Consistently fun time in this store, which has become a place to visit with friends. I have bought two sewing machines, a fancy steam iron, and a vacuum cleaner from these folks, and been delighted. I always find what I need and get expert advice. I love these guys! I notice that the clientele is becoming less the experienced seamstress and more often people who needs simple repairs on garments, hats, etc. Alas, people aren't as handy and self-sufficient as they used to be. If that's you (certain previous reviewers, you know who you are) please stay out of "my" shop. THIS IS A GREAT LOCAL SHOP for new and experienced "sewists", folks! If I could give more stars I would. Paul went out of his way to be helpful, informative, and kind when my wife's sewing machine broke. He had great communication before and during my visit, stayed late to help me, and he generally seemed like a great guy. Even though we don't live super close, I think I we will become regular customers. Don't hesitate to call and visit if you need sewing machine (or vacuum) repairs or supplies! P.S. I'm frankly shocked at some of the reviews already on here - all I can say is that I had the opposite experience that some who left negative reviews had. Paul was just wonderful! Both him and his team restored our Miele vacuum cleaner to "better than new"! His patience in finding the problem is something rarely seen today. Most repair shops would tell you to just buy a new machine!! He even polished the outside shell! Just wow!! What amazing service! I will be bringing my Viking sewing machine to him soon (yes he also repairs sewing machines!!) A friend told us about him, and she was right. She said if anyone can fix it... he can! Beware- There is a real life monster hiding behind the walls of this establishment and his name is Paul. A recent transaction, where a customer came in to purchase a part for her vacuum cleaner only to get home to find that the part did not work well with her machine (carpet turbo attachment- for Miele vacuum-cleaner). When the purchase took place, Paul, went into the back room and came out with an unboxed part, with no paperwork or item bound in plastics. He was asked why it was not boxed, to which he replied that he gets all parts in bulk and that they are not individually wrapped. First warning Upon attempting to return the part, customer was literally screamed at as Paul slammed the part back down on the table, as he called the customer "crazy", WOW!!! Remaining calm, the customer shared her qualm explaining to Paul, that while the part appeared to work well in the store, it did not in her home. Paul took advantage of the situation, with the customer being alone in the store and used the opportunity to berate, intimidate, and threaten her with screaming and slamming the item back in the bag, leaving her with no choice but to leave the store scared and defeated. This behavior is UNACCEPTABLE and no one, no establishment should be allowed to operate in such a Disgusting manner. I implore you when thinking about a place to purchase your parts or fabrics to choose another store. Paul, to you, A Warning!!!! I hope that Karma has its way with you, and it may not be today or tomorrow but people like you always get theirs and it will be poetic and beautiful. read more

Only getting a one star because there is no option to give a ZERO star. This shop owner insulted my 80 year old mother who simply wanted her window treatments after 6 months. He is RUDE and has my poor Mom VERY upset. I am surprised how he stays in business after reading all his negative reviews. This man Paul is mean and NASTY. He demanded my Mom to get out of his store and accused her of being "one of those woman who always has to get what they want when they want". I'm giving this store one star because it's not an option to give it NO STARS!! This morning I took in my Singer sewing machine for a repair. As soon as I walked in, the gentleman said "Oh my god, if I get one more crappy grocery store machine in here I'll have to kill myself!" I am not kidding. I politely told him I am not interested in doing business with him and that his disrespect towards a customer is astounding. STAY AWAY! We bought Hunter Douglas cellular shades from Paul, the owner of Stitch in Time in Danbury. He owns stores in Bethel, Danbury & Darien. I agree with the negative reviews from 8/11/2022 and 6/18/2020. I needed several of the shades restrung immediately after they were installed. They never worked smoothly. Now, not quite five years later, they all need to be restrung as the string is shredding. The shades are under warranty for 7 years. He said he would charge for take down, delivery to Hunter Douglas and reinstalling. When I questioned this, he blew up and became the monster referred to in the 6/18/2020 review. He started screaming at me and calling me names. He was extremely insulting. He should not be in business. I will bring my shades to a Hunter Douglas service center nearby and, hopefully, the shades are really from Hunter Douglas. I don't see his stores listed as a dealer and the Hunter Douglas website. read more

I frequent this shop often, and prior to my last visit I was ready to give Paul, the owner, and his co-worker (co-owner?) a 5 star rave. I've read negative Yelp reviews about this store before and couldn't understand it. I was ready to defend these guys, but luckily I came to see what all the other reviewers experienced. I often go to this shop for buttons, thread, zippers, rulers, pins, closures--everything. I rely on them to service my two sewing machines. Most recently I was considering purchasing fabric and a new machine there. They're a better option than Michael's and more convenient than visiting NYC or ordering online. I'm a fashion designer so it was a pleasure to find a local shop like this. Typically Paul is always very friendly. Sometimes his personality can be jarring or over the top but it's not a big deal. He's a bit sassy and loud and extroverted but always helpful and thorough...until my last and most recent visit. As soon as I walked in the door Paul had a nasty attitude. He shouted rude comments at me from across the room, that I mostly ignored because I know how he can be. He was writing up a service slip for another customer and took time away from that customer to berate me and put me down. Totally childish and immature- not to mention unprofessional. I asked his coworker a question that would have taken all of 5 minutes but he repeatedly told me he was too busy and I'd have to come back another day- for a ridiculous cost. For the duration of the conversation both Paul and his co-worker made snide comments that made me feel unwelcome. As I was exiting the store Paul yelled from the back room another snide comment. I smiled and kept walking because the whole time I knew I'd never walk in there again and he'd just lost a loyal customer. I had a deadline approaching so I looked up some tutorials on Youtube and got the small question I needed answered via the internet. It makes me sad to say that I will never return here. I'm disappointed in how I was treated by a shop that I've spent a lot of money in, and by people who I thought I had a professional relationship with. I'd much rather take my money to an online retailer and/or a repair shop in NYC than be treated with such disrespect. read more

