Luckily my first time here was for a birthday party. The ambiance was excellent. I really enjoyed the live music and dancing. Also, the staff was great, and the server we had was excellent. So, why only 3 stars....price, seasoning, steak texture. The items on the menu were overpriced for the area. I would expect to pay what we paid at a restaurant a little closer to Chicago. One of the appetizers that we ordered was the lamb chops. My husband and I are huge fans of lamb chops. Neither one of us had more than one. Others in our party ( 20 people) described them as, blah. I ordered my sirloin medium, it arrived more on the medium well side. I made the best of it. I'm not the biggest fan of overcooked meat. To me it becomes chewy and looses it's natural flavor. I had to request A-1 steak sauce for help. Now, what did I like. A big party meant there was plenty of food to sample. The following are all an A+ in my book, crab & avocado salad, calamari, mussels in white wine and garlic sauce, mashed sweet potato's, roast beef sandwich, and the shrimp pasta (the shrimp were HUGE). This is our local go-to place for a nice meal in a friendly atmosphere. The food is good and plentiful. Staff knows the regulars and greetsthem warmly. Bar side separated from dining side. Some nice quieter corners for groups or conversations. Also event space. Live music some nights. They still have a secure coat room, too!!! We make reservations (sometimes a month in advance), but that is just our habit. There are inevitably mistakes here and there, but if we TELL THEM they immediately make it right, without a fuss. Very popular on Friday nights for Navy graduates and their families. Also packed bar on Friday happy hours. If you are a local person, you are bound to run into someone you know! Huge free parking right in front. Prices are moderate and up, I'd say. Most of the space is accessible. Some doors are heavy and unassisted. Lighting at night is low to medium, indoors. Parking lot is moderately lit. PS. If they say a menu item has garlic, they mean it!! Generous use of fresh garlic in the spinach, potatoes, etc. read more

Had dinner last night. They were able to accommodate 8 of us at 5:45p on a Friday. When we arrived, we were seated immediately. Dining room is lovely, and the noise level such that we could talk and hear each other from one end of the table to the other. Our server, Dan, was very knowledgeable and attentive. We had drinks, appetizers, entrees and then desserts. Delicious from start to finish...and service excellent. Entrees ranged from $18-45, wine averaged $10/glass. Two birthdays at our table and they were served free desserts. Big bar adjacent to dining room, but lively action there did not spill over into the dining room. And Stevens did not automatically add a 20% tip because of the size of our group. We gave Dan a generous tip because he exceeded our expectations...excellent job! My wife and I were staying at a hotel near this restaurant, found the listing for it on Yelp, enjoyed a lovely meal. The menu selection had something for every taste, the cocktails were great, and the food was delicious. On the advice of the waiter, when I asked him what people seemed to like between two choices I was pondering, I ordered the lamb chops. They were great. Had reservations on a Saturday night. Were seating shortly past our reservation time, probably about 5 minutes. Server (Cheryl) was very nice. We had the Crab, Avocado, Mango Tower...neither of us a fan, pretty bland & nothing special about it. We also shared the Crab Brie soup, which we both enjoyed, enough to bring another serving home. Agree that it needs the pepper for a more flavorful bite though. My husband had the Whiskey Ribs & Roasted Vegetables. He loved the ribs & said he hasn't had any that good since we were at Sticky Fingers in South Carolina. I no longer eat meat but I remember Sticky Fingers and they were amazing, so that is a major compliment. The Roasted Veggies were tasty. Cheryl suggested the Red Snapper for me & so happy she did. We shared a crab Brie soup. It's tasty. I suggest getting the fresh ground pepper. I think 5 dots of chili oil would make it even better. But I like strong flavors and Brie is a mild cheese, so that's just personal preference. He had a special - wasabi Sirloin. A sirloin with wasabi vinaigrette, roasted vegetables and Cajun mashed. The steak was ok. They sliced it which was odd. The vinaigrette wasn't vinegary? It was more of a wasabi cream. The potatoes and vegetables were exactly as expected. I ordered the filet medallions with varied toppings. Horseradish crust, blue cheese and cherry bourbon reduction. I added the potato gratin. The horseradish looks like uni but boy oh boy. It'll clear your sinuses and make you tear up. The blue cheese was as expected. The cherry reduction was good. It comes in a ramekin which I appreciated. I bet that sauce would be excellent with the pork chop. The gratin was tasty. Cheesy. We each tasted everything the other had and shared our remarks so it's two commenters per item. read more

