There are two things at Steven's that make me drool: crab brie soup and ANY of the desserts. I can't get enough of that soup! I wish they would sell it to me by the gallon. And, unlike most upscale restaurants that bring in their desserts from an unnamed source, Steven's makes theirs from scratch every day. And yes, you can tell. Anyone who says otherwise is an idiot. My husband and I are very often a fan of this establishment. The food is pretty much the best you can get (quality and quantity) for the price anywhere in the area. The last couple times we've been have of course been great, but it seems it may be going downhill. Our server the last time especially was more interested in cleaning the wine bottles than actually serving. I understand that needs to be done, but that's what side work before and after is for. We had to ask repeatedly for items, and the salt and pepper shakers were half empty and not clean (!). The food is always on the salty side so I have to ask specifically for minimal seasoning. I'm ambivalent about writing this review. I do like Steven's overall...I want to like them; therefore, 3 stars, which is probably a bit gracious. They're close, they're family-owned, they're a steak place. But...but, but, but....do not get the Beef Wellington! I love Beef Wellington, really the reason we found this place and the reason we've gone here since then, several times a year. However, they don't appear to know how to prepare it....that is unless you think you think you're supposed to stuff raw beef into pastry. and I mean raw, raw, dark red, cold, disgusting, beef. Not sure what the problem is....Pete Miller's can do it right...places up in Wisconsin can do it. My husband could not eat his...which was a bit worse than mine even....and this was after we actually waited like 40 minutes for it....so strange, really. We took most of it home and had to cook it the next day another 30 minutes to get it right. :( Not good, not safe, not called for, especially for their prices, which are a bit high for the area and for the specific location of the restaurant. Stevens is a great dining experience if you want to up your game some but not over the top. It has wonderful food at reasonable prices but you feel like you are dining in a five start restaurant. The ambience is friendly yet sophisticated and the wait staff, excellent. The menu provides for a lot of variety with fish dishes, pasta dishes and meats. We dine here regularly, and I love the LIndsey's Salmon, and the Whiskey Ribs. We dine out every Satruday evening and this is definitely on our rotation of places to eat. I eat at Steven's at least twice a month and for the past 5+ years that I have been going there I have never had a bad meal. Meat was overdone once and the meal was comped. The friendly and helpful staff ensure that you have a great dining experience. I really enjoyed dining here for my husband's birthday/Valentine's celebration. You can truly relax here and can anticipate professional and excellent wait and busboy service. I ordered the shrimp de jonghe and broccoli side, which were perfectly delicious and expertly prepared. My husband enjoyed his pork chop and asparagus and would order it again. So I'm writing this review before I even eat dinner. That's how wonderful this place is. They don't know what a bad meal is. Tonight we're sitting at the bar and the three of us had made up our minds that we're going to order three different entrees and share them because everything is so wonderful and tempting. We always start off with some delicious handcrafted cocktails that are spot-on. To be honest, we are City dwellers and we love our favorite spots in Chicago. Just tried them for a second time last weekend with my wife, we both agreed the steak just isn't great. For the price why not go to Wildfire and pay less somehow. I did stay away from the Steak this time and had the fish which was ok but still not worth the price and service is just ok which I am big on. This classy restaurant is located in a run down shopping center which is such an odd place. I will say the service was fantastic!!!! The waitress was very attentive and helpful. The food was good. This is one of the worst restaurants I have ever been to. we went there for New Year's Eve. 1st - they said we. Didn't have a reservation even though we called two weeks ago for a time. Been here a bunch of times w my wife. Great chops, steaks and chicken. The crab cakes are a nice appetizer. Dark and romantic. Best steak and chops on the area. Great service. Many Gurnee-ites do not know about this place as it is tucked back in a sleepy strip mall on the NE corner of Washington and Milwaukee. But, it is the best Steak and Chops place within a 15 mile radius, oh and their seafood is not bad at all too. It is not like Del Frisco's or Ruths' Chris or Don Shula's, but it is just a smidgeon just behind those. If you are in the area and looking for a steak or chop, please drive out of the Outback or Lone Star parking lot and get yourself on down to Stevens. Look, good Mall based chain steak houses are great for areas that do not have good locally owned steak joints, but if you have a locally owned gem like Stevens, then pleaseeeeee drive on by the Mall based chains and come on down and get a great steak. read more

