Coeur d'Alene Marathon - Flew in to pick her up!

Coeur d'Alene Marathon

The amount of work it takes to be a very mid runner is hysterical! In all honesty though I haven't…read moreput much "training"' into a marathon in a very, very long time. Every time I sign up for something and say "this is it, it's time to actually get ready for this" - life lifes! and I find myself nearing the start line saying something like, "just crank this mary out today and have fun- enjoy the course". That's what happened with Coeur d'Alene! I registered on 2/18 after making a rather large life decision and said this is it, I'll train out and really pour into this prior to MDW. A rather enormous training period for someone who can roll out of bed on a Sunday and jog a marathon but life did its thing and I got side tracked with some large life choices and the "training" took a back seat. I thought I'd have to scrap this race all together but when it turned out I could make it work after a relocation and months of packing, followed by a couple of weeks of moving- I bought a new flight, revised my hotel dates to only come in to pick up my bib, run and make it happen! Despite feeling fairly worn out from the weeks leading up I was so excited and thankful to be in town to participate. This course is stunning. It reminded me a little of one of my other fav marathon courses (Cape Cod). There were several pacers but only a 3:30 pacer and a 4:30 pacer near my times, and 3:30 is still a dream for snail marathoner like me. I knew 4:30 would be rather conservative but also the best bet for where I was at to help ensure I remain injury free. Shawn the 4:30 pacer was amazing!! His energy and positive, fun vibe made this run even more special. I love when ultra runners pace marathons because I feel like such a clown the second I even dare think I'm feeling the least bit fatigued, knowing they'll run 75+ more miles for a run. They really put things in perspective and help marathons feel like a 20min 5k in your local park. I'd highly recommend this marathon if you like small races with beautiful, tranquil, serene vibes. Everyone called this the hottest day of the year but with recently moving to TX 80s felt dreamy! All in all I still boarded my flight feeling like I'd run BPN Last Man Standing not a measly 26.2. I told myself shake it off and have been getting around fairly nicely since. Lastly, about a month ago I remember writing "may bib 261 find me at a marathon check in". The thing about life is, you can't wait around for any one thing to find you- you need to go out and get it. I was given bib 164 and figured I'm less than 100 from what I want. I got back in line, took a chance and asked for it. To my most grateful surprise, sitting in another box it was brought over and swapped out for me. If you don't know the history behind this bib, go educate yourself! Can't wait to run this marathon again! I think I'll plan on training and running it next MDW for time ;)

I had to quit the racetrack.... The word of the week is sexism and Finley Speedway is ran by sexist…read moremen. This had happened many times and im done. Cameron and I were very excited to work the speedway this summer. Willingly giving up our weekends and telling our current employer that this was a commitment we wanted to keep. Our primary employer agreed to let us make up the hours through the week (come in early, stay late whatever) so we could leave early on Friday to make it to track on time. Last night I was helping with parking, my job was to wave a flag to direct traffic through two flags with a space about 10 feet apart. There was only one entrance and it was also the exit to this parking lot. That entrance had to be shared with the cars and the people coming and leaving the event. At the same time cars are going through there are about 6000 people using the same entrance to get to the event. There were multiple times a kid or someone with a wheelchair almost got hit. I'm trying to move people along and directing vehicles as safely as I can though this small space. It was not hard and nothing bad happened. I was waving a flag to direct traffic. While I'm doing my job a man on a four wheeler is coming and going through the traffic I was directing. He was Stopping traffic so he could cross back and forth. I didn't think much of it, a few mins later he stops and starts yelling at me. Telling me I need to get the cars moving fast. He was very aggressive. I explained to him there is not much more I can do other then wave the flag, the traffic was continually moving. Traffic had slowed due to the collection of parking payments (which I was not conducting). I had zero control over how fast the traffic was going. He yelled at me again and asked "If he has to do it himself" I replied if you think you can wave this flag better go ahead. I'm very upset at this point. I dont know who he was, or if he even worked there or not. He was a stranger yelling very aggressively at me. My supervisor came out and I asked him if this guy works there and the guy starts yelling at me again. The reason why I believe he was being sexist is because there was a whole field of men and he singled me out. I don't know if he thought I would just take it or what. I did not I matched his tone in response because no man especially a co-worker should yell at me, I was just doing my assigned job. I did nothing wrong and he singled me out. There is a powertrip problem at that place and it's disgusting. I had zero training, they gave me a shirt and told me to do the job, and then get angry when things go differently than their unstated expectations. One supervisor will tell us to do one thing then another will tell us something completely different. Their lack of organization has put the safety of many at risk. I had to stop traffic a few times to let people cross, but a child being hit by a car would be a much bigger problem then getting people to a parking spot at a faster rate. They do not care about the safety of their employees or patrons and only care about the money patrons spend. There should be at least another opening for people to cross safety that is not next the moving traffic. I will not be continuing to support this speedway and suggest you don't either until something is done about the sexism and lack of safety. I have worked in a male dominate industry for a while now and have never been talked to or treated the way I was at the Speedway. also have not been paid.

You're paying for the convience of something right in town rather than taking a trip to Silverwood or out to Silver Mountain. The amusements are scaled-down to fit in a commercial building and nothing is terribly thrilling. I think the age-range sweet spot is maybe 6 to 12, older kids would probably be a bit underwhelmed. Food is pretty affordable and what you'd expect (pizza, french fries, ice cream). Seating for grown ups is hard to come by and really uncomfortable so if you're bringing your kids out prepare to be bored with a sore ass and/or feet. I reccomend headphones and an audiobook. The arcade is insanely expensive IMO. Games start around $1-2 and range up to $7 for a single game. You can go through $20 per kid n half an hour easily. The indoor water park is a nice option in winter. It's $30 and you can stay all day. Come early to grab your beach chairs or they will be gone. I posted a video showing the size and scope. Not amazing but pretty decent. Adults can pay $5 rather than $30 if you're simply going to watch your kids, but this puts you up on barren balcony of sadness that looks like an afterthought / fire escape with really uncomfortable seating.

I would say we definitely received value for the money we spent! We stayed at the attached hotel (which did not impress me, see my separate review for them) so we hit the amusement park right at opening at 10am. We enjoyed the attractions and arcades until dinner time, then we went back to the room, changed clothes and hit the water park until about 9pm. My granddaughter was on sensory overload the entire day. Never a dull moment for her. The reason I deducted a star from what otherwise was a 5 star experience? Their pricing for children is unfair in my opinion. It is based on age (e.g. kids "X" and under pay less) when it should be based on height. My granddaughter is quite small for her age. Because of this, she was shut out of many of the attractions. Which I totally understand and agree with for safety. However....we had to pay full price for her even though she could not enjoy a quarter of the attractions. They really should consider changing their policy to "kids under 40 inches pay less" type pricing instead of basing it on age. Since height is really what determines what they can and cannot enjoy here. But, despite this set back, the three of us managed to have a GREAT day at this park. Would I go back there? Oh...heck ya! And I would suggest you do likewise.
