Every time I go to Montreal, I park the car and I walk or take the metro everywhere. The metro offers many options like single ticket, ticket for evenings, ticket for weekends, ticket for a whole week, for three days, for a month, etc. This allows for customers to be able to maximize the savings based on their expected needs. Excellent fare system and excellent trains....they are clean, on time and they run very frequently. A great way to explore the city. read more

Everythings just so old and Increasing price every year, repeated strikes by spoiled employees and still no investments for improvements of infrastructure or renovation. Unbelievably old stations with dim lights, everywhere so dark, dirty and cracked walls, no installation of elevators (only some stations) same old tickets machines from 30 years ago and no bilingual announcement at any place of STM which is very unfriendly and unhelpful for tourists. Aw camel poo! I really wanted to give this a four star review, but I will have to give it three. Why? Pros -Trains are fast and comfortable. Plenty of room for all. -The OPUS card is super affordable. -The system is easy to navigate. -Stations and trains are fairly clean. Cons -Not many countdown clocks until the next train. Lots of guessing. -Station floors are very slippery. -Not many kiosks to purchase tickets. -Surprisingly, all station announcements are in French. To me, there are two generations of mass transit systems. First generation: -New York City Subway -London Underground -Chicago "El" -Boston T Second Generation: -Washington Metro -BART -Vancouver SkyTrain -Montreal Metro The difference lies in a few things. Stations are not as conducive. They are meant to act like facilitators, not the actual driving force. The systems clearly have a more new feel to them. Lastly, they act as supplements for the vehicle, instead of the older systems which basically this system is the vehicle. It takes you wherever you want and you are before really too far from any station. This one is a success of a second generation system, but it needs more work. Skips schedule times happened multiple times. Had to uber instead to be on time. Service lacking letting people know if they skip a scheduled time. Secondly with less than 1 min left bus won't come pick up people who wait in cold until the last second. read more

I think they're horrible and unsafe. The bus drivers sexually harass women. Many times over the years If get On the bus and the drivers would give me murderous looks or get passed off cause I wouldn't say Hi to them. I asked 1 driver for a transfer and he put it near his crotch then handed it to me. I declined it. One bus had a condom attached to.the farebox. There was a complaint by a woman sitting in her car that a bus driver stuck his head out the bus window and made a lewd sexual gesture at her with his tongue. One bus driver seemed really out of it when driving the.bus. He kept singing very loudly.and some of the things he said we're "No place to hide when I'm near you"/" Big brown eyes" "I need a lover that will last". Also after I'd get On the bus the driver would violently jerk the bus back and forth like they were trying to get me to fall. One time I hit a pole on the bus and my sunglasses broke. Another time the sudden acceleration three me to the bus floor and I also sustained injury to my hand when I twisted it grabbing a pole to prevent falling. The bus drivers also don't pull over to the sidewalk to let passengers off and it's very hard to get off on the sidewalk. My legs are not 6 by long. I saw 1 passenger jumping from bus to sidewalk. These bus drivers act like thugs. Lots of creepy characters in the buses too. Better to ride a bicycle or walk. Complaints to STM generally fall on deaf ears. They rarely take action. Typo my legs aren't 6 feet longlong the drivers would get pissed off cause I wouldn't say Hi to them. Another time the sudden acceleration would throw me to the bus floor. What can I say about the STM, formerly called the STCUM? It's the public transportation network in Montreal. It includes buses and the Metro (subway), there are no streetcars and it does not include the commuter trains (Exo, formerly AMT). When I was a university student in Montreal, I got around exclusively by foot and the STM (I didn't have a car, I couldn't afford taxis, and there was no such thing as Uber or Lyft). The subway system (The Metro) is quite extensive with colour coded lines. There's the orange line that's shaped like a U and reminds me of the Yonge-University Line in Toronto's subway system. The other lines more or less run perpendicular to the orange line and they are the blue, green and yellow lines. I like that different metro stations have different looks and styles (like Toronto's subway stations), so really if you take the metro often enough, you know what station you're at by the appearance and you don't even have to look at the signs (unlike the light rail stations along the Confederation Line in Ottawa, where I live now, all stations look the same, so boring). The bus system is good, but admittedly I rarely took the bus and used the metro more. This review is for Pre-Covid times. I have not used the STM since Covid so cannot comment on how they have dealt with the Pandemic. read more

