Ridge-chata so yum! Highly recommend! Creamy and delicious, but not too sweet.

We loved this burger joint! We were visiting Ely on vacation and picked this place the first night in town. We mentioned wanting to go back every day we were there so we went again our last night in town. I don't know what kind of beef they use, but it is hands down the best! Their choice of burgers is overwhelming, but not in a bad way! We loved the outdoor seating as well! Saying hi to and petting the pups that obviously own the place was fun too. Haha!

Rustic resort restaurant on the lake! Great indoor and outdoor seating. Expansive burger menu! Ordered holy grail stuffed burger and the Rueben. The burger was good, but not sure it's worth the $22 price tag. The rueben was excellent despite having a twist of using roast beef instead of corn beef. Fries are hand cut and a must! Service was exceptional. She was very attentive, but then again we were only the 3rd table in the restaurant. The sticker shock of the margarita was the reason for 3 stars. $14.50 for rail tequila and pre-made mix on the rocks is severely overpriced! After the second one and seeing the bill will definitely not do that again

After spending 4 days in the Boundary Waters canoeing and camping, and eating dehydrated foods, I asked the outfitter where there was real food in Ely, because we were dying for some. All employees at the outfitter suggested Stony Ridge for epic burgers. So off we went. The restaurant is a very unassuming place. On the outside, it looks like a tiny diner, but on the inside, it is all hardwood, floors, walls, and ceiling, with a huge amount of seating area both inside and out. Our waitress was super friendly and happy. The menu amazed me though. There were 50 different burger options. Fifty! And there were 2 pages of other non-burger menu items. I was literally amazed at the choices. It took us all a long time to order because we wanted to read through every single burger option. (and it seemed that since we were at a known burger establishment, we should all order burgers) And I've been on this kick lately trying cheese curds almost everywhere they are offered, so we ordered those as well. They also had an extensive alcoholic drink menu, which after a week of camping, I wanted to try every single one of them.... but settled for ice tea instead. The burgers that came out were really good. They weren't epic though, which was sad considering how expensive they were. My entire family really liked their burgers, but all agreed they had had better elsewhere. The cheese curds were ok (I don't think I have had cheese curds anywhere yet that have impressed me) In general, we had a great experience and one would think that I would have given them a 5-star review. But there were a couple negatives that I just couldn't get over, to give them a top rating. The cost of each burger was around $20. That is a LOT for a 1/4lb burger. Also, and though I like dogs, there were two large breed dogs freely entering the establishment, and roaming around. This didn't really bother me at all, until one of them stood by my table, begging for expensive food.

The burgers are a little pricy here, but they are absolutely delicious. My favorite is the Ojibwa Burger, which has cream cheese and black olives. The juicy Lucy was alright. I look forward to trying some of their other selections in future visits.

Very satisfying BLT with crispy onion rings. Yay!

Stony Ridge is an oasis sitting above picturesque Shagawa Lake in Ely, Minnesota. We were looking for a place to eat that provided outdoor dining. Surprising few locations in Ely have this available, which is disappointing in light of the ongoing pandemic. We were very happy then to find this little gem. Stony Ridge Cafe is tucked back behind the resort that is just off of North Lakeview Avenue. There is both indoor and outdoor dining but the outdoor dining is gorgeous with great views of the lake through the trees. So beautiful. Just the kind of setting that we love in our visits to Northern Minnesota. We ordered the Mango Margarita, a Dorothy Molter Root Beer, the Cheddar Cheese Curds, the Wicked Walleye, the BLT with Onion Rings, and the Ruff Bird with Onion Rings. Dorothy Molter Root Beer is a regional delight and great to enjoy with this meal. The Mango Margarita was nicely presented and tasted wonderfully Mangoey! Yum! The cheddar cheese curds were battered and fried perfectly with resultant melted gooey cheesey centers. Very tasty with the accompanying marinara sauce. The walleye was pan fried and served on a roll with lettuce. A side of tasty tartar sauce was partnered with this sandwich. The remainder of the plate was filled with hot crispy onion rings. The walleye was well cooked and with the tartar sauce this sandwich was delectable. The BLT was a nice version of this traditional favorite. Crispy bacon with lettuce and tomato on nicely mayo coated toasted bread. Yay! The ruff bird included a tender chicken breast covered with grilled mushrooms, melted cheddar cheese, crispy bacon, and barbecue sauce on a soft bun. This sandwich was a luscious mix of great flavors and very satisfying. We loved our outdoor dining experience at Stony Ridge with the beautiful views. We hope to get back to Ely someday and look forward to dining outside again at Stony Ridge Cafe overlooking Shagawa Lake.

Great place to physical distance and enjoy much better than average burgers. (Other 'American' style menu items too). Grab a table among the pines overlooking a northern Minnesota lake. My kids loved it too!

