I work at a local non-profit that helps Veterans. We had called and they had generators. We were…read moretrying to secure 2 for the upcoming winter storm. This was on Friday, January23, 2026. I got to the store around 1:00pm. There was a generator on the floor by itself and no one was around it. So I got it and got 2 gas cans. I heard an employee told another employee to tell me that the generator was not for sale. So, the other employee came to me and said so. I looked confused but I left it. I went to the parking lot and called our office to let them know there were no more generators and they said we had called and was wondering if they can do anything for us since we work with Veterans. So, I returned and ask for a manager. I was told that the employee that told me the generator was not for sale was a manager. So I went back to her and told her about our organization and that we work with Veterans. I let her know that the VA wanted to make sure we had a contingency should power go out. She said there was nothing she could do for us. At that time I noticed a couple employees came to take the generator to the back. I asked her if she know of any other stores of their's had them and she said she did not know. If found it odd that she did not look. Anyway, i went back to the parking lot and looked up othe Northern Tool stores. I decided to cal the one in Kannapolis. Elizabeth answered the phone. I told her the same story about our organization and why we need a generator. She said they did not have any generators but if I can get there she can get it ordered and I can pick it up at their distribution center. I drove from the Colfax store to Kannapolis and Elizabeth and her team was waiting for me. Because of their help and them understanding the need for what we do, I ordered 2 generators and was able to pick them up. That is what care and customer service is at the Kannapolis store. This is certainly more than a hardware store, offering your standard stuff like hardware (including specialty pieces) and pints, but they also sell work clothing, home decor, seasoning for grilling, and everything in between. The staff is all very friendly, and attentive, quick to help find what you're looking for. My one complaint is their pricing. Though it's convenient and closer than going to the bigger stores, there pricing is very high on a lot of product. Sale items are a little more comparable, but I'll be honest that I think they will have trouble surviving if their pricing structure doesn't get adjusted.

Hard to find those anymore unless you head down Bessemer Avenue to McKnight Hardware. That place is Mom and Pop through and through. I have been going to McKnight Hardware since I moved to this neighborhood over 20 years ago and the staff rarely changes. The store is incredibly convenient and although I've never priced compared them with a Walmart or Home Depot, I'm happy to pay the price and support the OG hardware store in the area. Over the years I have seen many young men and women who started as teen helpers become cashiers and managers. The place has a family feel and the staff always knows exactly what they are talking about! It's also my go-to when I need to make some keys! I can always count on McKnight for whatever my needs are. Whether I'm looking for bird seed or glue or paint or a nail, they have it! I recently bought my weed whacker from them and I love how they are right down the street from me if I need it to be serviced, which I recently did. They used to have a pretty extensive garden nursery but it has slowed down over the years. In the early years I was even able to buy some lily pads! Lol But all of your other departments are well stocked and well priced and it's so nice to have a staff person that knows what they are talking about! There is plenty of parking right up front and it's conveniently located on Bessemer Avenue. I encourage you to patronize this place. It breaks my heart to see so many wonderful stores like McKnight Hardware shut down and give way to the big chains. We want to keep places with that Mom and Pop feel and this place deserves to continue to serve this neighborhood for years to come!
