I met Marilla herself, who gave me a tour of the small shop and explained how everything worked. This store carries several types of products. Bulk spices, coffee, tea, and candy; reusable/ecofriendly household products like soap bags and kitchen scrubbers; and big refill tubs of liquid items like face wash, hand soap, shampoo, and the like. They have jars you can purchase, or bring your own jar/container. Either way, the container is weighed and then you are charged for the weight of the product. There are fancier jars to buy for a few dollars, or use one of the recycled jars on the free shelf (they are cleaned and sanitized before being set out). Marilla also accepts clean, clear jars (no label) if you have them to donate. I look forward to refilling some household products here instead of buying one more plastic hand soap bottle or spice jar. Check this place out!

Hedonist ice cream, my friends, is not Wegmans. And I'm not knocking Wegmans - it's perfectly normal ice cream with a ton of ingredients I can't pronounce for purposes of preservation. Hedonist ice cream is so much more than a cardboard carton of ice cream. They have a rotating menu of flavors, all made fresh and in-house with no preservatives. I have never met a cookies n cream ice cream I didn't love, so I went with that. Mom had a salted caramel ice cream that was fabulous. I paid for both of us since the ice cream was my idea. She was shocked at the 12 dollar total for both of us. "That's three things of ice cream at Wegmans!" But at Hedonist, it's absolutely quality over quantity. Even my mom admitted it tasted better. She wouldn't go back there, and I may not because I live 400 miles away from there, but if I was in town again and I was screaming for ice cream, I'd happily make my way over there again.

She rang me up for a mango for $.99 and it said "mango" on the screen in front of me. She then changed it to "fruit" for $1.50. I said I no longer wanted it and visibly put it back on the shelf. She then proceeded to give me a receipt which did not contain the mango, but the credit card charge did include the mango for $1.50. Not a lot of money, but charging me for something I didn't purchase is not OK with me especially after re-charging me for the same item and increasing it by 50%.If you go keep an eye on what they charge you.

The aisles are tight and the lights are dim. Few labels are in English but the staff is very friendly and eager to help. There are some fresh fruits and vegetables in the front of the store along with large bags of rice. Freezers line the store, and there is one fish tank which was disappointingly empty. The majority of the store was devoted to raw ingredients rather than ready to eat selections. I felt that the store was organized in a logical manner with ingredients arranged by country of origin. Hikari is a cost effective alternative to Wegman's and the selection is beyond all comparison. Hikari is a must visit for the avid amateur chef.
