We hired an another plumber and found out that when Alan built our restroom, he made the most basic, unforgivable plumbing mistakes that no professional should ever make. * Toilet Disaster: Alan jammed a 3-inch flange onto a 4-inch drain without securing it properly. This meant toilet water leaked underneath for years, creating a breeding ground for mold. * Shower Leak: He didn't even bother to use Teflon tape to seal the shower pipes, causing water to drip inside the walls, fueling even more mold growth. Because of Alan's shoddy work, our entire restroom was infested with mold, which then spread to our garage and living room. Worst of all, my son, who has been using that restroom daily, has been sick for over two years--all because of Alan's negligence. I am a construction attorney and know very well the problems that people can have during a residential remodeling project. Because I know what can, and often does, go wrong, we had delayed starting this major project for several years. After our experience with Watermark, however, we wished that we had done this project years earlier. We couldn't be happier with the final results, how quickly the work was done, the quality of the work, and the adherence to the budget. Our architect prepared some initial sketches and we met with Mike to discuss the project and to get preliminary pricing. Mike quickly returned the estimates and with enough detail to make important decisions about the scope of the project, and changes that needed to be made in order to fit within our budget. We went through this process several times until we finally settled on the final scope and price. When we began the project, my wife was about 7 months pregnant (and we have a 2 year old) and we were concerned about lead-based paint in our house, which was originally built in 1962. Mike did the lead tests, which revealed some lead paint in old cabinets, and gave us detailed information about the EPA's new lead-based paint guidelines. Ultimately, the cabinets were removed (intact) to avoid creating excessive amounts of lead dust. During demolition, our architect commented that it was an "extremely clean demo" and in about 3 or 4 days, everything had been removed down to the studs, including the old Saltillo tile, and ceramic tile in the bathrooms. During this process, we met several of Watermark's subcontractors including the framer, plumber, and electrician, all of whom were extremely competent, friendly, and focused on the task and getting it done right. I frequently found the plumbing, drywall, and painting subcontractors working on the house well past 6:00 pm and even on Sunday evenings, in order to maintain the schedule. Throughout the project, Mike was regularly on site and anticipating upcoming issues. He communicated with us about potential issues that may arise, the need to address certain issues while they were exposed and easily accessible, and kept us focused on making selections (tile, plumbing fixtures, light fixtures, paint colors, etc.) to avoid any delays. We were motivated to complete the project as soon as possible, because we wanted to move back into the house as soon after having our second child. All of the major work was completed 2 weeks before the completion date, and we moved back into the house exactly 1 week before the completion date in the contract! In addition to finishing ahead of schedule, Mike was able to complete the project on budget. With any remodeling project (especially older homes) there are a number of unknowns that will undoubtedly occur. We encountered our share of issues, but Mike always kept us informed of the issues, and discussed the costs ahead of time. Even with the unknowns and the unavoidable additions/changes that occur during any project, we were able to complete the project in line with the budget. [You should budget an extra 20% for any construction project. Ours was only 10%]. It is obvious that Mike cares about the quality of the work and wants his customers to be happy with the finished product. On almost every occasion, Mike had already identified issues that needed to be correct before I could bring them up. He expected his subcontractors to perform the work to the same level of quality that we expected, so we were always very satisfied, especially with the final result. To sum up: this was a somewhat demanding project because the house was fairly old and required a significant amount of work, I'm a construction lawyer who is hypersensitive to potential pitfalls, my wife was pregnant, and we both had high expectations for the finished product. Not only was Mike willing to take on this project, he completed it on time, on budget, and with fantastic results!

Updated details based on owner's response…read more Stay away.  We hired 1 Day Bath on March 2nd and they promised they would complete our kitchen renovation by May 1st (my wife was 30 weeks pregnant at the time). We made all payments in a prompt manner. We found out later they use fake positive reviews and stock photos on their website (and probably here too, see news article at the end).   At the project's beginning, work went quickly in clearing out the old kitchen.  Because of this, we also hired 1 Day  Bath to renovate our fireplace and do minor bathroom work.  They assured us the additional work would not interfere with the kitchen project (different work crews they said) and everything would still be completed by May 1st.  It turns out 'work crews' meant one person and we never had more than one worker show up on the same day. After kitchen demolition, the project moved along at a snail's pace.  Our project manager rarely showed up and did not communicate the progress of our project to us or others in the company.  One month in he left the company and no one replaced him thus leaving our project without a supervisor.  I would frequently text/call Don (owner) about the disappointment in the project progress.  He would make meaningless apologies/excuses.  The pace never picked up and he never once visited on site even when the project was left without any supervision. From March 15th to May 2nd, we had absolutely no kitchen and no working being done. It was a huge room of just concrete, with a big trench in the middle of the kitchen floor (not safe for anyone, let alone for a family with pets and a 35+ week pregnant woman).  Why would they remove our old kitchen if the new kitchen wasn't going to be installed for several months?  Our refrigerator was in the garage and we cooked on a portable stove.  We still didn't have a functional kitchen by the time our baby was delivered on May 17th.   From June to August a worker would show up sporadically for still unfinished items such as installing the backsplash, painting, cabinet handle fixtures, etc. In early August most of the work was finally 'complete' (three months past promised completion date). We requested the standard final walkthrough before final payment as agreed in the contract (per contract, 25% of the payment is pending on final walkthrough). On August 7th, a newly hired site supervisor came out and agreed that some work was not up to par and more work needed to be done.  However, he said he must collect the final check or they would sue us.  He wrote an email with a to-do list, promising to return within three weeks to finish/fix everything.  He wouldn't leave until he had the check. Concerned about our family safety, we reluctantly handed over the final check (yep I know, that was not smart and I should have called the police). The email stated (which Don was included on) the site supervisor promised to return within three weeks, which would be Saturday, Aug 28th.  On the 28th (talk about cutting it close) at 11:30 he called and said he needed to reschedule to Sunday "due to unforeseeable circumstances".  On Sunday he never showed and stopped responding to my text messages and calls.  At this point I naturally assumed our business together was done and when I wrote the initial review and started planning for small claims court. Weeks later Don texted having no idea about the timeline above and asked about 'fixing all the things that were installed wrong' (does no one communicate with each other in this company?). Any 'fix' to the flooring would be a band aid. It was not installed properly and needs to be completely redone (the estimates I received from professional flooring companies thought I installed it). This is something Don refuses to acknowledge. Don's response is simply not true on all accounts. At no point was anyone anything but polite to the workers. The allegations against my wife's parents (this is insulting) are completely false and there is no recording. The actual workers really liked us and we keep in touch for odd jobs. I have no issue with them, wasn't their fault. We received a 1% discount (wow, thanks!) for the items that were not completed on the contract. I guess for paying $91,000 I was expecting a lot more: such as staying on the promised time schedule due to a newborn coming home, not not having a kitchen for three months with not work being done, having a project manager, communication on project status/timeline, and high quality work.
