Come for the railfanning, stay for the history. I first learned about Harpers Ferry, WV while sourcing stock footage for work. I came across the same clip in a rail safety ad, which made me look up directions to Harpers Ferry from DC. The historic park/town is served by the very MARC trains that pass outside my DC window each afternoon. You can describe Harpers Ferry as *deceptively* close because it's a 90 minute train ride, with planes flying into Dulles close enough to make out the airline. Looking for hotels there, Stonehouse Bed & Breakfast was the first that came up, with great reviews. Chris was very helpful and responsive via text and email. I booked the Top Room, which was $170 for a night including taxes. The quaint B&B has three accessible floors, as the family naturally lives onsite. The first floor is the main entrance with the common/dining areas, and the patio overlooking Maryland Heights and the Potomac/Shenandoah Rivers. The second floor has more rooms, one with a full balcony. And the third floor is the Top Room, with windows overlooking each side of the vintage building. If you Google pictures of Harpers Ferry, Stonehouse is in nearly all of the shots, since the balconies are front and center of the skyline. The town itself is like a real life snow globe. But the B&B, the litany of museums, eateries and shoppes around it, as well as the train station directly across the street make it an overall ideal place to stay, be it for hiking, or for something else: A love of trains is what brought me to Stonehouse, so take note that rail traffic can be heavy in certain times of the day. But the light rumbles also helped put me to sleep in the already soft, cozy bed. A container of water was provided, and while glasses should have been cleaned of dust first, it was still a really nice touch. The room also had playing cards, ear plugs, plenty books and a whole lounge chair. Checkin was a simple set of instructions at the door with my name on it, with checkout simply being your absence at the appropriate time. In my case, I only booked an overnight stay, getting in at 8pm and leaving around 6:30am, with checkout/checkin being the traditional 11am/4pm. While I didn't stay for complementary breakfast, I did catch a stellar sunrise between the mountains, as well as nature footage from the neighboring park. All of that to say, I definitely look to return to Stonehouse B&B later this year. read more

This was my first time at a true B&B, but Chris and his wife were phenomenal! The house is so cute and decorated well and Chris came each morning to make us breakfast. Ask him about his French toast - it's absolutely amazing! Chris was so nice and patient with my boyfriend and I with our questions and he was so personable! We came in the dead of winter and honestly had such a great time. We had plenty of heat and never even felt the cold or snow! read more

Very clean and cute b&b right in the lower town of Harpers Ferry, exactly where you want to be for local sightseeing! Chris is very responsive, helpful, and friendly, we really enjoyed sharing breakfast with him and other guests! The Stonehouse suite is perfect for 2, very comfortable and spacious with a private entrance and enough room to hang out in a private space. Bathroom is clean and spacious as well, soaps and towels provided. King bed is very comfortable (perfect firmness) with nice pillows. The parking spot that comes with the room is clutch as parking in the area is a nightmare. We left a personal item behind and Chris was kind enough to hold it for us until we could return! I almost don't even want to tell you about this place because I want to keep it as a hidden little gem all for myself. We spent 3 nights in the Top Floor Room. Cute and quiet for the most part. Of course you will hear the trains but that's harpers ferry, you'll get used to it in no time. This place is what they call a doily free environment and god did I love that. I've stayed at too many foo-foo grandma style B&B's and they are just weird. I felt at home at the Stonehouse. Chris and Leisel are great Hosts and I was ever impressed with the breakfasts. Chris cooks from the heart and from his Grandmothers recipes and I think that's pretty cool. All in all our time spent there was memorable and I would highly recommend a visit if you want to get out of the city, do a little hiking and relax. read more

A charming inn perfectly located in the heart of the historic area. Scenic strolls are right around the corner and restaurants are available along the street; once you have parked around back you can settle in and relax and explore. The old house is beautifully and imaginatively restored. Each room has its own character. Mine, on the top floor, had a marvelous view of trains, cliffs and river. The hosts maintain a good balance, allowing privacy but available to answer questions and provide a pleasant breakfast. read more

Exceeded my expectations and beyond! Gorgeous location and wonderfully accommodating hosts!

I loved to wake up and walk down stairs to join Chris in the kitchen each morning as he prepared breakfast for the folks staying at Stonehouse. I'd cradle a cup of coffee; watching the chickens from the second floor kitchen-table window; and listening to Chris share his experience in Harpers Ferry; the local business; and the farming community surrounding Harpers Ferry. My wife and I would then tuck into a delicious breakfast--either simple fresh eggs, bacon, and melon; or a stack of griddle cakes, with berry compote, yogurt and granola. Each breakfast gave us the energy for a bike ride, hike, or long walk along the river. My wife and I can't wait to return to Stonehouse at Harpers Ferry. read more

