Montgomery Courthouse Square is a calm and easy wander on a holiday, especially with all the…read moresurrounding buildings closed and only a few tourists drifting through. The 1850 courthouse is the obvious anchor, rising up in full Green Revival style and giving the square a strong historic center. Around it, you'll find a fountain with a water display, a statue of Abraham Lincoln, and a massive Civil War era cannon labeled as a trophy of the war for the union, all of which add a little extra texture to the space even when nothing is going on. The square itself is clean and open, with plenty of room to walk around and take in the details without feeling rushed. As a quick stop to appreciate some local history and architecture, it's a solid visit, especially when the holiday quiet gives you the whole place to yourself. Spend a moment thinking about the plaque in front of the courthouse, "Remember the promises you made in the attic" that commemorates the Great Dayton Flood of March 25, 1913. For me, the square is best at christmas time. The weekend after thanksgiving is the tree lighting ceremony. Local celebrities (aka annoying news anchors) show up, we all sing jingle bells, and we light our tree. It's not quite a Seuss-esque Whos-down-in-Whoville gathering, but it's close. While you're there, ride some horse-drawn carriages, try to get a sneak-taste of the gingerbread houses, and check out the old Rike's display. For a very long time tubas accompanied the jingle bells sing along. This was always a great trainwreck of a performance and a helluva a lot of fun. I wonder what has happened to our tubas...

Beautiful covered bridge that still is used by traffic (one-way at a time) on Hyde Road. Easily…read moreseen from the trail but a little harder by car. You can drive through it but there's really no place to park your car nearby to admire it. I can understand the frustration of the people on the road because I can imagine how often people were blocking to road to take pictures. I parked in the neighborhood a few blocks away and walked over. The trail is on my list of ones to ride my bike so I hope to see it from a different vantage point soon.

This mound is approximately 40 feet high, encompasses over one acre and is 574 feet in circumference. It majestically sits in the middle of a neighborhood of middle-class houses. The road completely encircles the mound so you can drive to look at it from all sides. If you're into the history of the Native Americans that lived here before we did, it's worth a stop. 5 Stars

This is a monument dedicated to Civil War Union soldiers. It was dedicated in 1884 and consists of…read morea large 73-foot high granite column and a 9 and a half foot bronze statue of a solider holding a rifle on top. The original statue was made of Italian marble, but had to be replaced due to deterioration. The sculpture was made in the likeness of Private George Washington Fair, a carpenter and bricklayer born in Dayton who served in the Union Army from 1861 to 1865. It's height is impressive and it is in relatively good shape, especially considering its age and that it was moved twice, once to and new location in 1948 to alleviate traffic and then back to its original location in 1991. There was a copper box containing documents of the time placed "within the granite bosom" of the monument during it 1884 dedication. They were removed in 1948 when the statue was moved. The documents included "copies of all daily and weekly newspapers of the day, the annual reports of the Board of Health and Police Department, a copy of the city directory for 1883 and a large color picture of the unveiling of the monument." I know, exciting stuff. The monument is located in the middle of the street, and has a little plaza with some seating connected to it. If you walk over there then just be careful. You have to cross a busy street. There is metered street parking available within a reasonable walking distance and there is a commercial parking garage located across the street. Definitely worth a look if you are in Dayton. I would probably couple it with a visit to the nearby Riverside Park to maximize your trip and make the most of your visit. FYI: A crowd of 100,000 people witnessed the dedication in 1883. Dayton's population was reported to be 40,000 at that time.

The soldier holding the rifle at the top is Private George Washington Fair and he was originally made of Italian white marble when arrived in Dayton in 1884. He was recast in bronze when the statue was moved in 1948. Private Fair was a carpenter and bricklayer born in Dayton who mustered into the Union Army in 1861 and out in 1865. Also known as Hyde Road Covered Bridge, this is one of the prettiest covered bridges I've ever…read morevisited AND one of the youngest! Built in 2014, it does not span a river, but instead crosses over the Little Miami Scenic Bike Trail going between Xenia and Yellow Springs. It's roughly 85 feet in length. The story behind this bridge is that it was named after local engineer and covered bridge lover Richard P. Eastman. Richard fought to save many of the covered bridges in his county and heavily influenced the building of the bike trail the bridge crosses. According to one article, the trail may not have ever happened if it weren't for the efforts of Eastman. He even has the nickname of The Godfather of the Little Miami Scenic Trail which was part of the "Rails to Trails" movement of turning abandoned railway tracks into recreational trails. The article also stated "He was the only county engineer in the state of Ohio who wanted to do a project like this." While the trail is well loved and appreciated today, it required a passionate fighter to get the project underway and completed. Richard was that man, making the bike trail a huge part of his legacy during his years as engineer. Richard died in 2011 at age 91. I bet this bridge provides an iconic backdrop in the fall season! The design seems to be a modified version of the Town Lattice Truss building style found in many long standing historic covered bridges. It is said Richard raised his family not too far from this bridge which makes this a touching memorial. What a great legacy! When visiting please note there aren't many places to park, so be respectful of nearby residence and their property. Be brief and don't park on lawns. There are currently no signs that restrict parking to view the bridge, but I'm sure that would change with abuse and carelessness.

Worth checking out for winter water fall. It's very close to the fire station .. falls under the…read morebridge. There is free parking and follow the sound of the falls. It's a pretty decent falls so has to be really cold for weeks to freeze. To get the good view ... well you have to walk out on a ledge. That day it was still icy and slippery. I was alone and more than a little afraid of falling. But really afraid of falling off the ledge into the water or frozen water ... possibly to my death. The ledge to get the view i wanted is slanted down so being icy it was scary. after this stop i went to Charleston falls.

I heard about these falls on the news the previous weekend this May. While cliff diving looks appealing, the alluring, serene flow of the water hides a strong undertow, trapping the would-be swimmer / diver from surfacing. The warning signs pointing this is out are routinely stolen. As a result, local park servicemen have posted new signage deterring folks from jumping into the falls. The best way to enjoy these falls are from the banks or walking down the hidden stair case so you can be level with them. We opened some IPAs from the local Troy brewery, Moellers and watched the waters pass by. Nicole is local to this area and had never been here before. When asked, her parents recalled the Christmas light festivities that hung across the falls many years ago which was fun to go to. However, this annual activity is no longer. Definitely worth a stop if you like water falls.

What a fantastic time we had taking a tour of James Galloway's log cabin, as well as the restored Victorian mansion with period decor, the Titanic exhibit, railroad display, and step back in time to the 1800's scenes, all at the Greene County Historical Society! I highly recommend it to everyone in the Xenia area!