They just closed the door for the train while I let others go ahead of me for space and then when I went to the ticket booth to make a complaint I was sighed at for stating I don't speak French then I call the number on the card that was given to make complaints and it was closed, lived here my whole life and they've only gotten worse so I'd say don't use it and BANN THE STM, I made this yelp account to voice my opinion because you can't anywhere else, they got it blocked. read more

I never take the bus because it is incredibly unreliable. I always have to pay for a Uber instead. The metro is better, but when it is not working, the service is too chaotic. The employees are either incompetent and/or agressive. I chose to live downtown at a walking distance from my job because I can't stand STM's service. I only take public transport when it is absolutely necessary. I have missed many opportunities (work, events, appointments, etc) because STM was unreliable. They offer no compensation when they fail to deliver any service. Je ne prends jamais l'autobus parce qu'il est incroyablement peu fiable. Je dois toujours payer pour un Uber à la place. Honestly I think the Montreal Metro is dope. A lot of people complain about it, I'm sure, but those people probably don't know what they have. Coming from the US, you're lucky if you can afford to live in a city with a good subway system that you would actually use. Montreal's subway system is great and connects a lot of important parts of the city. It's not super super cheap, but not bad either. An Opus card will run you about $6 CAD and a two-ride refill costs about another $6 CAD. The trains run on rubber wheels, like Mexico City's, so they're nice and smooth. Not hard to navigate, either. read more

Weekends are a hassle to travel!!! I work on Saturdays and what would take me 20 min getting to work during the week takes me almost an hour on weekends. I take the green and orange line, every time I get off of the green line to connect to the orange line, I have to wait 15 min for the next train to come. both lines are never synchronized for an effective transition for travellers. STM should notice that the number of people travelling on Saturdays is increasing and therefore should increase the frequency at which trains should be passing. I give 1 star due to either STM having mismanagement on this issue or they are just cheap for potential budget cuts. read more

That one quebecois woman who drives a 141 bus early in the morning has a horrible attitude towards the passengers. Just this morning, I ran up to that bus and got in-line like everyone else but as soon as it was my turn to get in, she closed the door on me and immediately drove away, leaving me dumbfounded on the street. That wasnt even the first time she had an unlikable attitude. She often yells at the passengers to go in the back even when we're all pressed together and even sometimes refuses to open doors to let us go or even drive if we don't go back. Overall, the way some bus drivers behave is utterly unacceptable, 1/5 service. read more

Reminds me a bit of the PATH trains in NYC/NJ except these subways are clean! Took the Metro the other day to get to the Jean-Talon market (great place) to wander around, eat, and pick up some fresh fruits to nosh on for breakfast in our room. Went from Sherbrooke station to Jean-Talon station. What struck me most were how clean their stations are. Not one piece of garbage or paper on the platforms, or on the tracks. The train cars were also very nice and clean. Clear announcements of each stop. Well lit. Trains come and go pretty frequently. There are even recycle bins on the platforms - hey NYC MTA take note! Kiosks to purchase tickets and manned booths if you need some help with directions. Pretty easy to understand the rail system here and the color designated lines. Not too bad on prices depending on the pass you need. Only drawback are that the trains are just not air conditioned enough. It was on but I prefer it much colder when it's 85 degrees out. Still, a nice way to get around the city and explore. read more

Convenient subway system. Service now extends all the way to Laval, which you can't beat. Fast. During normal hours, trains come by quite often, unlike other cities I could name. Clean. Once I asked a janitor (in English) how to buy a metro ticket, whereupon he directed me (in French) to a kiosk where I could buy bus tickets. At least he kept the station clean. Luckily I was able to call my lifeline for directions on how to properly buy tickets. Bonus: They weren't expensive. Can't speak for the buses, but I love not having to drive. read more

