Reminds me a bit of the PATH trains in NYC/NJ except these subways are clean! Took the Metro the other day to get to the Jean-Talon market (great place) to wander around, eat, and pick up some fresh fruits to nosh on for breakfast in our room. Went from Sherbrooke station to Jean-Talon station. What struck me most were how clean their stations are. Not one piece of garbage or paper on the platforms, or on the tracks. The train cars were also very nice and clean. Clear announcements of each stop. Well lit. Trains come and go pretty frequently. There are even recycle bins on the platforms - hey NYC MTA take note! Kiosks to purchase tickets and manned booths if you need some help with directions. Pretty easy to understand the rail system here and the color designated lines. Not too bad on prices depending on the pass you need. Only drawback are that the trains are just not air conditioned enough. It was on but I prefer it much colder when it's 85 degrees out. Still, a nice way to get around the city and explore.

Convenient subway system. Service now extends all the way to Laval, which you can't beat. Fast. During normal hours, trains come by quite often, unlike other cities I could name. Clean. Once I asked a janitor (in English) how to buy a metro ticket, whereupon he directed me (in French) to a kiosk where I could buy bus tickets. At least he kept the station clean. Luckily I was able to call my lifeline for directions on how to properly buy tickets. Bonus: They weren't expensive. Can't speak for the buses, but I love not having to drive.

There is also under this bus terminal a subway station connecting to the Montreal subway network. From there there are , on a regular time schedule, buses connecting to downtown Montreal. A few years ago they have renovated most of the installation there which was, believe me, not a luxury but a necessity. Actually the renovation works where done only in the bus terminal. The wing where the subway is, still looks like 20 years ago! Unfortunately they are not planning any renovation works any time soon. At least now you can wait your bus in a covered and heated place. Before, in winter, you would litteraly freeze your ass outhere since the terminal is right next to the St-Lawrence River in a very windy spot! Inside the terminal there are various shops and restaurants to soften your wainting time. But I have to say that the ambiance is pretty "cold". It was really design only as a transit hub. A few years ago the Sherbrooke University opened a huge campus in an adjacent building. For the students this is great since it's very easy to get to the University with public transport. In short this terminal is really only a transportation hub and definitely not a place to enjoy a cup of coffee!

Because I do love public transit, I think it's important and beautiful and necessary and an epic feat of technological and social engineering. And in particular I love Montreal's metro system. And in particularist, I love De Castelnau. The station was inaugurated in 1986, but it doesn't suffer from the 80s overall design aesthetic. It was designed to refer to Italian architecture since it's positioned at the top of Little Italy. It was named after Rue De Castelnau which gets its name from the French general Édouard de Curières de Castelnau (1851-1944), who defended the French town of Nancy against the German army in 1916. It is lofty and bright and carved in warm beige stone - Travertine apparently. it features these amazing little vignettes carved into the stone of scenes inspired by Jean Talon Market by Quebecois artist Jean-Charles Charuest. Charuest was a local artisan gifted at carving these gorgeous birds out of semi-precious stone, and there's a delicacy and vivid sense of life in all his scenes that reminds you of someone who thinks a lot about how to render birds in stone.

Under normal circumstances, my parents would take a taxi from the airport and it wouldn't be a huge concern for me, but with the COVID pandemic, I was especially worried and preferred to have them travel in a larger car with more space between them and the driver. Unfortunately, I didn't think of the idea until an HOUR before their expected arrival, I frantically searched and called 6 limo services and even the Montreal airport info desk. They were all busy, already had limited drivers due to the pandemic, or didn't even answer that was until I reached Mimo Limousine! Nash, the owner of Mimo, answered and was immediately understanding, accommodating, prompt, and polite. He had no problem finding a driver, getting to the airport on such short notice and even had a "meet and greet" service where Robert (the designated driver) held a personalized sign at the luggage/customs door for my parents to see. The car was clean and big, and although I would have preferred a car with a divider, my parents found it very spacious and my mom chatted with Robert the whole way back. My parents do not speak French very well, so it was fantastic that Robert is bilingual. Since my parents don't have a mobile phone, another aspect that I was very happy with was that I was texted that my parents had been picked up. It was a big relief that things turned out better than I had expected! The end total (+ tax and tips) came out to be CAD$162. It was a bit pricey for a ride to Westmount, but I am very happy with the overall process and service.

Usually I stay at five star luxury hotels (and fly first class) and I always have the concierge arrange all my limousine and airport transfers so I can be assured of two things: 1. Absolute reliability because the hotel (and its business/reputation) is on the line. 2. Bespoke service and state of the art fleet of cars. As a consequence, I get what I want at a premium price. This time, a made the very smart decision to contact Mimo Limousine and deal with Nash, the consummate professional, directly. First of all, the service was prompt and courteous and incredibly professional. All my questions about pricing, types of vehicles, estimated travel times were answered immediately and professionally. These were rather expensive rides as the distance was significant and travel time exceeded two hours. However, if I had used the services of a five star hotel (think Four Seasons), the price was about 35% - 40% more. I cannot overstate how reliable the service was: I cannot tolerate tardiness and the drivers were early. Safety comes first with Nash and his clients and he makes it clear how important that is. Since the two plus hour ride was straight up into the mountains, this was a relief. After all, my son was the sole occupant in his way to a skiing holiday with his university buddies. The really nice part about Mimo and Nash personally: he stayed in contact with me so I could relax: he texted me when my son was en route, he texted me when my son arrived at his destination. (This way I didn't have to text my son to know he'd arrived, etc). Nash also provided my son with the driver's info so they could communicate. Nash was patient, kept all his promises and charged a fair price for excellent service. Please, do yourselves a favor if you always travel premium class, and use Mimo for any of your ground transportation needs in Montreal and its environs.