I was from out of state for work & needed a quick stitch job on my hat for my uniform. Less then a 3 minute task on a sewing machine, willing to pay whatever ($3-$8). There was 3 people in the store and they were all very rude to me before and after I told them my story and what I needed. They then referred me to a local Dry cleaner /Taylor & said rudely he would probably charge me $90. I left the store astonished at how rude they were and how they were too busy to do a three-minute stitching on a hat. I drove down the street and went to the tailor who was very close, hoping i wouldn't be charged a lot for something so little. I walked in told him my story. he did it in less than two minutes, maybe even less than a minute for free and said have a good day. I gave him a couple dollar tip and left. read more

Let me preface this review by saying I used to love this shop. Paul's stories were so cute and funny, and I used to laugh right along as he bashed other customers! I thought they were just stories meant to make the customer more comfortable - and I thought the stories were all fake or extremely dramatic on purpose. ... And then I became one of those stories, and I heard him telling it to another customer right in front of me. I was stupefied. What others say is right. People tell you who they are, so listen. He told us who he was by telling stories about previous customers who he had a sour experience with (it seems like he's had a bad experience with everyone he comes into contact with) and berating them, and I thought it was so charming, but now I see it's just him being catty and rude. He knows his stuff, but his staff are trained to be natural salesmen. They will belittle you if you don't buy their product, try to up sale you, try and get you to pay more for a service, or convince you its your fault for X issue, and now you need to pay for their expensive service. They're like mechanics that tell you what your car needs, and you pay for this service because you don't know any better. He had a few moments where he was kind, and again, he is definitely knowledgable and has a love for his craft, but now I see those moments were all a ploy to lure you in. Noticeably, he was really nastier when I did not buy a product from his shop at a ridiculous mark-up, but bought it online instead at a reasonable price. He berated the sewing machine as if I had bought the materials and constructed it at home. I'm disappointed. I will have to conduct my business in New York, and refuse to subjugate myself to Paul and his posse's demeaning attitude and snarky behaviors. He has lost another loyal customer. read more

I take my sewing machine in yearly for its tuneup with the periodic stop fir thread, buttons, etc. They are terrific and speedy and fair priced. And helped me understand a few things on my machine that were not clear in the instruction book. They have a new address! Diagonally across the street from Trader Joe's. (The former Runners Roost store.). So glad and relieved that they are still around. read more

I really wanted to like this place, since I am in the market for a lot of fabric and upholstery for my new home. Unfortunately I have been into the store 3 times and each time the owner Paul was incredibly rude! He didn't have time to help me, even though there were no other customers in the store! The third time, he told me he had to prepare for an appointment with a " big spender" client and told me to come back another time. I will NOT Be back! I had the most amazing experience at Stitch in Time today! I took my 1970's Singer sewing machine in for a service. Their customer service was amazing. The man who helped me, Paul, was incredibly knowledgeable about my ole' sewing machine. Best decision I made today. Appallingly offensive shop owner decided to respond like an absolute jerk to standard greetings and well wishes on health during the pandemic -- when I went to his Darien store to pick up my wife's repaired Janome sewing machine. He demanded: 1. Did I remember the Swine flu? 2. Did I know how many Americans died (he inaccurately said 90,000)? 3. Did I know who was president during H1N1 (aka swine flu)? He told me that President Obama was, to him, a "swine." I'm thinking to myself, I'm merely paying for a sewing-machine repair with a credit card, and I have to listen to and respond to this? When I checked the mortality claim and found it to be wrong -- 12,500 Americans (a terrible loss for sure), according to ProPublica -- I shared that politely with him. "Fact checker, huh?" he snapped. I said not to worry, I wouldn't be coming back. He then called me an "asshole" and told me I couldn't leave. I shared with him that I'd be going. He laughed like a crazy person and screamed, "I love when I trigger you people!" Good grief. This man's loved ones should get him some help ASAP. read more

Whoa baby. Brace yourself. Major attitude issues going on in here. Bemoaning the fact that a sewing shop is a rare gem nowadays, I stepped into this operation with great excitement. While there is a decent supply of notions, I felt the presence of such negative energy from the presumed owner or manager whenever I lifted a hand to touch. Not only that, but if not hovering, he was berating his employees in the background. Really heartbreaking to hear. Had they been children, I would have called social services immediately. This shop is one of those "essentials" places for me. It's old-fashioned customer service from truly knowledgeable experts in sewing, and home decorating. I visit often to buy a few notions or fabrics, and it is where I bought my fancy Janome sewing machine. I am having so much fun with it and am glad I treated myself.