We got a 7 day pass for $31 and some change. Using the subway system and buses, we definitely made back our investment, seeing as Uber is definitely not cheaper (we were told there's a minimum $5 and change charge for using uber, so short jaunts for less than $5 is not cost effective...). And, besides, when amongst locals, live as the locals do! Our hostel was perfectly located. Several bus stops and the major Berri-UQAM subway station was a 2 minute walk out the doors. Train timing was good, we never had to wait more than 5-8 minutes for the next train. Very clean stops. Even the trains were clean and orderly. None of the profane tagging you see a lot of in NYC. Luckily, we managed to bypass the major parts of rush-hour, so the train cars were mostly not super packed with crowded platform stops. We were in town during the busiest week in Montreal's year, so some above-ground bus routes were closed due to street fairs. The stops were covered with bright orange "sleeves", with alternate/temporary new stops near by. We loved seeing the city while taking the bus! It was awesome to loose all sense of time, while gazing out the windows. My only negative is seating. No, not on the train, at the station stops. If you are elderly, have a bum leg, or are just exhausted from a long day of walking all over the city, there's no place to sit while waiting. Literally. **Sad face** One of the major nubs had a few benches and hand rails that you could lean against. Can I really complain, though? No. If I was a local, walking is a write of passage, so my legs would already be accustom to standing (instead of sitting in a car to drive everywhere). read more

Driving on Bombardier trying to cross Renaude Lapointe, I got cut off by the bus driver route 192 bus number 39-063 At about 12:15 pm May 24 2022. I had to slam on the brakes so that I would not get side swiped cause the driver was too busy looking at her cell phone to notice me, I saw her from her side mirror looking down at her phone while turning left to change lanes. The Société de transport de Montréal, otherwise known as the STM, is the public transportation system for the city of Montreal. While in town, the hubs and I used this as our way to get from one place to another, across town, zig-zagging our way through. The subway system is very straightforward, with clearly labeled signs; it is similar to London's and the DC's Metro system, where you need to just know the final destination for each of the lines to gauge which direction to go. There are four distinct colors: Orange (Montmorency to Cote-Vertu), Blue (Saint-Michel to Snowdon), Green (Honore-Beaugrand to Angrignon), and Yellow (Berri-UQAM to Longueuil-Universite-de-Sherbrooke). Transfers are at Berri-UQAM (for the Green, Orange, and Yellow), at Lionel-Groulx (for the Green and Orange), at Snowdon (for the Blue and Orange), and at Jean-Talon (for the Orange and Blue). The stops do not guarantee that it will be closest to your destination point, but the buses that run can help you make that trek a little less. Even with the buses, the signs are clearly labeled once you exit the Metro to know where the stops are located. Just note, however, that not all bus stops has the pick-up times listed, and all the bus signs do not designated the direction (west-/east-/south-/north-bound; you pretty need to have a good sense of direction or a GPS) and know when to pull the stop bell and exactly which stop to get off at. There are no maps on the buses, and no digital/announcement of which stops come next. The bus drivers are, on the most part, very friendly - they greet you and answers all your questions. Fares range from 1-, 2-, and 10-trips, unlimited evening and weekends, 1-day, 3-days, a weekly pass, a monthly pass, a 4-month pass, and a group pass (for 1 adult and a maximum of 10 children). The OPUS card is when you purchase the unlimited week and up fares, and it's actually made of plastic with a chip - this is where you can also refill. There is also a separate Aeroport P-E Trudeau (747) bus pass for $10, but your monthly, weekly regular, 1- and 3-day passes, unlimited weekend, and 4-month is accepted at no additional charge (just as long as you use within your time valid time frame). I was pretty impressed with the Métro in Montréal. Starting with the 747 bus from the airport, everything's included when you buy one of the $8 all-you-can-eat cards. Take the train from one station in centre-ville (French for downtown) out to the Stade Olympique and back. It's just $8. The trains were quite comfortable and while they weren't silent, they are very quiet compared to the New York Subway or the London Tube. I think this is because the trains have rubber wheels on a ceramic track, so there isn't the steel-on-steel squealing as the trains go around corners. Not much for air conditioning though. And a couple of stations had that lovely "urine" smell. Just don't touch anything and you'll be fine. read more

When I travel to Montreal for business I have the pleasure of staying in a company residence. The only downside is that the residence is quite a distance from the office downtown. That being said, the Metro is right around the corner in walking distance. The Metro in Montreal is very clean, with some pops of graffiti here and there. Its used heavily and if you hit it at morning or evening rush-hour you will be guaranteed to feel the pinch of standing room only. The cost is so much better than taking cabs - believe me, that's what I did on my first trip, and have avoided it since! Our stop does not go all the way to the office so once you arrive in town you just use your metro pass to hop on a bus and voila you'll find yourself at the front door of the office lickity split! My last trip gave me quite a bit of entertainment as the local pigeons lined up behind the yellow line along with us ... appearing to watch for an oncoming train! Too funny! (I grabbed a pic with the cell to prove it!) I'm a fan of the STM - both the Metro and the bus line! read more