Review of the experience, not the food. I've been eating at this restaurant for many years and love the food but I've never been treated as rudely as I was on the phone tonight. If you aren't going to do takeout during a global pandemic after 5:00 pm on a Saturday then put it on your website with the location & hours so customers don't sit on the phone for 5 min waiting for someone to rudely say "no take out on Saturdays after 5" and then hang up. Not even a thank you for calling. And for the record, we ordered takeout from the restaurant once a week in 2020 when you weren't allowed to have indoor dining so we could support the restaurant. I don't care how busy you are on the weekends, be polite to customers when they call or you will lose them, no matter how good your food is. read more

Terrific service - almost like we had an invisible busser watching the table and as soon as a dish or drink had been finished, they appeared to whisk away the plate or glass and replace it with something fresh. The food was delicious and reasonably priced. I ordered the pot roast which was enough for two meals with loads of meat, potatoes, and other veggies - for only $15. I paid that much at the airport the other day for a sandwich and chips! Dad had the pasta bolognese. He doesn't have much of an appetite these days but ate every bite of this huge dish. HIGHLY recommend! My son had just graduated Navy Boot Camp and we were extremely proud parents. We wanted to take him somewhere nice and we picked the right place. Not only was the food top notch but it doesn't end there. Our waiter was top notch as well! They also gave us 20% off because of his graduation and brought him an awesome HUGE piece of chocolate cake. I don't know when I'll get back there but Stevens has made a customer out of me for life any time I travel through the area. Dimly lit, with warm, inviting, more masculine than feminine decor, Steven's reminded us of older traditional Chicagoland steak houses, and in that tradition the hostess and wait staff were neatly groomed and attired in simple black uniforms, complete with black aprons. Though they were warm and welcoming, they conducted themselves in a professional manner. We ordered Beef Wellington, which consisted of a butter tender 8 oz. fillet mignon topped with finely chopped mushrooms and shallots which was encased in puff pastry, under which there was a creamy and flavorful mushroom, or "Duxelle Sauce" ($30). Our Beef Wellingtons were delicious. Though both were very nicely browned, there were roughly two inch portions in each that were not thoroughly baked through. Mushy and slightly slimy; it was an off-putting disappointment to what would have been otherwise perfect entrees. I just want to start out by saying I usually only write reviews when I've either had a great experience or a bad one.My last review here was after 3 weeks of attitude and finally when my 8 coworkers told me they had the same experience. There was definitely a reason I am the duchess here! The food here has always been really good. The bread is amazing, which is good for my friends dietary restrictions. Now the reason for my change from one to 4 stars ... Despite a gentleman walking up to me and handing me a 5 dollar bill "just in case my service was bad".... Is because the service was not bad at all this time. After being convinced to go back to Stevens the same waitress was extremely attentive and respectful. Granted after being handed a $5 bill I'd be surprised if I will be returning. Despite this man's actions and how offended I am I thought I should mention the increase in the service level. Also, I forgot to mention the very nice waiter we have had a couple times there. I wish I had gotten his name. I feel bad for folks living in Gurnee; there just aren't that many places to go for a nice dinner that isn't a chain. I also feel bad for Gurnee-ians as this isn't really that great of a steak house. The place is of course in a strip mall, is seemingly large and the decor feels overwrought, slightly cheap, and dusty. Dimly lit and loud. The place was packed. Large group, in-laws, a Saturday night. Our poor server seemed so anxious and nervous and sweaty and I'm not sure why. We were missing things here and there throughout, a fork, a plate, water, ya know, that kind of stuff. The bread my brother-in-law raved about was just so-so. The Steven's Salad I split with my sweetheart was small and eh. It came on a warm plate which I thought everyone knew was a no-no. My filet was cooked correctly enough; it hadn't been seasoned, just wasn't very flavorful or all that tender. My au gratins were lukewarm, undercooked and under-flavored. My love was disappointed in his steak as well. It just seemed everything was lacking flavor or quality. My mother-in-law who, it turns out, hates steak houses was just miserable but that's not the restaurant's fault. This place definitely has city pricing. It's too bad it didn't have any city quality to it. It's passable. There are much better places to go in the 'burbs at the same price point. I guess I'm just a steak house snob. read more

