The bad: Can get busy and crowded sometimes. Has a lot of homeless people hanging/sleeping there. You can easily get lost and go out the wrong exit. I love Bonaventure. When you know where to get out, and where to go, it is a time saver.

There are also many tables and chairs where you can eat and wait for your train. After asking questions to the VIA workers at our gate, we discovered we were entitled to hang out in the VIA Lounge (too bad we did t know earlier as we could have had our coffee there). When it was boarding time, we were escorted to the escalators (non-business class had to walk down stairs with their luggage) that took us to the platform. Once we began the ride in our reserved seats, we were given warm towels, fed lunch (similar to an airline meal), served beverages (including wine), served chocolates....what a way to travel! This station, like many others, was opened in 1966 as a much-needed system ... for not only the citizenry but for the stampede of tourists who would come for the 1967 World's Fair and 1976 Summer Olympics. It ain't a pretty station, a bit dated in its design, but Métro Saint-Laurent sure gets the job done! First, it is located in the Ville-Marie arrondissement (borough) in the heart of the city. While there are a zillion ways to get from place-to-place in the city, Métro Saint-Laurent puts you a 5 minute walk to one of the epicenters of North American comedy: Just for Laughs. It's a 15 minute walk to Old Montreal and within a few blocks from Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM). It's also a short walk to Notre-Dame Basilica (15 minutes), MAC Musée d'art contemporain de Montréal (5 min.), Quartier des Spectacles (a block), and Parterre du Quartier des spectacles (less than a block). This side-platform station serves the green line -- and is one stop away from Métro's epicenter, Berri-UQAM (home of the green, orange, and yellow lines). You'll find trains riding every 5 minutes or so, so you don't necessarily have to sprint to catch your ride. I also like some of their cool features. They have a 38-bike Bixi dock (Montréal's bike-share program). You'll also find some cool murals on the platform by the late, great Claude Vermette. If you have to get to downtown Montréal, I highly recommend coming and going via Métro Saint-Laurent! Despite being a Saturday afternoon, the train was standing room only. The signage at Metro Rosemont was easy to follow, maybe even easier than Washington, DC and New York City. The metro is a great and affordable way to move around the city. Also, I imagine it is really great to take the metro during the cold, winter months since it felt a bit warm in April. I recommend that you take the metro when visiting Montreal.

By arriving at the Vancouver train station early, I was easily in time to board the VIA Rail Canada…read moretrain to Jasper, which would depart Vancouver at around 3 p.m. and arrive in Jasper the following day at around 11 a.m. Jessica introduced herself as our cabin attendant and explained meals and how to get the benefit of our cabin details. My roomette had a bed that would fold down from the upper part of the cabin and included an en suite toilet. Showers were available one car down, and we would have our meals in the dining room as part of the fare. Because I travel solo, I asked Jessica if she would go the extra mile and bring my dinner and the next day's breakfast to my cabin - and happily, she agreed. For agreeing, I tipped her $20 and tipped $20 for dinner and again for breakfast; and I tipped her $40 upon departing in Jasper. Jessica was thoughtful, helpful, and knew how our trip would proceed. Note that nothing in the rail's documentation suggested that meal service to our cabin was a part of the deal - I'm grateful for Jessica's willingness to spare me from having to take my meals with others. Upon boarding, I explored the various cars of the train: there was a meet-and-greet reception with small bites and prosecco, the scenic view from the dome cars were exactly as beautiful as advertised, and we made the trip right on schedule. I would reiterate what Jessica told all of us in the cars she was responsible for: if one person introduced waste into the toilets that clogged the works, all our toilets would be clogged. That happened on the morning of my departure, but fortunately there were toilets in the common areas of the train cars that continued to operate despite the blockage.

On our most recent trip, the train hit a tree on the tracks, and we were delayed by 2 hours and 20 minutes. The conductor kept us up to date the entire time, giving a detailed plan of how it was being handled, and ordered us all pizza to deliver to the train when we finally arrived at the next station. Anyone who missed a transfer was either shuttled or taxi'd to their destination. And we were all offered a 50% travel credit for the inconvenience. Amazing customer service!!
