days and never last long in my house. This is not lunch meat folks it is real smoked turkey/pork and beef, most times you can smell the meat smoking in the parking lot. Speaking of the parking lot..... When you pull in the parking lot it's easy to swing your car in fwd and back it in for an easy exit on rt1. Just last Monday it was packed and I was not able to back the truck in but I didn't touch the highway backing out of the spot. The review about that must be salty about something else to bring that complaint to yelp. Speaking of salty...,I do have two requests to the current owners!! Bring back the sword toothpicks that you previously used for decades(don't buy from China please) and bring back the classic pictures of the many cars/trucks that crashed into the building over the years, those pics were fascinating. Please remove the barbecue from your name. All the food came from Sam's club. Potato had cheese from a concession stand. Waiter was confounded when we asked for water. Ribs were oily and fatty. Chicken was oily outside, dry inside. Who make barbecue chicken with the skin on it? He mentioned many times that our "really big" order was hard for them. We had 7 in our group. They deliver fries 20 minutes after ordering, then 2sandwiches of shaved beef 0 minutes late and finally the ribs another 15 minutes later. All the drinks are bottled or cans. They apparently know nothing about restaraunt business. The profit margin I huge in fountain drins compared to can. So increasingly disappointed I apologized to family and stopped at nearest grocery store for food. Would have rather eaten at the game station. read more

Those that apparently love this place are the local residents. 88 years and counting....my family has enjoyed Stookey's barbecues since we were little. My favorite is the pork barbecue. You can eat-in or take out. The barbecue is delicious and the meat is lean. Being nice but I wanted some good BBQ. The chili was good, onion rings were good. They have only one sauce that is weak. None on the table. Drinks only come in bottles or cans with no ice.