We had been moving into a new home most of the day, we had a 70 pound dog with us and it was too hot to be in the car, and we were starving for good food. The hostess advised us that the outside patio was not staffed, but we could order at the bar and bring our food outside. I went to the bar, explained the situation and placed our order with Christine. She and other staffers wound up serving us outside on the patio. She brough everything out including a pitcher of water for us and our dog. We started off with a tomato, onion and blue cheese salad. I highly recommend this salad. My husband ordered the filet with mashed sweet potatoes and I ordered the chicken piccata. We would order both dishes again. Went in on a friday night without a reservation. The wait time wasn't too bad at around 40 minutes. The waiting area however was very cold. If there's a winter draft coming from a window, turn a heater on or something. The appetizers came out very fast, and were good. The scallops stood out among what we ordered. The entrees also game out at a good speed. I had the chef special,which was bone-in filet mignon on a bed of lobster risotto. It was okay, but nothing memorable, and for how much it costs to eat here I was expecting better. Maybe I would have had better luck with the wellington. My wife and I visited for the first time in early January after hearing nothing but outstanding reviews from others . On our first visit, we arrived just before 5 and sat in the newly renovated bar booths that our Waiter told us about. We tried the appetizer pick 3 trio and chose the Caprese, Lamb Chops and the Fried Calamari. I was not a fan of the pita bread with the Caprese (only food complaint) but to each his own. For Dinner, my wife and I split the Cowboy Ribeye (Med-Rare) and added on a few Scallops. The Steak was cooked to perfection and the scallops were seared in a flawless manner. Too say the least, the food was exceptional. The atmosphere was pleasant and although we sat at the bar, the noise level was tolerable. On our second visit, we were planning our food attack as it was our anniversary!!! We once again went with the trio appetizer combo and loved it. For dinner, I went with the Tenderloin Trio Medallions (rare) and my wife the Salmon. Both were exceptional and the baked potato she enjoyed as her side choice was talked about for days. We were treated to a delicious offering of Creme Brûlée as a token of their appreciation for coming in on our 6 year Anniversary. It was a great evening... Now for the not so great minuscule parts........1. My martini was not to my liking and I had to walk to the bar to get it fixed as our server was inattentive at first but she made up for it at the end. and 2. The Salt and Pepper shakers were half-empty on the table (pet peeve of mine). Those two reasons were why I did not give the Restaurant 5 stars but they wouldn't let me offer a 4.5 rating!!! We stumbled upon Steven's after attending a wedding in the area (the reception meal was pasta and my husband and I are both gluten-free). We arrived at around 9:30pm, which is late for most fine dining restaurants, but the kitchen was open until 11. My husband and I both chose the Tomahawk Pork Chop for our entree (from happy pigs), on recommendation from our waiter, Dan, who was exceptional. It turned out to be a thick-cut, bone-in pork chop, and the best I'd ever eaten. I had grilled mushrooms and onions for my side. My husband and I also shared a shrimp cocktail appetizer - 4 jumbo shrimp in a spicy cocktail sauce. Overall, an excellent experience. One caveat: as we neared the end of our meal, we were the only table in the dining room. Can't speak to how the service would be during a peak rush time. read more