This is a great little neighborhood steakhouse. The prices are more than reasonable and the service at the bar is excellent. One night I had the fillet mignon crusted with blue cheese and it was perfectly cooked medium rare and it had just the right amount of blue cheese to complement the flavor of the meat. Their wine list is adequate though I would like to see it grow a little bit especially in the Cabernet Sauvignon section. So far the patrons that I have met at the bar I've been very friendly and talkative and they had a half decent band playing the second night I was there. That night I opted for the scallop appetizer which were wrapped in bacon but the bartender I ordered from thought I was ordering the scallop appetizer off of the regular menu, so I got the regular scallops with the corn sauce. I did not send it back because at first I did not realize the mistake but when I did I asked the lead bartender if the scallops were supposed come with bacon, he explained what the confusion was and ordered me a second appetizer for free. Nice Ambiance, decent drinks. Went on Tuesday night, it was slow and so was the service. Couldn't quite figure that out. We both ordered the wedge salad. For $7.00 each very lame, small portions and the lettuce was wilted. My wife ordered the red snapper and said it was real good. I ordered the fish special- Halibut. For $30.00 it was a small piece and was way overcooked. The sides of it was like jerky. Small inside portion was edible. Very disappointing. Tried to get the waitress' attention several times and finally gave up. Also You get 1 side for the $30.00, Got the Au gratin potatoes and they were good. Overall not a Very good dining experience. Have had much better for way less $$$. Probably won't be back soon. Too many other excellent places to go! read more

Outstanding steakhouse in the Waukegan IL area. I had the filet and it was cooked perfectly. I have to mention the steak fries. I have, since my first review, been back to this restaurant and I will tell you that it's probably the best restaurant in Gurnee. The service is fantastic, the food is amazing and the atmosphere of the staff is warmhearted. I truly enjoy how much they invest in their food and their customer service. I love the crab avocado salad, the tomahawk pork chop and the amazing tenderloins you can have with several different toppings. But the beef Wellington is top notch. I gave the restaurant 1 star because I can't give anything less than that. Otherwise I would give this restaurant ZERO stars. The ambiance is good at the restaurant and the food was descent, however the manager was EXTREMELY RUDE to me and racist. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND going to another steak restaurant in the Gurnee area, such as Backyard Steakpit. Same type of menu and ambiance except the manager isn't a jerk! I was given the wrong desert and didn't realize it until I got to work. My company went there for our department lunch and dropped over $300 to this establishment. After I realized I was given the wrong desert and no one in the office would take it because they were watching their weight I decided to take it back as it was the waiter who got it incorrect. Mind you the desert was about $15 and I didn't want to just throw out $15. When I came to the restaurant I was greeted by a very nice hostess who listened to issue and was sympathetic. She motioned for the manager to come and he looked me up and down and said I don't know. I don't know who you are. He in so many words called me trash and stated loudly "We don't take food back!" I didn't ask he to try and resale this cake I got a few hours earlier, but get the one I asked for. He had NO customer service whatsoever and his staff was completely stunned by his conduct. They were speechless to be exact, but he was loud and rude to me until he saw other customers coming in the restaurant then he lowered his tone and changed his demeanor. He is a psycho and I won't ever go there again even if his restaurant was the last place to eat on earth. I would rather eat bugs, bark, flowers, etc. than support his establishment. read more

We just happened upon this place while attending our grandson's graduation from Naval Basic Training. Living in the San Francisco Bay Area and Las Vegas, we are no stranger to great steaks. We have dined many times at Ruth's Chris Steakhouse and Mortons. We weren't hoping for a lot here. Stevens sits in an unassuming strip mall, looking, from the outside like any other strip mall restaurant. Not so! We both ordered the special of the day - 14 oz New York steak and blackened shrimp. Rarely do we order a New York steak as they are not as tender or juicy as the rib eye. Not this one. It was, by far, the best tasting steak we've had, bar none. Our server, Teri was absolutely excellent. We were so impressed, we took our grandson and the rest of the family there for "graduation" dinner. The blackened shrimp were not on the menu, but they made them for us as an appetizer. I can't say enough good things. The ambience and feel of the place makes you feel at home. read more

A really nice experience that I would recommend for anyone in the area. The food was very good and actually priced quite reasonably for the quantity and quality. The service was excellent at every turn (we had a young guy named Jake as our waiter), and everyone we dealt w/ was very helpful and friendly. The crab bisque soup was incredible (a heart-attack in a bowl I'm sure) as were the seared tuna and the crab avocado appetizers. Dinners were both steaks (all done perfectly) and fish and everyone really enjoyed the meals. The wine selection was more than adequate and the deserts were excellent. Living in the downtown Chicago market we can be pretty snobby about food and service, but I wouldn't hesitate to go back and will do so when in the area. read more
