Whenever we read about a new venue opening in Brisbane, in a news article, our curiosity is immediately piqued. More so, when that venue has to do with food! We are referring to the Stokehouse Brisbane, one of the new comers to Brisbane's Southbank fine dining precinct. Having officially opened in late October 2011, we had been looking forward to finally experiencing what Stokehouse Brisbane had to offer. We decided on dinner.
Stokehouse Brisbane is located just underneath the Goodwill Bridge in Sidon St, South Bank, perfectly situated by the river. From the outside, you can tell there has been a lot of thought into the design of the restaurant, modern, elegant, yet still retaining a relaxed feeling. If the Stokehouse was a girl, she would be Emmanuelle Chriqui in a Yellow Ruffle dress, and If I was single, I would've asked her out on a date right there and then! Then I remembered to never judge a book by its cover. It was time to go inside and sample the food.
Once inside, we were breaking our necks as we looked around the restaurant. The beautiful interior setting, a combination of indoor and outdoor, high ceilings, (there's a second level), and the coup de grace; the sweeping views of the river across the CBD. The Goodwill bridge is also visible, arching to the other side of the river, a reminder of your unique location. All of this added to the ambience of Stokehouse, and despite its "fine dining" tag, it certainly felt very relaxed, and familiar, like an old friend visiting from out of town. Stokehouse, so far, was hitting all the spots!
At the table, service was professional and friendly, an offer of water, a wine list, and most importantly the menu. We ordered 2 glasses of the Pinot Grigio to start, whilst deciding on what to have for the evening. The menu is uncomplicated, and appeal to a wide variety of taste buds (http://stokehousebrisbane.com.au/restaurant/)
Although we had a fair idea of what we wanted, the waitress did a great job in making the Mooloolaba Crab salad special with curry mayonnaise, apple jelly avocado mousse sound appealing, which my other half promptly ordered as Entree. I ordered the Crispy Skinned Lannoch Farm Quail, with gorgonzola polenta, caramelised pear. Service was on point, attentive (with our water being regularly filled up by our waitress), and very quick, as it wouldn't have been more than 10 minutes, and our Entrees were ready.
Being a "fine dining" restaurant, the portions were small as expected, but very well presented. The quail was perfectly crisp (and de-boned), and the flavours of the polenta fusing with the caramelised pear on my tongue was like a subtle dance between a perfect couple. In a word, Yum! The Crab salad, was "nice" according to my partner in crime, but she was a little confused with the curry mayonnaise and apple jelly avocado mousse. The flavours were a little off the mark for her liking, or just not an acquired taste on her part, but still a very nice Entree.
Not long after, our Mains arrived. Free range duck breast, eggplant, cumin, date and Madeira reduction. My order was the Pan fried cone bay Barramundi, pencil leeks, artichoke puree, and herb nage. The moment we took a bite out of our respective orders, there was no need for talking, or even making any sound. Eyebrows slightly raised, and our eyes rolled back in unison as we breathed out, was all that was required to convey how beautiful our food tasted. The slight tangy taste of the artichoke puree combined perfectly with the creamy-buttery taste of the herb nage, which enveloped the clean and mild taste of the pan friend Barramundi. In similar fashion, the Duck, tender and flavourful, took my other half to the clouds. The madeira reduction was perfect in its saucy consistency, with its sweetness, enhanced by the dates, and yet ever so subtle, the earthy spicy taste of cumin, would reveal itself on one's palette. Combining all those elements with the Duck breast was brilliant. Compliments to the chef.
For Dessert we decided on "The Bomb" - a frozen white chocolate parfait with strawberry sorbet, toasted meringue. We also ordered some Baby cake with lemon meringue tart and vanilla crème brulee. Elegantly presented, we tucked into the dessert right away! The flavours exploded in our mouths as we combined the white chocolate with the strawberry sorbet, it was "The Bomb" indeed. It was a perfect last course to finish dinner with.
Service throughout the night, was impeccable. Our waitress was friendly, always available, and one felt "looked after" without being imposed on. We are big on service, and everything for this Sunday night dinner was perfect. From the location, the views, the venue itself, and of course the food! Stokehouse Brisbane certainly deserves all the accolades it came with and the Brisbane fine dining scene should feel lucky to have another venue of such high quality. We wholeheartedly recommend Stokehouse Brisbane. read more