Every meal has been thoughtfully prepared, expedited promptly and served to us with a smile. At large catered events the appetizers both hot and cold are creative in presentation and flavors. Fantastic! We made resevations for 745 on Friday (2/20/16) and arrived early. We got there by 720. So we sat at the bar and ordered a bottle of wine. The male bartender was very polite and knowledgeable. They called us to our table right on time. Brian was our server. He was very polite and id request him again. We had the garlic and wine mussels to start. So yummy. We also shared a bowl of the brie and crab soup. I wanted to lick the bowl but i try not to do that in public lol. My fiance and i love to try new things so we share a lot. He ordered the dry aged Tbone (22oz!!) and i got the pistachio perch. I cant tell you which i likes more. The steak was super juicy and the buerre blanc sauce for the fish was amazing!! We also added scollops and those might have been my favorite part. The sides were nothing to rave about but thats not a complaint. They complimented the food nicely. I do like that the mushrooms and onions for the steak are portabellas not just cheap white mushrooms. The portions are very large. So although the prices might seem more expensive, they are worth it. I definitely left with a togo box. We didnt order dessert because we were going to the movies after and i wanted room for popcorn. I'm giving Steven's 3 stars for the service, food and overall ambiance of the restaurant. I googled top places to eat in Gurnee and Steven's came up as one of them. My friend and I made reservations for a Monday evening. My friend and I were somewhat surprised to find the location of this steak house at a strip mall. If it were not for google maps, I would not have found this place. They need to promote some sort of advertising near the road. The sign on the building is small and the bright neon underneath it is unreadable and tacky. Because it was a Monday night, the restaurant was not busy. When we arrived, there was no hostess to greet us (I'm hoping they have one for the rest of the week). We were then greeted by a server who signaled someone who looked like the manager to seat us. He answered our request of booth seating and lead us to our seats. He explained the specials and informed us that our server would be with us shortly. My guest and I picked up the menu that had traces of greasy fingerprints on it. If you want guests to focus on the quality listed items of your menu, then make it presentable. It costs less in the long run to protect them with covers then to make copies of card paper. Shortly after we were greeted by our server who did not seem enthused to be there. We were waiting for him to explain the specials or to present suggestions (we would have taken them). I asked what type of special drinks the restaurant offered. Our server just pointed to the drink menu and said "they're in there". I apologize if I come across as too critical, but for the benefit of the restaurant be excited about your product. Make suggestions, people will listen to them! We ordered the crab avocado tower because we were told that it was fresh crab meat and a favorite (after we asked him). The presentation was nice, but the crab tasted like it was lump out of a can. The mango salsa was delicious. I loved the mango salsa so much that I ordered the blackened chicken as my entree which was accompanied with the same salsa. The chicken was juicy and cooked appropriately, but it was under seasoned. Blackened should have somewhat of a kick to it, and this one did not. My guest ordered the four cheese pasta ravioli. She said it was the best pasta dish she had ever eaten. After having a taste of the ravioli, I would definitely recommend it to anyone. The sauce was rich and very tasteful. The ambiance was appropriate for the establishment. I will say that it was a distraction to hear the two different types of songs competing over each other.. Nice jazz music was playing in the dining area while patrons were listening to today's hits in the bar. We also could have done without the extra dirty plates that piled on the table during the course of our meal. After I took care of the bill we were on our way out. No one was there to see our way out but a bowl of random candy??? I would give this restaurant another chance, but would not list it as primary recommendation. I am a fan of privately owned restaurants, unfortunately Gurnee does not have many of them. We had reservations for a different restaurant across the border in Wisconsin to celebrate my parent's wedding anniversary, however when we arrived and saw a packed house with no one wearing masks, we decided to leave. Grateful that we found an available 8pm reservation at Steven's, and even more grateful for the warm welcome and fantastic atmosphere. The hostess made sure we felt comfortable at our table and the overall service we received all night was wonderful. Lots of attention to the details that matter. Shame on me for even comparing Ruth Chris', Sullivan's, or Morton's Steakhouse to Steven's. Steven's is very mediocre. My husband ordered a strip steak and I had the crab stuffed filet. Both entrees were less than stellar. Quality of the meat was far below other steakhouses. The best thing was the signature Crab and Brie soup. It was quite good-but very rich and filling. (Don't expect too much crab in it.) Good thing I had a Living Social voucher to take the sting out of paying these kinds of prices. read more
