I was beyond excited to discover a vegan ice cream stand in Portland and made sure we went straight there upon arrival as they were closed for the rest of our visit. Sticky Sweet is an adorable, walk-up counter on a fairly busy corner. Street parking is a bit tricky depending on the time of day. Seating is limited to a single bench out front (which we were lucky to snag) or your car. The daily selections are posted on a cute chalkboard. All of their products are vegan and don't contain refined sugar. Dates are the main source of sweetness in most things I immediate knew I wanted to try a sundae - vanilla ice cream with butterscotch topping and whipped cream in a waffle bowl. My mom went with the walnut maple ice in a waffle cone. We both enjoyed our selections. The texture isn't as smooth or creamy as traditional ice cream but definitely sweet. It was fun trying out a somewhat healthier treat and supporting a local plant-based business!

If you are looking for homemade vegan ice cream, this is the place to be. The owners were the sweetest ever and the ice cream was heavenly. If you have dogs, they have pup cups available.

Sticky sweet always hits the spot. Such great ingredients in their ice cream. We go there often and have tried lots of their flavors. I personally really love their Tahitian vanilla!

After a relatively short winter, sticky sweet is back in action with a full display of summer. After several weekends of not being able to make my way over, we finally did on a Saturday around 6pm -- this place was poppin' like a pre-Covid mass gathering! They had more flavors on the rotation than they did in the fall and I was excited to try their local roasted latte. The SO got the peanut butter cone. I always remembered that their ice cream was salty (in fact my first review suggests their name should be salty sweet), but I was a little surprised that my ice cream was wayyyy saltier than the fast food fries with an extra 5 packets of NaCl. I'm dumbfounded that no other reviews think their ice cream is salty. Now, it doesn't mean it's not good -- in fact I enjoy the fact that it's not incredibly sweet, but I really felt like I was eating a savory treat than a sweet treat. The SO could not even finish his because he thought it was too salty. I don't know what it is -- I can't imagine that salt is one of the first three ingredients, but there is something about their recipes that confounds me. But alas, their cones are still one of my favorites I've had. I'll definitely go back again, but I probably need to give it some time. Maybe we were just über thirsty after a warm day.

This is the best ice cream in the state of Maine. The end. (Okay, I'll elaborate, but I'd be happy leaving my review there.) I don't really go out for ice cream anymore because dairy just doesn't make me feel very good. Enter Sticky Sweet. Their website says "The best plant based ice cream you've ever tasted." But I think they could just say "the best ice cream you've ever tasted," because this stuff is perfection. It's 100% vegan and 100% gluten-free, made from scratch, made with love, served with a smile and an authentic love of the community. I'm immediately obsessed. It's the creamiest ice cream I've ever had. It's the most flavorful ice cream I've ever had. It's the most chunky-with-ingredients ice cream I've ever had. Oh, and that maple sea salt? I've never had something so maplely or salty and I need it in my life every single day forever please. You can walk up to their window on Cumberland Ave, currently open Thursday through Sunday 2pm to 9pm (or until they sell out... and they sell out, so plan accordingly). If you're seeing them in person, get the waffle cone. GET THE WAFFLE CONE. And bring me one, please. [You can also buy select pints at the Portland Food Coop, Lois', Monte's, Morning Glory (in Brunswick), and Royal River Natural Foods (in Yarmouth).]

Go every day and try all the flavors. I am floored at how good the vegan flavors are. If you have ever tried Frankie and Jo's on the west coast, THIS ice cream is way better. I should have bought a pint. Run don't walk. And tip well :)

Plant based ice cream was so good! It's hard to find places around the US that even have a small amount of vegan/plantbased options. I had the peanut butter cookie sundae in a waffle bowl...that's right, a plant based waffle bowl!! Whipped cream, beet root sprinkles, etc. Everything I wanted in a sundae! Anytime I'm in portland, I'll always stop by for more treats!

can't remember the flavors, but... they're all amazing

Honestly my fave vegan ice cream on the East Coast. Doesn't even matter what flavor, everything here is so good. Their cones are also hard to beat. Friendly staff, too -- I love everything about these folks!

It's a cop out to talk about sampling spoons as waste when I've seen other ice cream shops find solutions to that, it's really just greed. They know they'll sell ice cream regardless so they'll cut that corner. Maybe lines are a little longer, but as a local, it makes me not want to come back all year long. Also, the base recipe they seem to use is VERY thick and rich, to the point where it's arguably too much and takes away from the flavors. I've had some good bites here too so it's not a dud altogether. I'll say I'm partial to higher end ice cream (which I feel MDI falls into), and will pay a premium happily for a great product, but I haven't been back in a while because it's hit or miss if I'll enjoy my ice cream since they don't offer samples. I've also not craved any of the 5 or so flavors I've tried in order to return for them. There's great potential there, and I am opening to trying it again if they decide to prioritize local customers over the summer tourists.

Lived in Portland for years and never had a reason to come here when there's so many other (glamorous) options, but now living so close I just think this spot is super, duper charming. Yes, the prices are higher than at other places and I'm not entirely sure why, but this doesn't really bother me because the portions have always been enormous here, it's super convenient to where I live, there's never a wait, the staff is accommodating about wacky requests, they take credit cards, and the customer service is sometimes above and beyond what's becoming the norm downtown (I showed up once a few minutes after they had closed for the night, but they still let us order giant sundaes anyway!). They serve stuff from The Ice Cream Machine (out of Rhode Island, and distributed by Sysco) so it's not homemade or local even - I don't think it's the most delicious ice cream in the world, but it gets the job done and sometimes that's all you need (side note: their sundaes are awesome here; they know how to pour. on. the. hot. fudge!). Do I think this is a destination spot? Absolutely not. Is it ever going to make it on some national "Best of..." list that will drive hoards of people to it? Nope. Will I seek it out when I move away from the neighborhood? Can't say that I will. But is it a perfect spot for those Back Cove/The Pocket folks within walking distance? Yep. It's nice that in the state's biggest, busiest, trendiest city there are still places you can safely, quietly walk to get some ice cream with your family and enjoy it in a pristine park across the street only locals really know about.

Gross Confection recently announced on social media they would be shutting down the bar/desserts service while remaining open as a bakery. My wife and I came here many a times for an end cap to the night for one last drink and delicious and beautifully made desserts. From times in their dimly lit space that gave off romantic vibes or even enjoying our desserts in the summer sun outside people watching, every time will be remembered. Timing worked out well and we were doing a staycation in Portland and knew we needed to add a stop here one last time. Thankfully we got our names in on the waiting list early enough Friday and got sat as one of the last tables. We each had one last phenomenal drink; my wife and Apricot 75 that had a great tart kick of apricot and lemon. While I enjoyed their Chai Fashioned which spelt like a chai but had that boozy bourbon warming you'd expect. Dessert wise everything sounded good as always but we settled on two. The Goat Cheesecake and Pineapple Cake. The cheesecake was the perfect sweetness without being cloying and the blueberry sorbet on top paired so well. The pineapple cake was moist and tasted so good we needed to scrap the plate clean.
