Scandic Ariadne - Another view from my room.

We booked two rooms here before heading out on a cruise. Staff very helpful and friendly. Rooms…read morevery clean but small. Pillows not very good. Shower - well I will let you figure that one out BUT don't leave your dirty cloths on the bathroom floor- unless you want to pack them in your luggage wet. If we cruise out of Stockholm again we would stay at this hotel for the convince.

I stayed here for a week because I had to go to a conference in Stockholm. When we have these conferences, twice a year, the nations push the boat out and arrange quite posh, usually four-star hotels, for the attendees. Now I don't know if this one had four-stars but to me it was more in the two-star range. The rooms were OK, very basic; nothing like a posh place. There was free wifi in the room, which is always nice, and decent television with many shows in English (the Swedish don't dub tv shows and movies). The worst part of the room was the bathroom. The toilet seat was broken and the bathroom was quite small. The shower was a typical shower head that you got under and the water went right onto the floor and down a drain i.e., no proper shower to speak of. Instead of nice little bars of soap and little bottles of shampoo and conditioner, the soap supply was one of those that you find in a men's room in McDonalds or other public place; put your hand under it, squeeze and get a handful of soap. Not what I expect in a hotel that isn't exactly cheap to stay in. On the other hand, the breakfast was plentiful and quite good.

Pros: Amazing view. The hotel is on an ~100 ft cliff, overlooking a bridge to the main Stockholm area. Scandinavian design furnishings, including iconic lights from two Swedish designers. Nearby transit points. The nearest light rail is down a switchback path to the bottom of the cliff, or a bus stop at the front of the hotel. Nearby grocery store. There is a Coop just a couple blocks down the road, so if you just want to grab something simple for dinner you can be in and out quickly. Breakfast is free and has okay variety. There are bikes to borrow for free. We walked or used public transit for the whole trip, but the bikes were sitting right outside the entrance. Cons: The staff is nice, but are understaffed and somewhat lazy. We had some issues with dropping off luggage in the morning because there was only one person on duty and he could only buzz the luggage door open (which meant we needed to run from the front desk to the baggage room). We then had issues picking up our luggage in the afternoon because none of the 3 people at the front desk wanted to leave the front desk, forcing us to run again. The floors are engineered wood instead of being actual wood. There were some maintenance issues in the bathroom. The grout was moldy, there was no conditioner (though there was a place for the conditioner bottle), and part of the shower fixture came apart. None of these were a huge deal, but I was expecting better after the previous Scandic property. Likely due to the relatively high vacancy while we were there, the breakfast food was not as fresh as I would have liked. The first day, the bread was somewhat stale, the crepes tasted reheated, and the grapes needed to be washed. This was better on the other two days we ate at the hotel.

No shampoos and soaps. Normally I'd go on a florid rant about this but my fellow travelers (not meant to denote that they are communists) say this is common for European Hotels. The lobby was so minuscule that the line of guests spilled out onto the street, and the lobby mini mart was wanting. We had dinner at the hotel and it was fine. A somewhat austere selection though, we had the chicken, which had herbs generously applied and added to the flavor. It was OK. The accompanying sauce was very helpful, it had lemony and mustardy components. Sans sauce, the chicken was a 2, and with it, a 3. The rice was a disaster. Not fluffed in the slightest, nor butter or oil used to help, it was one big clump, arduously chopped into a handful of clumps. Application of the chicken gravy helped. They had 4 different breads laid out. Each thoughtfully wrapped In cloth to permit germ free cutting. Tried each and they were good.

I'm gluten and lactose intolerant but I was never hungry while staying here. They do a small but very good buffet that will suit everyone's needs. I was honestly impressed by the quality of the food and I could hear other guests making comments about it as well. When arriving the hostess that welcomed us wasn't very friendly the other staff was great and very helpfull. The rooms are spacious and clean. The location is also pretty good, not right in the center but with everything within walking distance. I would, no doubt, book this hotel again next time I visit Stockholm!

Had few pre arrival emails and communication that were helpful. More emails during my 2 night stay in early October. Front desk staff and all personnel were friendly, cheerful and competent. Location was quite convenient too. Common areas and bar/restaurant are also nice and tasteful. Had drink and appetizers in the bar, and enjoyed it. So, all in all, pleasant boutique hotel. Now to few negatives. No free breakfast as Platinum Marriott Bonvoy amenity, only small discount. The rate was slightly high, but both of those thins are rather minor. The main issue here is a room itself. I didn't care much for decor, bit it is subjective of course. I couldn't get Platinum upgrade and ended up in their standard double room. It was simply too small even for "one of me", and not too well designed to move around. Felt a bit claustrophobic. Please don't tell me that I should expect very small rooms all over large European metropolis, it is simply not true. I travel enough on business and pleasure to know, and stay in many European cities. It was unusually small, that is all. Still, would recommend Miss Clara. If you are sensitive to a room size, pay up for a larger room then, I guess...)))

I came in with my non-Asian coworker and he was helped at the desk while I waited right behind him. There were 3 employees at the front desk. An Italian family came up after me and they were waved over to be helped. I thought maybe the staff just didn't see me but then it happened again. Another European lady walks up and is waved over to be helped. I stepped up and asked why everyone is cutting me off in line and that's when the front desk said "oh sorry about that." After 18 hours of travel, this was a horrible way to start the week. I had a few coworkers staying at the hobo across the street and everytime I walked in to meet up with them, I was greeted by staff. I stayed there last year as well and didn't experience anything discriminatory. I assumed the Downtown Camper would be better since they have a few more amenities in the room such an iron and kettle but this was not worth it. Being treated like you are invisible ruins the entire experience. On top of that, it makes me look at Sweden in a different light. Right outside the hotel there was a group of men that proceeded to yell things like "ni hao Ching Chang Chong!" I expected more from a place/staff that is supposed to be hospitable and welcoming. While we cannot control what happens outside of the hotel, it would have been nice to feel safer in your hotel and free from judgement just because we don't look the same.

They have a bar, workout room, spa area, dining area, this cool neat thing you can lounge in, etc. kind of had a fancy hostel feel, except super expensive. Things to watch out for: adding breakfast with your room is not cheap, 48 USD is what we were told. Rooms are super hot and you don't have access to air and aren't able to turn the heat below around 70 Fahrenheit (and it's only fall, not winter), bar staff wasn't very friendly, we didn't ask for cleaning, specifically said we didn't want it, and someone still walked into our room the first day, terrace tables shown in the ads for the hotel are part of the spa and you can't access them if you don't want to pay, should be clear before hand. We had a good stay here, would say the biggest thing was the room heat issue and we'd wake up sweating each night and have trouble getting back to sleep. But hotel has no major issues, would just expect a little bit more in these areas for the price!