This is Ely's Hidden Gem. It's a couple turns off Sheridan St, but well worth finding it! I don't want to use a lot of words in this review because the quality, variety, and flavor of these burgers is indescribable. HUGE 1/2 lb. burgers topped with everything from bacon to green olives to sausage to ham to ghost peppers. That's right, GHOST PEPPERS. The "Double Burner" burger challenge is topped with jalapenos, ghost peppers, and ghost pepper sauce. So intense that you need to sign a waiver to attempt it. Check out the photo I uploaded to see my journey to victory through the spiciest thing I've ever eaten. Think you have what it takes to join me on the wall of winners and bring home a "I Ate the Double Burner" T-shirt as proof of your manliness (or womanliness)? Do it, I dare you.

I recommend everything about the frisky otter, except perhaps the fish tacos…read more Which of the frisky otter because we were traveling with a dog to Ely and needed a place where they could join us for dinner. Frisky Outar allows dogs on the patio. We are a little bit worried about sitting outside because there was an air quality at work, but strangely in the Enclosed outdoor patio it was fine. The patio itself is adorable. Beautiful plants tasteful decor. We started the meal cocktails. They have a well curated selection of martinis. I sampled the cucumber lime one and it was divine. I don't typically drink martinis, but this tasted like summer with hints of lime and cucumber. I also tried the lemon drop martini, which I would be cautious about choosing. It's supposed to be a combination of three liquors, including lemon cello, but the lemon cello flavor was so dominant. I couldn't drink it. My friend and I both ordered the walleye fish tacos and point frankly were very disappointed. When they arrived, we practically had to dig into the tortilla shells to even see what fish there was. It looked like it was a chopped up leftovers from something else. Even worse, the fish was cold. We both sent ours back to Get warm fish. I think they might've just microwaved them or something, because what they brought back out was barely warm. But we just ate it anyways. Normally I would expect in a fish taco to have larger visible pieces of fish. These really just felt like leftovers from somewhere. We chose the sweet potato fries as our side, and they were excellent though. I am guessing they were pre made elsewhere and tossed in a fryer. There were many other interesting options on the menu, so I don't want to discount this restaurant. Give it a try, but just avoid the fish tacos. The servers were excellent. Very attentive, refilling our water responding to questions and also being gracious about us sending our tacos back. I should also mention they have a dog menu !! we ordered a side of chicken breast for our little goldendoodle and she absolutely loved it. There were multiple items to choose from. This really is the place in Ely for bringing your dog.

She asked us if we wanted to sit on the patio outside we said if there's availability for the patio, we would enjoy that. She gave us our menus seated us and said someone will be with you shortly While we were sitting there. One of the waiters took his time and cleaned off a table and provided the guest with their check. He continued to clean off tables and even as I raise my voice and said, could someone wait on us he immediately turned his back to us and walked as fast as he could in the other direction ! We had numerous employees walk past us, and even the manager or she could've been the owner walk past us numerous times 25 minutes later we still have not been greeted by a waiter or waitress. No one had brought us Water and no one has acknowledged us! My husband and I have been coming to the Ely area for over 45 years and we have seen restaurants come and go! I am going to predict that this restaurant is going to be one that is going to go in short order! maybe a better name for the restaurant instead of frisky otter is the lazy otter! One you have to offer something different unique that people don't usually get but in Ely, you can get a hamburger and fries at pretty much every restaurant in town! I was super disappointed after having to wait 25 minutes and realized I didn't wanna have to wait another 25 minutes for my meal to come and having to pay $20 for a hamburger! So we chose to get up and leave the restaurant not being acknowledged by anyone on our way out, but the owner or manager was hustling herself about to set up a table for a large group of people when she couldn't even take time to serve two people who had been waiting in her restaurant for over 25 minutes! Shame on you! Looks like the Dairy Queen is a better option at least when you go through their drive-through they acknowledge you immediately and their food cost about the same! If I could give this restaurant zero stars I would!

The way I'd describe it is this: Think of one of those places that you go to because it's got great drinks and lots of places to sit (especially outdoor on a nice day). Now that place also happens to have some tasty snack - not a lot, but they are good. That's Rockwood - except they've got more food than normal. I wouldn't call it a "restaurant" as its primary focus, but there is plenty to eat and you would do just fine going there for just a bite. Our food was, as noted, quite tasty. The divine swine sandwich had some great and tender pulled pork. The smokedburger was a standard burger, the patty looks machined formed - that's not to say it's bought in bulk or something (I don't know) - just not an "OMG AMAZING" burger. The sweet potatoe fries were fantastic, well seasoned and some nice use of larger salt flakes. The Cucumber Salad was interesting, basically cucumber and onion in a quick pickle - probably wouldn't order it again, but it wasn't bad. The menu isn't huge, but its perfect ok to focus on what you do best. While we were there primarily for the food, we did get the Ely-ade drinks. They were quite tasty and would certainly enjoy again. Rockwood has a full bar, so you can get just about any drink you want. The prices for their signature cocktails are also quite reasonable. This is probably a great place to bring kids. They can get hot dogs, hamburgers, mac and cheese... all the staples. And the adults can partake in the finer fixings from the bar. Everyone was very nice, the kept the place well bussed. No complaints.

When you go in, be prepared to order food at the counter and drinks at the bar - no table service.