I attempted to take the 747 @ Rene-Levesque and Bishop and was a cluster f___ if I ever seen one. Apparently, there's a STM rule where you can't get on bus if there's no room remaining in the luggage rack. Well on a Saturday afternoon, 3 buses passed us with the driver waiving everyone off. I read that STM is suffering from declining ridership due to Uber, etc. Well, why would anyone continue to ride STM if this is example of how they run an agency. read more

Almost want to give it 5 stars, but I'll go 4 stars for a couple of reasons: (1) there are really no provisions for Anglophones, though this wasn't a problem for me (2) a couple of stations are a little worn (3) the "per trip" price is a little high Let's move on to the good stuff. The Metro plan is awesome. Four lines connect all the important places in Montreal and have even been extended off the island to Laval (to the north), in addition to already hooking up to the South Shore at Longueuil. The service is frequent, the cars are fairly clean, and it feels safe, at any hour. Some interesting things: (1) if you are staying for a while, get a visitors pass. The 3-day pass is a bargain and is usable on the metro as well as the buses. You will notice that NO locals pay "per trip" -- they've all got some kind of a monthly pass they use (2) get used to the words "prochaine station" because that means "next station," followed by the station name announced in a "foreign" accent (3) Berri-UQAM is the main system station in the heart of the city and where THREE lines intersect (4) Lucien L'Allier, in my opinion, is the craziest station - I think it takes 4 escalators to get from the street level to the train platform (5) they've introduced Bus 747 for the airport. It costs about $8 and your 3-day card works on this bus as well. Have fun in Montreal. STM is a great system! read more

Haven't used the bus system, so this is 100% based on the subway... The good: 1. The ticket system. Much better than TTC's wack ass token system. 2. The places it goes. Very useful. For a tourist at least. 3. The trains are pretty clean and frequent. The bad: 1. At leat a few of the stations are dark and on the ghetto side. Actually I think this has to do with the time period the stations were built (the mid to late 60s). 2.The seating arrangement in the trains isn't that great. If you took the seating arrangement and stations from Toronto, you'd have yourself a 5-star subway system. read more

In terms of Canadian transit systems that I've ridden so far, this is definitely my favourite. The changeurs (ticket collectors) and drivers are much nicer than what I'm accustomed to in the GTA (they actually help). The best thing though, is their OPUS card. I'd purchase one regardless of whether you're staying for a few days or a few weeks; it's a quick refill process in the fare machines, and it only costs $6. Best thing is, you can use it again for up to 4 years, so if you come back to Montreal again, no need to spend money on transfers and their Occasionelles! If you're not coming back, it's a nice souvenir, as not many transit systems here have magnetic cards anyway. If I have one issue with the system, their Metro should be a bit more frequent off peak; I think 6-8 minutes is too long of a wait for a system its size. There were instances where I waited an unreasonable amount of time for a train, when I was expecting only about a 5 minute wait or so. read more

i love riding subways and busses and you don't realize how convenient public transit is until you move to a place that is car centric like me. Its relatively clean and appears to run mostly on time - compared to SF Muni which always under construction and delayed. As a New Yorker, I felt like a god-damn savage in this organized Subway system. On escalators, people who do not plan to climb the steps stand on the right en masse, in military-attention style. I was standing in the middle and I got a look of "Boy, you aint from here, are ya?" Coming from a bigger city, the Montreal Subway system is extremely easy and intuitive to understand and navigate. And they don't have any of the NYC Artsy-fartsy kooks who come on the train playing their ukuleles or doing acrobatic maneuvers on the hand-rails of the train. Very peaceful and normal. read more

Bus drivers in Montreal are extremely rude, especially bus 51. I traveled with baby and stroller, never once did they lower the front of the bus to facilitate even if I made a request. They just watch me awkwardly carry the stroller with a baby on it to board and exit the bus. Vancouver has way much better bus services. read more
