Buchanan's Station was built by John Buchanan and other families. A station is a fortified settlement and since several Native American tribes considered this their hunting grounds, violent conflicts befall this outpost. Many if the original settlers were killed, including John Buchanan himself. By 1787, Buchanan's son, also named John, was in charge of the station. In 1792, several hundred Creek, Cherokee, and Shawnee warriors attacked the settlement. At the time there was only a small group of families living here with about twenty men to defend it. Yet these twenty men held off the attack. It was said that Buchanan's wife, Sarah, kept the men supplied with black powder and musket balls. At the time, she was pregnant and the first of their thirteen children would be born eleven days after the battle. We need to remember these brave men and women who ventured into unknown and often hostile territory, seeking a better life. We must preserve these places and the memories of such people.

The mounds were between Little Harpeth River and a branch of the Boiling Spring. When the four burial mounds were excavated in 1895 and again in 1920 artifacts were found dating back to the Mississippian period of indian culture in Tennessee. Relics from the second excavation were placed in the Smithsonian Institution in Washington. The ceremonial mound by Boiling Spring Academy was left undisturbed."