I was passing in a bike trip and was attracted by 2 things: 1) its in lower HF so I didn't have to get my bike up the daunting precipice & the owners market it as "doily free." 3.5 Stars First the positives. Location, location, location. Doesn't get any better than this. Smack dab in Harper's Ferry - cobblestone foot paths, greenery, trees, nestled among restaurants, shops, mountain and river views, so beautiful and relaxing. Our room was small, but big enough and our hallway bathroom had a wonderful claw foot tub. Chris was nice and his breakfasts were filling. I wished there was the Lactaid milk that I requested. After breakfast one morning, my hubby had a horrible bout of.. you know what. Also, the parking entrance is around the back - not much of a walk, but in the dark in HF; it gets kinda creepy. I wish the host was there to greet us when we arrived, but instead we were greeted by a note, taped to their door. No ice for our beverages or for the jug of tap in our room, since their ice maker wasn't working. Our bed sagged in the middle, though the sheets were very soft. Breakfast was nothing fancy, but did keep us full during the start of our day. read more

I can't recommend this B&B enough. Location is perfect - right across from the train station (don't worry it's not loud, I am a very light sleeper and did not wake up at all.) Our room was recently renovated with an awesome private balcony - It was the right mix of a rustic look with updated amenities (great new shower and super comfortable bed.) Had a restful getaway at the Stonehouse. Stayed on top floor with in-suite bath. Comfortable bed and fun architecture. Chris was friendly and kept us satisfied with coffee and hot breakfasts. Our stay at Stonehouse B&B plays a very important part in my husband and my journey from Pittsburgh to D.C. First, the amenities: for those who are biking the C&O, this place has a good spot to store the bikes as well as a hose to wash bikes off, which was particularly important after a day of mucking through the mud and climbing over fallen trees due to the recent flooding which took place in the area. The room we stayed in was large and beautifully upgraded - still a work-in-progress, but mostly finished and very beautifully decorated. We also had a private deck which we could use to leave our dirty things as well as enjoy people-watching. The location is ideal - in the middle of the town with all the shops and restaurants. Parking is available if a car is involved in your trip. Perhaps the most meaningful act though was Liesel's willingness to help us through a near trip-ending problem. Due to part of the trail being closed off due to damages from recent flooding, the lack of an established detour, and the cost of a shuttle, my husband and I were almost forced to abandon finishing the C&O. As we were talking to Liesel after perhaps one of the most restful nights of our trip at his B&B, he graciously offered to throw our bikes, gear, and selves into his truck and drive us to the end of the trail closure so that we could continue on! This was, of course, after he fed us a hearty breakfast made up of fresh fruit (and the best melon I have ever tasted), eggs, sausage patties, English muffins, and potatoes. Therefore, I must say that I would 10/10 recommend this place to any friends, family, or cyclists who are navigating through the C&O. read more

The other review on this page says it all! All I will add is that my husband and I stayed here the day after our wedding. We aren't taking a honeymoon until later in the year, but we did want to spend 24 hours in a relaxing, romantic environment before returning to our normal lives. This was PERFECT. The bed and breakfast was beautiful and care-free, and the surrounding area was gorgeous. Chris served us the same casserole that the other reviewer on this page mentioned - he said it was his grandma's recipe - and it was great! We also sat outside. Sitting there with the sun shining, good home-made food, the friendly dog Cane running around, and my new husband by my side... it was my favorite breakfast yet :) read more

We had a fantastic time at Stonehouse! My wife and I spent two nights here last weekend, and we were really impressed. The place is very charming and sets itself apart from other B&Bs in Harpers Ferry as the ONLY one in the lower part of town. This is key because everything in the town is in close walking distance, including the historic Civil War-era museums and exhibits. If you're into outdoors-y things, there are tons of walking and hiking trails with beautiful mountain top views of Harpers Ferry and the confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers. We stayed in the Blue Room, which was great. Not over-decorated the way some B&Bs can be. The free wi-fi was a nice touch- a great perk to have if you decide to spend some time in your room. The proprietor Chris and his Katrina rescue dog Cane were great hosts. Chris used to be a photojournalist, so he's full of great stories of places he's been. We really enjoyed chatting with him over breakfast, which he prepared from scratch every morning (make sure he makes his sausage and egg casserole at least once- you'll be glad you did). We're definitely coming back. We're already checking our calendars for early 2012. If you're in the DC area, Harpers Ferry is deceptively close and a perfect spot for a weekend getaway. I stayed here for two nights back in October with my parents. Unfortunately, our visit coincided with the government shutdown so none of the historical sites were open. We were unable to cancel the reservation (paid in advance, I think) so decided to make the most of it. We did walk over to the confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers and explored the nearby C&O canal tow path but that was about it. We arrived in the dark during a heavy rain. When we found what we thought was the B&B, we called Chris. He came out and helped us remove our luggage from the car and then told my father to park in the back. Stone house is located on a one-way street and it was also dark and raining pretty hard so if I were he I would have probably accompanied my guest to the parking area behind the house on the adjacent street. He showed us to our rooms (gray and blue) and then asked when we wanted breakfast. When my mom said 9 (which was during the breakfast hours listed on the website), he said he had "things to do." She thought it was a bit odd since he was the proprietor of this inn and we were paying guests. Chris did a beautiful job restoring the old house. The bedrooms, bathroom, and common areas are very clean, cozy, and tastefully-decorated. There are space heaters and air conditioning available. The house is old so sound carries. For example, when the other couple staying in the attic room walked around in their room or talked in the breakfast room, I could hear every word as if I were down there. Again, this is to be expected in an old building. Also, the train station is very close and the train whistles blow several times a night. I am a light sleeper so this woke me up every time. It's just part of the charm. Chris and his girlfriend, Liesel, prepared a homemade breakfast each morning. He was accommodating of my need for a vegan meal with oatmeal and fruit. My parents enjoyed pancakes, eggs, and bacon. I'm not sure if we seemed weird or what but he did not engage in conversation as he did with the other guests. The other two couples staying in the attic were there for just a night while on a bicycle trip along the length of the C&O. As a result, we did not quite feel at home and for that I removed a star. The resident rescue dog, whose name I'm blanking on, was the best part of the stay. He is a sweetie and gets a star of his own! read more

This place is about as good as it gets if you're looking for a place to stay in Harper's Ferry. It just opened this past summer, and it's obvious that the proprietor, Chris, has put a lot of blood, sweat, and tears into it. Every room is charming, impeccably clean, well-appointed, and comfortable; our room was no exception. Each room has its own color theme, and all of the furniture and decorations are exceptionally well-chosen to convey that theme. Chris himself is a kind, gracious, and fun host, and he was full of great advice and stories. His dog Cane is sweet and friendly. You also can't beat the location; it's just steps from the train station, all of the main historical attractions (including the Shenandoah/Potomac observation point), and the Appalachian trail. There's lots of great shopping as well as plenty of dining options within a 2-5 minute walk of the B&B. It's great to be able to stop by in your room after a day of hiking and walking around town to freshen up before heading back out for dinner, without having to head a couple miles back out of town to do so. Chris has a couple of parking spots right behind the B&B, so you can easily park (and leave) your car in a part of town where parking is typically a scarce commodity. Of course, I would be remiss if I didn't mention the fantastic breakfast he made for us, a superb casserole of sausage, egg, cheese, and bread, accompanied by juice, coffee, and fresh-cut fruit, served sitting outside on the covered patio in front of the house. Don't just take my word for it, book a room at the Stonehouse next time you're in Harpers Ferry...you won't be disappointed. read more

I'm a little late writing this review, but I am so thrilled to be writing it. My husband and I stayed here for 6 nights on our honeymoon the first week in June. We were a little nervous staying in a bed and breakfast for the first time but our fears were quickly forgotten upon our arrival! We stayed in the top floor room and really loved it. It was spacious yet cozy, and the private bathroom was a plus. The bed was so comfortable, too! Chris and Leslie were very accommodating in spite of the crazy week they were having; we found out when we got there that they were getting married themselves the last day of our stay!! They offered to have someone come cook for us our last day as they'd be at their wedding but we declined. However, Chris' breakfasts were fabulous, especially the the pancakes with berries and yogurt. That was by far our favorite! Overall we loved Harper's Ferry and we loved The Stonehouse. We recommend them to EVERYONE!! We will definitely be back!! read more

Don't come here if you want everything perfectly 'holiday inn' - the charm is the odd things about this old place that make it unique and interesting! My gf and I stayed here last summer for two nights and loved this B&B. Chris and Liesel are great hosts, they recommend things to do in the area and were very sociable. The french toast is to die for, and the fresh percolated coffee was a huge plus. We stayed in the top room which is really nice and has it's own private bathroom/shower. The other rooms also looked amazing with quaint themes, though they both share a bathroom down the hall. Overall we really enjoyed our stay and would definitely go and back and recommend other to visit. Parking is also really convenient as its right near all the attractions. As for things to do around town, there are hiking trails near by, fishing in the river(some hike further up the Potomac at the dam), and a flea market a town over. FYI-pay in cash for a slightly cheaper rate. And be warned not to go to Harpers Ferry during a holiday weekend as the place is swarming with weekend warrior tourists. Also, there aren't many place to eat in town though that has nothing to do with this B&B. read more

After weeks of traveling on business the Stonehouse B&B was the perfect stopover. Upon arrival I was greeted with warm tea and a hot wood burning stove, an excellent revival from the chilly weather and a long week. My room was warm, inviting and my cloud-like bed was no less than a heavenly experience. After a beautiful sleep the morning sun coming up over the magical town of Harpers Ferry greeted me. Breakfast was a garden fresh omelet, hot home fried potatoes, golden-crisped English muffins and steaming coffee. Chris had every detail covered. He is also very knowledgeable about the town and is happy to provide you with intellectually stimulating conversation or leave you to your own devices. The price is comparative to hotels in the area and the experience was absolutely remarkable. Workspace and Wi-Fi are available. Breakfast included.
